Panel scribers.
Erik Smith replied to modelercarl's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have a difficult time keeping lines straight as well. I found that I was applying too much pressure to the scriber - I reduced the pressure and now just do it in very light scratches numerous times and, while still not perfect, the scribed lines look better. Also, with light scribing, masking tape is less likely to pull up or move as it is just there to guide and not really hold the tool in place. -
Let me know if you decide to go the Duke route - I might be able to get a decal for the roof made.

Love the subject matter of the Doyusha kits - the actual kits can be pretty rough, though. Bluebird looks good so far and it's always nice to see something different.

You have put a lot of work into this build already. It's looking better and better. I think it's cool to ask for suggestions, but ultimately it's your build, so go with what you like best.

Always loved the '64 GTO - built one about 25 years ago, I think I was in junior high at the time. I have another (red) kit too. I'll be following along. Let's hope the Polar Lights vs Monogram debate stays out of the picture (don't think of an elephant). Thanks for starting the post Mike.

I like this build - excellent work.

NIce, nice, nice. This is a great kit - has a few issues (specifically getting the grill/bumper to sit right in the fenders) - but I can see you overcame them. I have one in the final stretch, although it doesn't follow any drag roots. I'll post the pics when it's completed. Thanks for posting!

Not to mention massive destruction of Amazon rainforest already taking place to grow soy. I think it will be a combination of technologies or something we haven't explored yet that will be our replacement for "straight" gas vehicles. The subject of hydrogen has come up a few times here - what the heck happened to all he hydrogen hype? Maybe we are getting acclimated to higher gas prices?

eBay is a weird world. I just bought a lindberg Crown Vic, unpainted version, $9.99 with free shipping. Not sure how somebody is making money on that. Then there are increasingly more and more annoying sellers who think their junk is valuable and don't mind relisting an item for months or longer. Now, onto Hawaii. I have been to Kauai once - loved it. What I didn't love was all the million dollar houses lining the beach with NOBODY present. Who has enough money to have a multi-million house for a vacation stop? Sad thing too - ebay was built on the backs of millions of small sellers without making scratch. I just wish more was available for a larger part of the population. Beautiful, though. Loved the weather - 81 high, 72 low everyday.

Batteries I use at work have improved ten fold in the last 20 years. Ni-Cad batteries are about 1/2 the weight of older batteries and last longer on a charge. So batteries are getting better. New cars, as mentioned, weigh considerably more than older cars of similar size - that hurts mpg and distance on a single charge. Also, I still don't think there is a huge market for all electric - thus less incentive for further improvement.

You can order them directly from Galaxie Limited. Sorry, no link - I am on my phone. -
Red Plastic Is Made By The Devil
Erik Smith replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Orange was crafted by Satan as well. I have an orange '64 T-Bolt with 1 coat of sealer, 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint (white roof, green body) - no bleed. One light coat of clear, still good. Wet coat of clear - bam, ORANGE! I have heard a layer of Future will block out the dreaded colored plastic. Or, use paints that are not so hot - Tamiya and Testor lacquers are not as hot as automotive (e.g. Duplicolor, which I used). I coped - painted white roof black. I am so glad Revell has left that sad episode (molding in colors) back in the 90s and now molds in white. -
Nice and clean! Looks great Mike.

question about dupicolor color match
Erik Smith replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The gray primer sealer will etch - I have found it is "hotter" than the sandable primer. It (sealer) isn't really necessary with duplicolor primers. -
Looks really cool John - tons of nice little details and excellent craftsmanship. The brake line would be correct - goes through the backing plate to the wheel cylinder. Thanks for all the posts!

Ho hum! Just another Japanese mini car painted like an old fighter plane and heavily weathered and modified to look like some insane person drives it like a maniac around the countryside. Wink nod. Very cool!

Wow. That is really nice. I like all angles of this build, but the engine really got my attention. Superb job - I am looking in my phone and will have to pull it up on my Mac at home to get a better view. Thanks for posting!

Best kit to build 1964 GTO?
Erik Smith replied to allegheny's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The monogram 1/24 kit is nice - although pretty typical for the era, simplified but separate suspension, etc. It is readily available and cheap too. -
Who here buys collections?
Erik Smith replied to TurboKitty's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd go with eBay or emodelcars. Buying a collection usually means severely discounted pricing - nobody is going to give you close to retail for an entire lot of kits. So, unless you are just trying to get rid of models, sell them individually or in small groups. Offer combined shipping discounts. You can continue to try Craigslist too but, as you have noted, there are a lot of jerks buying (and selling) and you will get no shows. For CL customers, YOU make the terms. YOU tell them when to come look. Otherwise you'll be waiting around for the 50% or more of the people who have no intention of showing up. -
Not only more than one day's work, but definitely do it before you die - It's very difficult to do anything after. Some very cool old models. Let us see them renewed!

Tamiya's New Primer is out
Erik Smith replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been milking a can of white for months. I'll have to head out this weekend and try to aqcuire some "new" stuff. -
Cool. I work in wildland fire suppression and I have the opportunity to work with a number of sky cranes. They have a belly tank with a snorkel to pull water in and doors to let it go. I worked a fire in Yellowstone one year about 1 mile north of Yellowstone lake. I had two sky cranes and a bell 212 with a bucket and could hardly keep up with them as they can fill the tanks and return so fast.

The Funny Quote Thread
Erik Smith replied to RickRollerLT1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
"I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go to the other room and read a book" Groucho Marx I find this entertaining and true - just ask my wife and kids. -
Look at this video
Erik Smith replied to gray07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What part of "look at this video" describes anything about the content of the video? Please, slow down and just add a little description such as "look at this video...of a 1957 Chevy falling apart".
