What makes a pro modeler a pro ?
W-409 replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually the seller himself was a welder, and he had done the "Pro Built Chassis" himself. ...But back to the subject. -
This turned out very nice, as always! I like how the body sits on that chassis and you did fine job with painting and detailing this one. Where are those decals from?

What makes a pro modeler a pro ?

I have been thinking the same thing many times. Some of those Models really might be excellent and "Pro Built", but then some "pro built" models can be....Well, something else. A same kind of thing I read in Finnish American Car Magazine. A guy bought '40s Dodge Pickup from The HAMB and because it was lowered a lot, he asked that how the chassis is done. Answer was just that it's "Pro Built". When the car arrived in Finland, there were no springs in the chassis and everything except the wheels and engine were welded on place! Man, that's something I wouldn't call very Pro Built... -
Nice combo Dave! Nice builds, both of them and great idea of using another Volkswagen as the Car Hauler. Especially I like the Karmann Ghia, I've always thought that it is very nice car and great body style, you did great job on the build also.

That turned out great! I really like the paint job on it and the overall look works just fine. I just wonder if that Hudson Six would be powerful enough to spin those tires. Just kidding, great job.

Alright just a couple of pictures, I saw part of the body away to get Hilborns fit properly and it's starting to look like an engine now. All I need is to scratchbuild Leaf Springs to front, since after searching for more than one hour I came up with nothing. I know I have them somewhere, but I'll probably find them after I have scratchbuilt my own.

Then I moved to the Interior again. The Seat and Door Panels were painted by Humbroll's Radome Tan paint and then I Foiled the Door Panels... Somehow there came those black marks on the other panel, and I couldn't get them off. Well since I have already put the interior together, I can tell you that luckily they can't be seen well after it's all together. Then I painted the Dashboard. I used Black and White, as the Instructions show. Here I still need to paint some of the details and use BMF for the rest of them...

Metal Axle Madness!
W-409 replied to mrknowetall's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That '60 Dodge Phoenix caught my attention. Is it the Jo-Han Promo? You used the chassis that came with it, I guess? I bought one of those too while back. MPC '50 Mercury Snap Kit. I think I have no more, I've built 62 Models and that is the only one I can say surely that it has Metal Axles. Can't remember any other Metal Axle builds... -
66 Chevy Pro Mod Drag truck (6-16-13) More chassis work
W-409 replied to Prostreet's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Cool build, I'm sure this will be a lot of fun to watch! Nice body too, that is absolutely something I'd like to have too after seeing Fast Freddy a couple of times in person doing those huge burnouts! Here's their website for more pics...I'm not sure if there are any chassis shots, but... http://www.fastfreddy.nu/ And I said he does long burnouts. Yes, and then he comes back to the starting line very fast, a few years ago someone was looking with a speed camera and Freddy was reversing over 200 km/h (124 MPH). Here's a video of mine. Not mine, but.. -
Oh and almost forgot this one....

Before moving on to another Ladder Bar, I had to start building the engine and to see if I have to modify something to get it fit right. A friend suggested me to use 409 Chevy on this one and, well, I couldn't say no. This is just perfect place for one Chevy W-Block. It spent one day in paint removing liquids and then it was almost like new. I scratchbuilt the Engine Mounts from Styrene and then I test fitted the engine on its place. It fits perfectly, only thing I have to do is saw a little part of the body away (In front of the Windshield opening) to get the Hilborn Fuel Injection Stacks fit. I made the Fuel Lines from each injector stack to center of the Manifold where is that collector part. I will run a single fuel line from there later. If I can saw the body today, I might have a couple of more pictures today, but in case I don't, here you go....

We are moving on to the Chassis! Kit's Rear Axle had Molded In brake line on it. I removed it and after I had painted the Axle, I made new one from Metal Wire. I don't have a picture of that, though, but it's there. The whole chassis had only minor problems with the Front Axle installation, and I had to drill some holes bigger and do some other small things. Overall everything fit nicely together, and especially the Frame to floor pan was very easy to do. Also the wheels and tires fitted perfectly, no glue was needed and they went straight immediately. I had to test fit the Body too.... Two More.

1/16 Scale Army Vega Funny Car - Finished 10/14/2018
W-409 replied to Mooneyzs's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Looking Great! All the extra work you did with the seat shows, it looks just like something you could find from these Funny Cars. And I know exactly how it feels to do the sanding process, just like my '55 Chrysler Stock Car's body in NASCARS section....Huh. Anyway very nice work, I can't wait to see more of this. -
Great looking old Gasser that was forgotten in the barn for a couple of decades! Good job on the weathering and nice work otherwise too. The engine is a beauty.

Model car box top art MEGATHREAD
W-409 replied to Stef's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually I have no clue either about the Henry J. Maybe someone else knows this better... I thought that there's something like that with the Dragsters, since I didn't see any. I think we all need to thank you for doing this project! -

Here are some kits I found that are not on the list. Or then I didn't see them, that's possible too. But anyway, I'll delete those pics when you get those you don't have moved into your Photobucket. There are some AirFix kits that you have as MPC versions, too. http://public.fotki.com/NostalgicDrag/model-box-tops/ And will Dragster kits qualify? Or then European cars that are in Gasser etc form? -
Thanks Joe, Darryl, Carl and Chris! I appreciate your kind comments. Especially Joe's cool and unique builds inspire me to try something else than Stockers. I took a Dana 60 Rear Axle from my parts box and started to make Ladder Bars from sheet Aluminium. Now I have another one completed, and next one will be done tomorrow. Then I can start test fitting this thing really and see if I have to change anything to get the rear end sitting where I want to. Front Axle needs to be built too, of course. A little adjustments with the Ladder Bar is needed before it passes the inspection, but..... Thanks For Lookin' In.

31 Nash: way beyond "Rat Fiink" Coupe: new project 5/9/13
W-409 replied to John Teresi's topic in WIP: Model Cars
WHAT?!... You....Handpainted.....The Pinstriping......On the Belt..... Let me pick my jaw from the floor.... T....... That looks Fantastic! That..... Oh well maybe it's just easier to post this one: -
Thanks Ray and yes, when that was being built, I thought already then that the frame should be a little longer. Now I can do whatever I want on mine ! I enlarged the Rear Wheel Openings using my Dremel. It really looks much better like this, thanks for the guy who suggested me this thing on Vintage Drag Models Forum. New stance is a bit higher too than it was before, that looks much better too. Now I will move on to the suspension parts, in front and rear. Those Rear Wheel Openings still need some work to get them round, now they are just roughly opened to see that the stance works like this.

Heh, thanks Frank! Solder is really good material, because it's so easy to bend to shape. I built the pipe from Carburetor to Pro Charger. I built it from two pieces of Styrene Tubing, because I didn't have anymore solder. Still some adjustments will be done before paint to make it fit a little better.

Thanks Darryl! Here is a picture of the Shifter installed and then I wired the Line Lock button. Still need to scratchbuild the Line Lock to the Firewall, but that's coming later. Also I installed the Center Console on its place again.

Since you have some kits that are same kit in different box, will AirFix Pontiac Funny Car qualify? You have MPC version of that kit, and AirFix is the same but with different box. If you'd like to add this one, let me know and I'll take a better picture of the box art. I have never seen another one in the Internet. -
Great subject! I really like the engine too, Nothing beats W-Blocks! I like what you did with paint job and Foiling. Both look very good to me and nice interior work also. Looks like you got the opening doors fitted nicely, that is a common problem in my builds, if a kit has opening doors. Great work overall. Now when there are no bigger mistakes, you could add more details to the engine bay on your next one... ;) Really nice.

Well I finally have an update for my Torino Talladega. Engine is painted Metallic Blue and Cylinder Heads, Valve Covers, Intake and Oil Pan are from the kit. Oil pan got some Moroso logos on it, and then I scratchbuilt the Pro Charger. Belt pulleys are from the kit and still needs to add the Belt. Bracket for the ProCharger is made from Styrene. Some touchups with paint are still needed.
