  1. Where you get that strange urge that you want to build something of a different category that you normally don't build? I have found myself sticking to the 1/24 and 1/25 cars and some rally stuff, but lately I have really been getting the itch to build a formula 1 car. I've never built one, but have three in my stash from tamiya, two ferraris and a mclaren. The more I gawk at what my favorite eBay seller has, the more I want to purchase to build as a collection. Trying to restrain myself here! Has anybody here had these weird itches to try another category car outside of your comfort zone? If so, what was the subject?

  3. hey guys, i'm being commissioned to build an Isuzu 117 model for a buddy and will need to ship it once i get it done. what's the best way to ship a completed model with the least amount of damage?

  5. my most painful/bleeding was when i was (for some stupid reason) trying to separate a frame from the chassis bottom of a lindberg 61 impala. i was growing impatient and the #11 blade slipped from the model and cut my left index finger to the bone. i have minimal feeling to the left finger, but instead of going to the hospital i washed it immediately and did the hydrogen peroxide treatment then superglued it shut. i still have the scar from that. The other incident involved me accidentally dropping the modelling knife.. it fell about 3 inches and stabbed me in my gut. i'm a fat guy so when i pulled it out, gravy came pouring out! nah.. no gravy, just a dabble of blood. as far as the hobby knife rolling off the bench, i've learned to immediately push back and away from the desk and separate my legs so there's a 1% chance i may get stabbed by it.

  7. i've had good luck with ebay. i always check the reputation and feedback of sellers prior to bidding - but i also read the entire listing so i understand the shipping process too. as far as me being a buyer: i always make prompt payments (literally, within a minute), so to make the seller's job a little easier.
  8. Were you looking at building some kits as part of the lowrider CBP? My favorite line of cars has to be the Impala, from 58 - 67, and i have a lot of them and different variations from the hard tops to convertibles, etc. My favorite has to be the 64 SS. I recently picked up the 64 impala lowrider magazine version with the blue hip-line decals that are really really nice.
  9. so the paint you used: was it airbrushed or rattle can? i really like this build - my only suggestion is maybe go a little lighter or further away from the paint, and use a dehydrator to cure it. using lighter coats works great, and build it up in layers. once you're confident enough with the thickness of the paint you can wet sand LIGHTLY from those wet sanding/buffing pads to get rid of any bumpy parts of the paint. If you are using an airbrush, i might even suggest an enamel clear before you start the wet sanding process, or you can airbrush on some Future floor wax and wait for them to cure in the dehydrator. once you're done with the 12,000 grit, i'd then use something like Novus 2 polish and buff it out. with enough time and care, you can get a really really amazing paint finish. PLEASE don't take that as a harsh criticism, as i believe you really did do a good job with it. I'm just offering up advice on what you can do to take it to the next level
  10. if you're in to the tuner type vehicles, i'd stick with Tamiya. I've tried multiple Aoshima kits, and have never had any luck with fitment on them without a serious amount of time invested into body work - and even then, sometimes, i'm not successful. try a Tamiya kit and you'll never look back

  12. here's an OOB revell corvette C6-R with the exception of carbon decals, and it was painted white primer and regular yellow Tamiya spray.   13. I was building this with what might consider "modern technology" with some carbon fiber and black trim in some spots vs chrome. brown leather interior, tan carpet and photo etch window cranks. The paint is a Metalizer's Aluminum Plate that is NOT polished, then it's topped with Boyd's Orange Pearl and then i attempted to do stoplight red metallic flames on the front fenders. I then used future to clear coat it and then novus polish after wetsanding to 12k grit. The paint is VERY smooth as you can see reflections in some of the pics. I know it's not perfect, but i certainly did the best i could. The hardest part about this was there were no instructions to work with, so i was left guessing for the most part.   14. speaking of chrome... the biggest IRK i have with models has to do with how model manufacturers will attach chrome pieces to a parts tree. 99% of the time you have no choice but to cut the part off the chrome tree and it removes the chrome from that one spot, which in turn will stick out like a sore thumb if left alone. it'd be nice if they attach them to the sprue in more hidden areas. so i guess another thing i like to do with models, esecially regarding chrome, is stripping it completely and using alclad chrome - it looks more realistic (scale) than kit chrome IMO.

  16. i know that based on being in contests and judging contests, paint is definitely something that draws attention to a model. if the paint gets my attention, then i'll look more inclined to want to look at it in detail (if i'm not judging). Getting a great paint job can take some time and experience, so if that's executed correctly, then i'm sure the detail on the rest of it would have similar quality. Now if i'm judging i will consider all things: fit, finish, execution, and basics (glue marks, injector pin molds, etc). sometimes it can be hard to narrow down the results, so starting with the basics is first, then paint, then execution/craftsmanship etc
  17. i like doing all the detail stuff, and i don't like taking shortcuts, but my one favorite thing to do is paint.

  20. i agree to an extent, John. i do like nice simple kits as much as anybody else. however, every once in a blue moon, i will want to see, for curiosity's sake, the level of detail a manufacturer will take a model to, and how well they can execute it. i also wonder if there's a noticeable difference between an EMS Fujimi kit and a cheaper, less detailed kit when both are completed by the same person with the same skill level. Then it's a matter of choosing which one you like more in the end. Every builder has their preferences. Some like simple, some don't. I don't mind building complicated over-engineered kits out of the box, but i also like adding my own touch to my models in the fabrication department, which is where the cheaper less detailed kits come in to play. I'm just hoping somebody has a complete list of these kits or if anybody knows if there were more than the 37 listed.
  21. i'm gonna be starting this one back up here pretty soon. i was looking up some Enthusiast kit pics on google and it came up with a pic of my engine! So anyways, i was going through my stash trying to separate my new kits from started kits, and went to open the box and i was surprised to see i got as far as i did. The chassis was already done by myself previously! So i think once i get done with a couple other kits, i'll get this one off my bench next. (of course i SAY that, but what REALLY happens may be a different story lol) i was already test fitting the chassis to the interior and the hood won't sit flush against the car when closed - maybe a general design flaw with the kit or i'm doing something wrong. but it will be fixed one way or another. stay tuned!

  25. it's a nice kit, and the only suggestion i can think of is sanding off all of the trademark stuff on the bottom. and man there's a LOT of stuff to sand off this car! It's still nice, otherwise.
