A bit of note about car tires in the early years
dwc43 replied to Art Anderson's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That's pretty interesting there. I know this is kinda off topic to some degree, but there is one tire that I would like to know more about. The tires on the SR-71 Blackbird are not black like most plane tires. They cone in a grey color and have sintered iron metal filings throughout the tire to dissipate heat during high speed landings. Much like the filings found in metallic brake linings. Wonder what kind of rubber they are made out of in that grey color? If I am not mistaken, I think Good Year made those tires. I have a Revell 1:72 Bird sitting on the shelf, and it's a fav. plane of mine, so that is why I wondered about it. -
NOOOooooo. Not chevy rims on a Mopar, sacralidge. lol

I've always been this way. It's not getting any worse either, as far as I can tell. And it's not that tough at all. It's just shades and low lights conditions that hamper it. And sometimes certain colors might look a little off. But I can get through that. Now I can't see far away and have an astigmatism too. That's all correctable with a lens though. They do make a lens for color blind people and they are two different colored filtered lenses, but I am not bad enough to need anything like that. I think I'd rather loose my hearing. Even though I'd miss out on my fav. movies that way, I could still drive. Being that I drove a truck for year and raced cars almost all my life, driving seems to be pretty important to me.

Great. So I am not the only one that thought it looked out of place. I don't my 'vette's well enough to figure out what they changed and did not change on that car, but it was the only one that looked really out of place. One other thing that I did not like was the fake blower and catcher on the Pontiac. They could have at least mounted a motor inside to spin the blower pulley and open the butterflies with a cable or something when it was moving. At least try to make it look real.

Kenworth Tandem Torsion Bar Suspension
dwc43 replied to Porky's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Hey, don't forget my fav. Chrysler has been using torsion bars since the 50's right up til the present, except for a short span in FWD era and the only in some trucks in the present era. -
It might help some, but not really. The roofs are different between the Charger body and the 70 Road Runner body. It might be close though. There's not a lot roll cage in those cars back then compared with what they have today. There's any body parts that will swap between the two either. The nose is different and so is the wing shape between the two. I'd have to check, but I don't think the fender vents are even the same. Since I brought that up, most everyone things those vents are made to vent the air away from the fender wells. That is not so. During testing of the Daytona it made so much down force the tires were rubbing the fenders and blowing out or at least to the point of cording. So they cut holes in the fenders so they could continue testing. Running out of time, they just made the vent to cover the holes. Now that's engineering there. lol

PM me with you e mail address and I'll send you all the pics of the Superbird and engines and such that I have. They only ran the car for a year before NASCAR said no more wings. So you wont find much info on the car or pics at all. I've been lucky to collect some here and there and seen one of them so close that I could breath on it. I was in Petty's shop in '78 and placed my hands on a Magnum while they were prepping it for a race for the next weekend. Something you could never get away with today.

I loved that movie, but I always thought there was something wrong with the 'vette. It just did not sit right or something. IT always looked too high in the front like it was missing some front spoiler or something and looked like it squatted to much in the rear or something. I know it was modded here and there for the movie, but it just never looked quite right to me. Can't wait to see the builds on this. I thought about doing some of these builds from that movie too since you can get everyone of them except the police cars and the MS Mopar. If someone would resin cast the lead Mopar I'd attempt to build the whole set.I kinda feel like the shelf would be empty without having the lead car to go with the rest of the set. I'm surprised that no one made that car since it was used as an Indy pace car and set some speed records. After all they did the Olds aerotech.
-
Nice. Something different you don't see everyday. Like the Ford in that other pic too especially all dirtied up like that.

Thanks. And thanks for the tip. I'm going to make a post it note of that to hold on to till I need it again and give it a try. To be honest, it's testors aluminum #1181. And it looks pretty good on most stuff that I have tried it on, but I'm open to something that will look better and more realistic. I don't think I have mentioned it on here before, but I'm partial color blind. Supposed to be red/green, but I don't have any trouble with those at all. I have trouble with shades or dark colors in low light conditions. A real dark maroon and a dark brown will look almost the same in low light to me. But other everyday red, green, black, blue, white or what ever looks normal to me under any light. So on some of my paint, I have to rely on the guys at the LHS to lend a hand sometimes. My hobby town guys are like my next door neighbor when I need something they are right there. A good bunch to deal with and where I get most of my paint and stuff from. So if anything looks a little off in the paint dept. you know why and feel free to drop in a hint if you have one.

Here's a pic of the plain jane engine and the open chassis in the background that I kida patterned my build after. No polish at all. I painted my block and heads factory red though instead of Keith Black black like he did. lol
-
The 38 looks longer in the tail than the 36. Maybe they just confused them or figured no one would know.
-
I don't know, they look almost identical. You judge. First two are 36 Ply Coupes and the red one is a Chevy and the last one is a 38 Ply. Coupe. Just for reference, I looked at a 26 Dodge and it looks just like a model T except for the grill shell.
-
No, I'm going to leave it open. That's why I'm trying to detail as much as possible. I'm kinda loosely building it on some pics of a car that I found on the net. He had a caption under one pic that said something like. Polish never gained you one tenth of ET. And his engine was plain. No polished blowers or hat, or valve covers or anything like that. So that's why mine is all dull looking aluminum painted instead of chromed up like others build. That one was backyard garage built and so is mine. lol. Thanks. I just hope the injector lines work out. Some of this stuff I am doing I have never tried before, so I am pleased with it so far.
-
Thanks. Now on to the hard part that I have been dreading. I have to build the injector lines to the hat and bend them up and try to get them all straight. Think I'll cut four grooves under the hat and lay four very long bare wires in place and CA them in place then try to bend them and cut them to fit. Sounds like plan.
-
I finally got some parts in and made some progress. The aluminum pulleys are from Scale Repo. It uses pretty much a black rubber band for a belt, but it looks good and fits well too. Got the engine installed in the chassis, the oil lines run from the filters to the block, the fuel tank is installed and lines run to the fuel pump. Just need to install the barrel valve, lines and hat, and steering and wheels and I should be done with it. Hopefully by this weekend it will be finished for good.

Terry Labonte's #5
dwc43 replied to AceofBass's topic in WIP: Stock Cars (NASCAR, Super Stock, Late Model, etc.)
How about a very fine tip red ink pen? I've been using a black one to do grills and rims and such where you want it precise and in tight places. -
Just a close up vid of an original Bee minus the Cragar wheels. Good inside and outside shots.
-
Thanks. Not afraid of, just don't have an account right now ... lol
-
I remember those. I used to have one when I was kid. Looks good. Did a great job on it.
-
I found this great ref. vid last night by accident and thought I'd post it up for you guys to see. He does a good job of covering a lot of the cars details.
-
LOL. Let us know how that turns out will ya. Make sure not to over cook and burn the stuff on the bottom of the pan.

Congratulations to me
