International Cargostar
cargostar replied to mackattack's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Ironic? Thats a good word for it...... Here is a couple pics of my pumper. It is the narrow cab CO Loadstar Here it is loaded on the company rig, bringing it home. Here is one of my others. It is a '76 Cargostar B, (note the widened cab, and narrower fenders) ex CF yard tractor. The chrome goodies were saved off of some firetrucks. -

Like this?...... No I haven't finished them, or the mold. I discovered a fairly major error in the front wall of my master that requires fairly major surgery to correct. All of the ones shown have approx. 2 hours of repair to fix the screw up.... There were 3 distinct variations of this cab. The first, known as the CO-Loadstar is shown in my avatar pic. Its my '67 1800 Barton/American pumper. The next was the Cargostar A. Ih widened the cab approx 8", and narrowed the fenders accordingly. It retained the same grill as the CO Loadstar. The final version was the Cargostar B, which was the same cab and sheetmetal as the A, but IH added the large grill, and headlight trim. There were some minor variations over the years of the B, most notable the door handles changed from push button to slam lock, and the floor of the cab varied depending on engine size. -
The Big One

Looks good so far. Don't forget to re-inforce the frame joints, especially as big as that thing is. I've had splice joints fail, and its not pretty...... -
I posed the question to the LACFM, and got two responses. First, from a Joe who stated that yes, the boards on the Squad were made of treadplate. The second, from the President of the museum, stated that when the Squad became property of the museum, it did not have any boards on it, so, they had a local fab shop make a set based on some pictures. He also said they are not correct, and are planned on being replaced.
-
Heres one showing the mirror extension, and the front of the board. I also found pics of the back of a Squad, with a different license plate, and chrome rings aroung the tail lights, instead of painted!!
-
I kinda figured on tring to radius the inside corner of the flap, but, since the design of the board itself is in question, I'm holding off doing any more untill I decide on which are correct. In the pic that Steve posted, there is a non slip pattern plainly visable, and the front flap of the board connects to the board with an angle, not a radius. In comparing pictures, there is also a difference in the mirrors. On the sleeve for season 1 DVD, there was a "U" shaped brace or extension on the mirror heads. The Squad currently doesn't have them, and they are not shown in Steves pic.

Little bit of an update. First, Heres a pic of the running board, as requested. A debate has begun on how these were constructed. The Squad now has treadplate boards, that were fabbed by a contractor to the LACFM, when the Squad arrived at the museum. The original boards had apparently been removed and disposed of. So, I believe the original bords were a pressed type with lengthwise ribs, so, a new set will be built. Heres the back of the box. The first is a oops , as I had the tail lights located incorrectly. The second shows the correct location, and the rear bumper.

I have someone in mind for the decals, just when he has time to do them. I know this guy is quick and does quality work, and there isn't a border to blame when it takes 6 months for an order. The plan is to do some kind of package for both, but the WLF cab is getting a little "tweaking" of the details Heres the Ward LaFrance cab.
-
Heres an update. Got one running board done, and started on the side mirrors. I've glued them to my mock up cab with white glue to check the fit and placement. I've also got the holes drilled for the compartment handles.
-
Well, the plan is to cast it, along with the other Squad parts, so, I'd be shooting down a sale ! I figure it would sell good beside the Ward LaFrance (Engine 51) I already offer. Most of my dimensions are written on the box itself, so I'd have to draw it out first. Let me make sure that its right, and I'll put some drawings together. Thanks for the heads up on the paint, but I'm going to mix it in Dupont here at work...if this one gets past the master stage!
-
If you notice the first post, I left it to the mods to make that decision...
-
Steve, that helps alot!! But, why is it missing the running board?? and the lettering is different!!!(paramedic vs. rescue squad)

I'm not sure how close the STS body is to the former 10-8 body. I ended up with alot of the 10-8 molds and parts, and most of them were in really rough shape. Judging from the VIN of the original Squad, and various info on the net, the 10-8 body was too long as shown in the pics. I did find several minor errors on the Code 3 truck also, although they were mostly handles in the wrong spots.
-
I'm going to put this one here, but if it needs to be moved to another section, do it. With what seems to be a renewed interest in the Squad lately, I dug out the body from 10-8,and started looking at it. I realized that not only it wasn't square, or straight, but it was too long. So, after printing off a bunch of pictures, and taking my calipers to my Code 3 1/64th Squad, I came up with some dimensions that "look" right. And then out came the plastic..... Heres the Code 3 First side of the box. One of the distinctive things on the box, (at least to me) is the corner to corner stiffening bend in each door. I'm tring to replicate it on the doors also. Comparing the 10-8 box to the new box. Mocked up behind a Dodge cab.

American LeFrance Car Hauler
cargostar replied to Towmaster Dave's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Very cool conversion Just a thought, you might want to lengthen the dove-tail area, or lower the side height of the bed to reduce the deck height. Most vehicles that are worthy of being hauled on it would get hung up at the "break-over" point between the deck, and dove tail. -

I've thought about it. But, I have a hard enough time finising one truck, let alone the Super Pumper, the tender, and the satelite pumpers. The next may be something from Chicago. I'm leaning towards Big John, or one of the Willys deluge trucks. Or I started CFD 759, a Paystar wrecker years ago, I might dig it out. -

KFS is what I use. I'm guessing this is the old Hobbytown treadplate, but, I get it from Don Mills Models. I buy it 20 sheets at a time, because these big trucks sure eat it up! -

Heres the latest. This is the jumpseat area for behind the cab. It still needs some p/e slamlocks on the compartments, and a seat cushion , but this part is done!
