Darin- The work you are doing is simply stunning. I, too, love this car. I went to a buddy of mine's house once in the early 90's and he was showing me some of his kits stashed away in his closet. He told me I could pick one ( I already had close to 300 of my own at this time). Up on the top shelf was this kit. I had never seen it before and I also fell in love with the box art. Needless to say he wouldn't let me have it! Instead I picked out an old MPC 70 Firebird Trans Am kit. (nice box art too). Have you ever thought about building a replica of Larry Watson's 55 Chevy "Seaweed"? That's the one I'm planning for. Keep it up. I'm watching. Later-

Looks like you're off to a good start. What's in the plans? Later-

Nice quality work so far. Keep it up. A flower car would be a good companion build for this one. I hope I don't die BEFORE you finish it. LOL. Later-

Pics show the coil wire not on the coil so I fixed it. Should fire right up now. Later-

I started off tonight to work on the exhaust and instead I ended up wiring the engine. Oh well, it needed done anyway. Here is the start. The little dizzy with coil wire. Almost there. Getting them wires on the right fished back behind everything was a pain! And here it is finished. I got the wires on the left pushed down for a little sag and to clear a pipe that is to be put on in the future. This was the easiest wiring job I've done so far. All of the wires cooperated and went to their homes. I'm just glad that it is a 4 instead of 8 cylinder! Later-

If You Work with House of Kolor
Modlbldr replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Just checked it out online and the cheapest I could find it was $16.77 a quart or $49.-- a gallon plus shipping. I figure that a quart should last me a while and not set me back too far. I'll still look locally for it before I order online. Thanks again for the help. Later- -

Well now George... IIRC, There was a whole section in the JC Whitney catalog that catered simply to parts that served no purpose other than to "detail" a car back in the day and they made quite a killing selling those parts because almost everyone was "doing it". And why do we have "custom" cars if the modifications on them "actually serve no purpose" but look good in the eye of the builder? The reason? Because WE CAN and WE LIKE IT THAT WAY!! No other reasons needed. To each their own. And- Nicely said Harry and Luis. Later- -
Wow! That is clean and simple. Why can't I see this kind of beauty when I look at some of these oddball kits in bare plastic?? Later-

Nice job Bos. For your 5th it is a nicely done custom job. What's next? Later-

If You Work with House of Kolor

Doc- Thanks for the vid. I've been building for years but am just now getting into an airbrush and HOK paints. You responded to a question I had yesterday in another post about mixing brands of paint. This vid really answered some further questions I've had. Now I'm off to HOK website to see about getting some reducer. Is there a "plan B" for reducer that I may be able to find locally instead of shipping from Cali to save time? I imagine if I go to an auto paint supplier I should be able to find an equivalent to 311. What do you think? I'm excited to use all of my HOK paints that I got for cheap. Over the last year I've bought quite a few of the 1 oz. bottles from my LHS for $1.00/ea on clearance. Later- -
Well guys- Thanks for the advice. I'll probably just go ahead and finish this body with all Testors paint and save my HOK for another build. Or....I could put the kit back in the box for another 10 years and hope that it's fully cured by then. Later-

SS76- Great to hear. It's always nice to ave your own place to work. Take pictures along the way. It's just as fun as in progress shots of a model. I've been working on mine too as i get the funds and time. Put a reclaimed heater and insulation in mine last year and put a vinyl window in that I paid $10 for. Make all the difference. On topic- today I picked up the last five "Clearance" jars of HOK paint at my LHS for $1.00/ea. Marked down from $4.50/ea. Can't wait to get the airbrush fired up again. Later-

Rat's paint went up.

Hey DougP- I just went to that Hobby Town in Spokane that you're talking about today(I live in Chattaroy- 25 miles North) and picked up five jars of their "Clearance Priced" HOK paints for $1.00/ea. Marked down from $4.50/ea. They have their bottles of Polyscale paints (Railroad and Aircraft) for $1.99 on clearance. Not very nice colors unless you want to do some weathering or use it on an old 41 Chevy like me. Later- -
About 10 years ago (give or take) I primed and painted a 63 Galaxie with Testors Boyds enamel (Sunburst Yellow) and then packed it away. Today I bought a jar of HOK Acrylic Lacquer Kandy Lime Gold for $1.00 and I was just thinking about finishing the 63 by spraying a few coats of the HOK, and maybe a couple other colors over the top of the Testors. In your opinion, would this be fine or a no-no? I really don't want to strip the body, either before the HOK, or after due to some cross pollinating problems. Do you think there will be any problems with the different types of paint? Funny thing is, the body still has the 10 year old masking tape over the roof. It's been quite a while. Later-

David- Looking good and the photos are much better. Have you glued the bumper/grille in place or is it just sitting there for the pictures? If it's glued in you'll want to do it over because of your gaps in the fender/ headlight area. I, too, like the blacked out treatment. Goes well with the wheels. I'd love to offer some tips on what to watch out for with this build, but you're much farther along on yours than I am on mine. I still am doing the interior customizing and chassis work and body painting. Mine is a bit more custom than yours. And I've had it stashed away for a couple of years. LOL. If you're interested in seeing mine so far, here's a link to some of it. http://s486.photobucket.com/albums/rr225/Modlbldr/#!cpZZ2QQtppZZ20 Later-

Cruz- That thing is looking sweet. I really like the decals. Are they from the kit? What did you do or use to polish the body? I have one of the 85's the 69 and a 73. I'd like to find a 67 also. Then I'd have one from each year my siblings and I were born. I hope the rest goes smoothly. Later-

Brandon- I don't know.....Looks just fine to me. Nice clean work from what the photos show. Later-

Looking great. It's good to know about the fitment issue. I picked up one that had been partially started and brush painted at a thrift store a few years ago. That may be why it was there. I'd like to do a model of my uncle's 1:1 black truck. Keep it up and let the hints fly. I'm listening. Later-

What's holding up your painting ?
Modlbldr replied to Greg Myers's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
What's holding up my painting? The 40 degree rainy weather! My model room is an unsealed old metal and 4X4 shed that doesn't keep out the damp very well. May as well paint outside!!! Last year I put in a heater, a window and started insulating and sheeting the walls. I should have started on the roof to fix the ventilation problem. I plan to do some more work on it this year to remedy the problem. Back on topic: I use doubled over tape on old paint can lids or bottles, toothpicks stuck in cardboard, etc. Later- -
OK, I'll start. David- Your progress is looking good so far. I like the work that you've done on the fuel lines. I can't quite see where they go due to the blurry pix, but that engine, when built up, is so big that you definitely need some details like you've added. I also like the blacked out wheels. I never much liked these wheels but the black makes them much more sinister looking for this car. This is a great kit to build. I've got one in progress as a mild custom and I like the kit. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see it in the purple. Later-
-
OK Dan- My first criticism is that you are WAAAAYYYY too organized. How in the world do you plan to lose a few more parts, run around the model room throwing a fit because you can't find what you did with that stinking part!!! Oh, what? That's just me? Or, is it??? Really though. It's looking good so far and good to see that you have a plan to advance your abilities on this kit. I can't wait to see more. Later-

Ah, Thanks, but you'd only be disappointed.... Yeah, Maybe you're right. Later-
