  1. Back in the mid-80s when I was doing Exxon's racing program advertising, 650 hp was typical for NASCAR cars. As for $85,000, that will buy some used, hair-raising supercars.
  2. According to the email accompanying the article, it's intended to one-up the Camaro ZL1: "In response to the very well received and very quick Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Ford have today announced a revised version of the top-of-the-range Shelby Mustang GT500. Due to be released at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, the latest Shelby Mustang boasts a styling tweak and most importantly an enlarged version of the supercharged V8. Now displacing 5.8 litre, the all-aluminium engine thumps out a hugely impressive 650 bhp thanks to a TVS supercharger that according to Ford "creates 2.3 litre of displacement." According to Ford, the Shelby's new engine is the most powerful V8 currently available." As for the "daily driver" claim, it appears the article is a Ford press release.
  3. Ford is making a few tweaks to the Shelby GT500 that you may be interested in... http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/4997/Ford-Shelby-Mustang-GT500-Coupe.html
  4. Come on, it's easy, guys. I could hold it in a straight line as soon as I went into total paralysis. Finding the presence of mind to open the chute would be another matter.
  5. Their website doesn't describe much of anything. What are they selling? Do you have more details?
  6. For anyone who missed it, here's the On the Workbench thread, which should add even more to your appreciation. There's some discussion about the paint on page 3. (Amazingly, it started out as flat red Testors enamel from the small bottles.) http://www.modelcars...opic=48379&st=0
  7. I wish I could come up with a better word than "spectacular."

  9. Wow. A car with an exoskeleton and an inside skeleton. Very creative.
  10. This is pretty much identical to my first car. A mechanical PITA, and probably helped put my mechanic's kids through school, but I loved it more than any other car I've owned.
  11. That is what is so irritating about threads with blind titles in their posts and unexplained links.
  12. You'll find several in 1/16. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1%2F16+ford+model+T&_sacat=0&_sop=10&_odkw=1%2F16model+T&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
  13. That's my problem, and believe me, I know how this stuff is supposed to work. This site gives me NO "remember me" options of any kind on my browser, and that's why I'm stumped. Every other site shows me that, but this one doesn't. Here's what I get when I go to Scale Auto, which offers that selection. All I have to do is click on "Log In." Can't make it happen here. Could this be because I'm on Mac? Here's what I get every time I come to this site each day after opening up my computer, and I have to fill out the user ID and password every time, then click on "Sign In," even though I never signed out.
  14. No, when I open every other site I get a screen with all my information already entered in the fields, and I just need one click on the Sign In button.
  15. That's my problem. I use Firefox and, as I said, every other forum offers me the autofill option, but not this one. I never sign out but I do shut down. All my other autofill sites just require me to click on the autofill, already entered, when I come to them each day. This one requires me to enter the user ID and password every time, with no opportunity to set an autofill.
  16. I am a member of many forums, yet since this one has upgraded, I have no option for an autofill sign-in like every one of the others. This is the only forum where I have to sign in each time and have to re-enter everything. Is there a reason?
  17. This is truly an astonishing model. One of the elements that convinced me it was real were the screws in the chrome trim in the wheel wells. I think I would have said "real" even with all the other images you posted.
  18. There are so many subtle details that I never see from even the finest large-scale model builders that it's got to be real.
  19. We have two conjoining threads going here: Good kits vs. bad kits. Both threads give our colleagues an experienced, heads-up about what to expect from a variety of kits. I see no evidence of whining.
  20. The Jo-Han Gold Cup Classics were pretty good, though their later classics weren't boxed as Gold Cup. The 500K coupe and roadster are terrific, but the coupe has too many inaccurate parts, plus mounting holes for spotlights and mirrors that aren't accurate to the coupe, which were moved over from the roadster kit. And their later reissue of the 500K coupe is molded in an inaccurate bright red, with much more flash than the original Gold Cup version. The Monogram Classics are OK, though the 540K coupe is totally inaccurate with a separate hardtop that goes on top of the cabriolet body shell, and has vertical louvers on the sides of the hood, instead of the horizontal louvers of the original 1:1. That particular kit has no parallel in the 1:1 world.
  21. From my point of view, if a model shines like glass it will be a beautiful model but it won't be accurate to replicating a 1:1 car unless you're going for a showcar look. As mentioned above by Christian, there are different kinds of finishes for different eras of cars. In my estimation, the best shiny builds with gee-whiz finishes have been by Hawk312, who goes for showcar finishes. On the other hand, I think Cruz does it perfectly without going overboard. (I do not intend to imply by omission that anyone else lacks talent.)
  22. Totally agree with the Bentley and in my case, the 1/16 Mercedes SS for the wheels (though I haven't mastered the assembly yet. Figuring it out makes my brain hurt). These kits are extremely accurate and detailed, though they allow ample room for adding missing detail and improvement of molded-in details, and need help with door hinging. But that's part of the fun and the challenge.
  23. Anything that requires tremendous research and scratchbuilding to look halfway acceptable. My nominees for the worst kits ever produced by a supposedly major company (both of them originally Renwal) are: • 1/12 Revell Ferrari 275 GTB • Revell/Monogram 1/12 Mercedes Gullwing. Bringing myself to build and improve either one of them is beyond intimidating.
  24. I don't quite understand this. Can you please define what you mean by "fake" box art? The way I see it, any box that doesn't show a build of the actual kit and uses either a photo of the 1:1 or a painting is a fake, since it doesn't represent what's inside the box.
