3D Printing....Instant Model update
Foxer replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The possibilities here are very interesting, to say the least. And Pat... it's not "pie in the sky" Jetsons stuff... the technology exists. Harry, We see that the Tech exists, to some degree, to some quality, but a home machine to print perfect Model Kits does not exist today. There does not exist today even a Million Dollar 3D Printer that is being used to produce specialty Model Kits. Welcome to TDR Innovations It's not a theory, it's here and it's being used in real-world applications right now, today. The only thing keeping it from the mass market is cost. Sure, real world applications, but nowhere near what the tech and machine would need to be for our purposes right now. Welcome to TDR Innovations It's just a matter of time before it gets to the price point where it can be sold as a mass-market product. Like everything that does not exist today but we would like for it to someday, it is a matter of time, that is something we can hope for. Let's fantasize for a second that tonight a $999 3D Printer becomes available online that will produce perfect Model Kits. Now let's also fantasize that all you have to do is "Set it and Forget it" just like Ron Popeil's Roasted Chicken Ovens. Welcome to TDR Innovations -
3D Printing....Instant Model update
Foxer replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
well, better to see what could be coming and enjoy this thread! Here's a few 3D cars available although they are not intended to be run through a 3D printer .. yet! This technology will never replace the mass quantities of plastic that can pushed through a injection molding machine .. but , like the current resin industry, it will support the RARE bodies we all crave! -
You might have to print a few times on plain paper to get the size right, but a 1/25 plate is .5" long. It would be pretty small on your screen, but it's easy with just the cost of a sheet of plain paper. You can scale the first try just as you would scaling a 1:1 part to 1/25 to get an idea on how much to change it.

3D Printing....Instant Model update

This is pretty standard for most all architects now, though the client would have to agree to the cost of actually creating that detailed a model. Many do create 3D models standard because they can be used to generate the 2D views used to make the building drawings needed most of all. It's been four years since I sold my Architectural-Engineering firm but we were doing this then .. and they are doing it MUCH more now. The biggest thing coming, and it was demonstrated 5 or 6 years ago, is to create the model of a proposed building and then "go into it" using goggles and some controller with the client. It would be liking in the actual building. You could change colors, flooring, wall paper and move walls or cut new windows while you're in there! Amazing! -
3D Printing....Instant Model update

I really doubt 3D printing will change the way Revell etc. operates much. Maybe they will use it some if it makes business sense in developing their plastic kits, like using it to "print" out a master to be translated into a steel mold. Also, FYI, the going price for quality 3D files made for rendering is about $100 right now .. about the price of resin. Here's a link to one site selling for many of the best artists the create 3D car files ... 3d02 It's worth a look just to see the vast amount of autos that have been done in 3D. The rendering quality is amazing and most now are probably beyond the detail that would be needed for a 3D printer. All the images were rendered in one of the rendering programs available. -

Here's an update just FYI ... I'm getting the photo now .. so weird! Only problem now is I have to figure what it is!

I know you're easy to find with a search, but why make potential customers work .. just put a link!

I haven't thought hardly at all about the interior during all this bodywork, so this morning it was time. I knew fitting things in with the fenders welded to the body would be tricky. Everything underneath had been cut back as much as possible to allow the interior to be placed. First was the glass. I cut the AMT glass leaving just the windshield and that fits good with the windshield frame from underneath. The AMT rear and side windows are to wide to fit now and just as well ... I'll cut some new glass to fit the rear and side windows. The Revell interior sides got 10" cut from the bottoms and fit well. The AMT bucket has plain side panels that don't look that good and the bucket won't go in anyway. The AMT '32 has a rear package shelf while the Revell has the seat right up against the rear of the body. I figured the AMT would look better in the AMT body so I cut the sides off the bucket and sanded until it fit between the Revell sides. That all worked very well and the Revell dash even fits! Eventually it will be a Tan leather color with maybe a little wood if that fits.

Good thing I still can't see anything. This is really odd

Bodacious Tatas coming our way?

Now, that's different .. Smart Tata's -
That sits nice .. the springs look fantastic!

It appears the major bodywork is done. I took a suggestion by Charlie8575 and put 3 vertical slats in the grill opening which will be body color. It was much easier than I thought, but with a lot of sanding and test fits. I like how it looks ... as if I planned it from the start! The license plate shroud got on today also and just needs a little putty to mold in. Just some .02" styrene. The back looks complete now with no big, flat expanses.

I get no photo. Just says "Posted Image". If I click that text I get a white square with a spinner going round and round. I'm on latest Firefox and win7.

3D Printing....Instant Model update
Foxer replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just to add a small bit to Bill's excellent and very interesting comments, I've been messing with 3D files since 1992 when 3D Studio came out. I became interested in acquiring 3D files of cars soon after. I have tried modeling some cars but it IS a steep learning curve and I never pursued it very far. I expect when 3D printing becomes common in price and quality you will still be buying "bodies" from 3D vendors as you now do resin bodies. The variety will be astounding compared to resin bodies now on the market. File sizes is a non-issue. As I said, I had 3D files on my DOS computer. For the printers they would a bit different as to type to include instructions the printer can understand and not much larger in size. I can't wait for this to come to be as I need a body of a 1972 Volvo 140 I had! -

The belly pan could definitely be a deal breaker but I'm glad to see you worked it out, Bernard. And, you know these things happen building a real one ... one thing that what makes your builds so interesting.
