Car manufacturers bailing out of Oz...
charlie8575 replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree. Charlie Larkin -
If you use (or don't mind using) Virgin Mobile, Tom, Radio Shack is running a promotional on a "smart" phone for $29.99 that appears to be a pretty good deal. I never wanted one until trying to find my way to my friend's apartment in Brooklyn after LIARS- one wrong turn and oy vey! (Quite literally- I ended up going through the Hasidic neighborhood in Crown Heights). I'm seriously toying with biting the bullet on it and getting one. And I'll let Keith (my traveling companion) arrange getting it to work- he gets those things and I can barely turn on a computer. Charlie Larkin

You know what..I think I remember my drafting teacher showing us that in high school to contain the pencils. Not a bad idea. Charlie Larkin -
Paint Strippers - What to Use?

Can I fix this? Dust in the paint
charlie8575 replied to Quick GMC's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Bill and Donn have probably the two best approaches overall, I think. Niko's will work, again, if the dust is on the very surface. I've had many a black paint-job meet this same fate. Absolutely maddening. Charlie Larkin -
1991 Caprice 9C1 Interior Colours , etc.
charlie8575 replied to 1972coronet's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
When the '91s came out, Marlborough bought a whole fleet almost immediately. Then just as quickly got Crown Vics in 1992-93. Our cars were white with blue stripes and interiors. Testors Sea Blue in the 1/4 oz. bottles is a pretty good match. All carpet-delete cars got black vinyl mats. The hard plastic seats are pretty common around here, and are black. I don't know of any supplier for those or have a recommendation on how to make one other than sheet plastic and a lot of patience. I've never seen a police Caprice with a black interior. I've only seen blue and tan myself. The tan interiors didn't come until mid-model-year. Having had plenty of these cars over the years, I can't think of a good match for the light brown/tan/camel interior. I'd start with some of the Tamiya flats and go from there. I think there are a couple that get pretty close and can possibly be made closer with some tinting. I remember seeing cabs with gray vinyl trim, but that was about it. Possibly some unmarked cruisers, too. Charlie Larkin -
NICE job on the seat. This is going to look very nice when it's all finished up. Charlie Larkin

I like it, Ron. Your conversions are wonderful to watch come together. Charlie Larkin

1959 Chevy Impala----Just a tease! 4/9/16
charlie8575 replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Bill, First thing, my sincerest condolences on the loss of your father. Having plenty of friends that have lost at least one parent as we all enter our late 30s and 40s, while I don't personally know the loss, I know what it can do. Speaking for myself, if you need to talk or anything like that, all you have to do is ask. Second- those are cool magnifiers on your glasses. Where did you scare those up? I might get a pair myself. Third- this car is shaping up into something else, as all your builds do. The workmanship is astounding. Even if you haven't been building much, you haven't lost a step. Charlie Larkin -
Not sure about the grille, the rest of it is great, Rob. Charlie Larkin

If the complaints come in hard and loud enough. I'm sold- probably grab one of these 1Q14. Anyone have a spare Flathead from one of the '48 Fords? Charlie Larkin

I hope that's not true. If it is, talk about a loss for us all, and "made in China" inspires no confidence in me whatsoever. At $43,000, the new SS is quite expensive, and I'm wondering how well it'll sell (we're talking Chrysler 300-C territory, and solidly at the middle of both Cadillac and Lincoln's price structure). To me, that's like shoving a 4-cylinder engine in the Impala, like they're now doing with the 2014 redesign, and keeping the V6 only available for the LT and LTZ (middle and top-level) trim. I thought it was bad enough to put the name on a front-wheel-drive clone, but this is crazy. Side-note: having seen several of the Australian-built cars up close, I have nothing but good things to say about the workmanship- well-built, nicely-finished cars. Charlie Larkin -
Funny...I've actually been toying with building a Fotomat booth. Nice job on that, Tom. Charlie Larkin

I dread that masking, so I'm doing mine roof-only two-tone, and that little detail there would've made it a lot easier had Revell either molded it in or provided it as a separate piece. Tulio- GREAT job on this. I'm enjoying assembling mine and if it comes out even half as nice as yours, I'll be quite happy. Charlie Larkin

Makes me want to get mine built. Very nice, Terry. Charlie Larkin

Car manufacturers bailing out of Oz...
charlie8575 replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Considering that Australia mandates a very high minimum wage by industry in a e-Mail newsletter I used to get, and as a result, between that and their very strong currency, I can absolutely see production costs going into orbit. If I recall correctly, Australia's basic minimum wage worked out to around AUS$15-18/hour, which works out to about USD$20-25/hour. It was one of the reasons why a hamburger at a restaurant that would be equivalent to say, Applebee's or TGI Fridays was retailing for about $26 American. For those wondering if we should increase the minimum wage, I point to this as a cautionary tale. Sure, we'd like to see people make more money, but you need to rely on yourself to do that. Move up at your job, do it well and earn promotions, get some kind of specialized training or education, and some additional earnings should follow. An increase in the minimum wage will generally exert upward pressure on other professions, and if enough upward pressure is exerted, things like this can be the result. Charlie Larkin -

Fantastic, Al. This is one car I really wish either AMT would find (or simply make new molds) for, or that a caster would start doing. Charlie Larkin -
The convertible came with an all-vinyl notch-back bench standard, so the buckets are the better starting point. http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/colorAndTrim/1968/10.jpg Dan, this is going to be another beauty. I'm looking forward to the end result. Charlie Larkin

My mother had an Olds Intrigue with that. Sometimes it worked very well and did what you wanted. Other times, it worked too well and you'd either get into more trouble or couldn't get in trouble because you couldn't move, which creates a whole other set of problems. Charlie Larkin

Dad's Sable pretty well died a couple of months back. We're seriously considering the a Cherokee/Blazer-Jimmy/Explorer/Durango now. He's also looking at a Volvo V70- not all-wheel-drive, but still excellent in the winter. Charlie Larkin
