Racist? How is anything I said racist? Is music racial, I really have to ask you if you believe that? I thought I was quite clear. The forum is about model cars. Not music, not girls, not health problems, not a place to ask for prayers for dead pets and apparently not about politics! If you Kevin feel that you are free to post a link to a video about your favorite band with a veiled attempt to make it about cars, then I feel the freedom to state my opinion that you are a hypocrite and prove that by posting my political opinion. If you were really interested in the car then you could have posted a “screen cap†or done a little searching on Google looking for the car instead of posting your stupid music videos making the rest of us be subject to offensive stuff. Just to help you figure what it is. Same = Same. -
Working (not posable) Steering
Jairus replied to torinobradley's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Bill, I have to admit that I still work on ideas for roll down windows. THAT is visual and can be seen by the viewer.... along with a folding top for the convertible. Things visible are very important because this hobby is all about visible! A correct firing order on an obscure French racing car is just NOT something that the average viewer will understand. The thing I want to build is a remote control that opens the doors and rolls down the windows with-out touching the car! Now that would be something.... -

Okay, the fun has gone on long enough. Kevin, I guess you are too dense to get it so I will have to spell it out for you. Gregg posted this when he closed the “Rants and Raves†thread: The assumption was that all modelers wanted a clean forum about nothing but model cars. I semi agree with this. (Would like a section for Freeblogging with friends… but as Gregg stated, it’s his sandbox) Personally, I find videos that which you posted Kevin, quite offensive! Your discussion about borderline bands and offensive lyrics does not fit the criteria of threads suppose to be about “just modelsâ€! Even vailed attempts to suggest a neat car in the background…?? Oh, give me a break!!! I like this forum and have continued to provide information, How-To’s and post creative comments to other threads regarding our common hobby. But I will not stand by while hypocritical comments are posted on threads, political statements are written in signature blocks and offensive avatars utilized without stating my opinion. I guess denseness is more than skin deep…. "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke) My name is Jairus Watson and I support this message. Edit: P.S. I would like to give a big THANK YOU to everyone of you who copied/quoted my original message... -
Frankly, I would change out the 4 door and convert it to a 2 door with a neat set of minilite wheels! Nice project.
-
Nice family picture there V! Beautiful work as always.... now, the question on all of our minds is: "what is your next project?"

Working (not posable) Steering
Jairus replied to torinobradley's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Why? Really, I have to ask.... why? Yes, I did working steering both with a box and a rack (not finished incidentally) and the results were that I spent more of my time making the stupid thing WORK than I did making the rest of the car LOOK correct. Ultimately it comes down to what do YOU want out of of this model? Do you want working steering? Then build it for YOU. Do you want to set viewers on their collective ears? Then build a knock-down drag-out super painted and detailed model car that they can see, but not have to touch to make work. Working steering is not something that the average viewer will EVER be able to play with. Maybe a few judges and a one or two friends... but the rest will have to take your word for it that it really works. Kind of like filling the scale fuel tank with real gasoline..... a little silly! Frankly, I feel working features are a dead end and better time could be spent making the weathering, paint and detailing more realistic rather than making working features in a scale that is just too small for such clearances and realism. -
I think this one applies for us modelers....

This one is mine.... But thanks anyway Bill! All new tool and probably pretty expensive! -
Almost no racing car has an radiator fan. Such things are stripped as they are parasitic horsepower losses since a racing car rarely spends any time sitting at a stop light. However, just try driving any street car through down town Chicago without a fan and you will be overheating in minutes. When you build your Ferrari model just consider if it is to be a racer or a street car and build accordingly. If you are shooting pictures or are viewing pictures of racing cars then that explains why you are seeing no cooling fans.
-
Duh! All street cars need a cooling fan! However, by 1970... most Ferrari's had converted to "Electric fans" mounted in front of the radiator. Therefore, the kit maker might not have shown it due to the fan being mounted in a place where the cost of molding it being prohibitive.

All the Mustangs from 1965 and up listed every part as optional. By 1972 you could easily purchase a base stock coupe with Mach 1 stripes, grille and deluxe interior if the buyer wanted to pay for them. However, I have to warn you... that that base frontend utilized a CHROME bumper with a chrome surround in 1971 - '72!

Don Imus: Obama an 'Empty Suit and a Phony' By: Phil Brennan Nationally syndicated talk radio host Don Imus says he will back John McCain for president because Barack Obama is “an empty suit and a phony." Imus, appearing on Monday's Fox News broadcast of "Your World with Neil Cavuto," said, "I have personal experience at that. When I made my remarks about the Rutgers basketball team, which was mean-spirited and directed at people who did not deserve to be made fun of — and was not funny — I apologized for that. I didn't offer any lame excuses, [but] he refused to place into context either my life … or any of the work that I had done in my life," Imus said. "As I pointed out to Al Sharpton, I slept in the house here at the ranch with more black children who are not related to me than either one of them [the Obamas] ever have. And then when this psychopath Rev. Wright shoots his mouth off, and I wasn't serious, [but] he was serious making outrageous reprehensible remarks." Imus continued, “The first thing Senator Obama asked all of us to do was to place this clown’s life in perspective and to consider the context. That's nonsense. I don't detest Senator Obama at all, I just think he’s disingenuous and a phony.†Imus poked fun at the current Democratic National convention asking, “Why do the Democrats invite every loser — Dukakis and Gore and John Kerry and Clinton — hanging around to remind everybody that here is another guy who couldn't get it done. I don't get that. It just reminds us that it’s been one disastrous campaign after another.†As for McCain, Imus said he thinks the Arizona senator “has the potential to be a president in the tradition of Teddy Roosevelt, and I love the guy.†© 2008 Newsmax. -
I would do it the other way around: Spray flat black and then shoot gold, silver, gray or whatever through a piece of nylon fabric.

Where Does Pelosi Think Natural Gas Comes From? This week, The Foundry is reporting live from Denver on all the sights, sounds and flavors of the Democratic National Convention. And one of the first “sights†for those arriving by airplane is a video on the catastrophic dangers of global warming. warming. You don’t really have much of a choice of whether to watch: The video blares as you wait for the tram to take you to the main terminal. At the main terminal, you’re greeted by the face of Gov. Bill Ritter (D) on a banner extolling the virtues of Colorado’s “New Energy Economy.†As much as Ritter and other environmentalists may hate natural gas, it’s big business in Colorado. In 2006, over $7 billion worth was produced from more than 20,000 wells. The governor may not like the fact that his state remains a big producer of “old†energy like natural gas, but at least he knows where it comes from. Defending the fact that she is presiding over energy legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives while investing $50,000 in billionaire T. Boone Pickens’ energy scheme, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday said on “Meet the Press“: I’m, I’m, I’m investing in something I believe in. I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels. … These investments in wind, in solar and biofuels and focus on natural gas, these are the real alternatives. Natural gas is a “cheap alternative to fossil fuels According to the “Energy Kids Page“ of the Energy Information Administration (EIA), here’s how natural gas is created: Millions of years ago, the remains of plants and animals decayed and built up in thick layers. This decayed matter from plants and animals is called organic material — it was once alive. Over time, the mud and soil changed to rock, covered the organic material and trapped it beneath the rock. Pressure and heat changed some of this organic material into coal, some into oil (petroleum), and some into natural gas — tiny bubbles of odorless gas. In other words, contra Nancy, natural gas is every bit the fossil fuel that oil is. And just like oil, it has to be extracted from the ground — often from “pristine†areas that wealthy San Franciscans don’t like to see touched by drills. The U.S. currently is a net importer of natural gas. Not only is there 18.7 billion barrels of oil in the Outer Continental Shelf that Pelosi wants to keep off limits, there is also more than 77 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that we could be producing domestically. Throughout convention week, liberal interest groups will present policy discussions in a “Big Tent†outside Pepsi Center. One such panel is called “Faces from the Front: Western Perspectives on the Drilling Boom†and promises to address “the toll that this administration’s ‘drill everywhere’ policies are having on the people and communities of the West.†We’ll be sure to ask the panelists what they think about Nancy Pelosi’s coming out in favor of domestic production of one “alternative†— natural gas.

Kevin, I am not mad! Heck I feel the ability to have a section of this forum to discuss any subject with other modelers is necessary. Unfortunately, there are some on this forum who feel that this should not be the case and bugged Gregg about it. When Gregg set up this forum he said to me that "This forum is for the modelers and moderation should be at a very minimum. ANY SUBJECT is par for the course as long as discourse is kept polite." That of course changed some time ago.... My feelings (which have never been hidden) are that we already have a common thread of friendship in our hobby and should also be free to discuss any subject including Religion, Politics and latest ###### pulled by Paris Hilton! Unfortunately there are a few shallow minds here who want to put the "blinders" on and only talk about painting and gluing together plastic toy cars so that their delicate sensibilities will not be bruised.... or whatever! Since I am not allowed the freedom of subject... I will continue to point out where others have "stepped over the line"! Nothing personal.
-
Are we now trying to insert politics, religion and ANY FREAKING THING besides model cars into this forum now?.... hmmmmm?

Gotta get my wisdom teeth removed.

And this has WHAT to do with models? I thought ALL you guys wanted to talk about was models... yet it seems other subjects bring out a lot of responses..... -
You know Verg.... I never liked the later "Road Warrior" movies or "Death Race" due to the need for vast doses of suspension of disbelief... However, your build, if taken in small doses looks great and you have provided a lot of neat ideas in this thread for my other projects! I think I will be coming back from time to time. Although I doubt that I will ever build one of these road-tanks... the ideas are useful for Rat-Rods and other weathered projects. Thanks!

The Cars of "American Graffiti"

Buy the Movie on DVD and take screen shots from your computer.... best source possible for accurate details! -
Fenders are not the same either. The International fender in the later pic has a crease down the middle and a higher peak. The B&W pic shows a more subtle curve to the peak. I suspect that it is a GMC... but I am usually wrong. As for finding a suitable resin or plastic cab.... why worry about the make? I can remember most businesses and service industries using all sorts of makes and models so as long as you get the right era... the rest is just scratch-building.

Drawn from what? I start out my Photoshopped drawings from a line drawing like this: The line drawing is first sketched out on a white piece of paper in pencil and then inked with a RAPIDOGRAPH technical drawing pen. Which end up looking like this: Not to put you on the spot, as your art is beautiful... but I am just wondering how you start out?

This is my Mach 1 which I owned for about 5 years. Sold it when the cost of gas went over 2 bucks a gallon and doubled my investment as well. Sure was fun to drive though.... Note: the close tight fit of the rear bumper, the chrome trim separating the black from the body color (only on cars that did not have the Hockey Stick striping) and the duel scoop "Ram Air" hood which was a standard feature on all Mach 1's. Incidentally, this car had a 351 Cleveland with a 4 bbl carb, 4 main bearing block and 4 speed. It also came equipped with air, deluxe interior and all the bells and whistles except the stripe, electric windows, Ram Air and rear window defogger. Trivia, 1971, 72 and 73 were the only years where the tranny HAD to be in reverse to get the key out of the ignition... J
