From a wifes point a view
DRG replied to Nick Notarangelo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My wife, of 37 years, has never complained about my hobby. She thinks it is great and at least I'm home with her. She goes to the different shows I manage to attend and is as amazed as I am at the caliber of the builds. -
I love this forum as it allows me to see what tools you guys are using, your workbench set-up and what you are working on. For some reason I can only post attachments but here it is anyway.

Picture isn't real good but it will improve over time I hope. 1965 Pontiac 1932 five Window.

Yesterday I posted something that was for the most part misunderstood. 1- I have a lot of respect for the members of this forum and attempt to always show them the respect they are due. 2- I used the word skills when I should have used the word talents. Skills can be learned, can talents be cultivated?? 3- In refernce to the money issue I was referring to collecting 500 or more models to build. I limit myself to a stash of three or four as that's all I can afford at any given time. 4- Those that use after market parts, God love ya, but I can not afford those things so I don't worry about them. 5- I was strictly trying to point out that there are builders out there that are not at your level and more than likely never will be. Whether that is by choice or some other limitations really has no bearing on anything. They love building Model Cars and will continue to do so. 6- Some of the guys have workbenches to die for. They have all the tools and gadjets needed. My workbench is simple and I posted a few pictures to illustrate. I respect everyone here and I understand there are different opinions, I was strictly voiceing mine.

A man has got to know his limitations

I want to thank everyone that responded to this posting. In all honesty it was posted out of frustration. But I fear there was a misunderstanding, perhpas caused by my choice of words. I believe that skills can be learned as most of you indicated. However I am not so sure that raw talent can be cultivated. I will continue to build models as I can and perhaps I will improve over time. Also I was not knocking anyone, other than perhaps myself. I have all the respect in the world for the talents of alot of the builders on this forum. -
As I look over the pages of this great forum I realize something very quickly. I will never be able to build models like Rommel, just to name one. I do not have the skills, the time nor the money. That does not mean I won't build. I just won't build as many and they won't be tricked out with after market parts or scratch built parts. There are many people just like me that build models. We do what our skill level permits and our finances will pay for. That does NOT mean we are inferior builders or lazy or any other things that have been implied in some posts. I appreciate all the help and tips and techniques that are offered by many and over time I will try them all, I'm sure. But elaborate work benches and a stash of 500 or more models is not going to happen. I can not afford it.

I have never been a big fan of those low profile tires and I am strictly a Keystone or crager mags man. But I have to admit you pulled it off on this one. A great looking model, well done.

Since I joined this great forum I have noticed there are many great builders out there. But I honestly believe you and Rommel got a whole lot more talent than most. Fantastic build. -
I really don't understand the problem people have with using their full name. In all honesty unless you shred everything, have a locked mail box, give out zero information about yourself and purchase nothing by credit card or through the internet, you stand a small chance of idenity theft. Personally I'm not concerned about it, my name is clearly listed on my business cards, my phone number is available to whoever wnats it. People know where I work, what time I leave for work, what time I get home and which of my cars I'm driving. The powers of this forum want my real name; No problem; Donald R. Gardner.

Can't be much help on the bench but to store those bottles of paint try a spice rack.

Since I don't like the exhaust system that came with the 62 Catalina 421 SD kit I bought some solder at Radio Shack. I'll make my own. Also went for a ride and to my surprise found a Hobby Lobby I didn't know was there.

I know there have been several items written on using solder for exhaust systems but I can't find them for some reason. What kind of solder do I want????

Welcome aboard. Your correct this is a great forum, I know I spend my time here rather than building.
-
No, that's what you would wind up with. I would wind up with a five window coupe disaster. I like it, looks good.

If you look under the workbench section and go to page three you will find workbench Saturday nights. Lots of pictures.

Welcome aboard. Like you I haven't built anything in a few years, ( 35 or more ) and have just gotten back inot modeling. This is a great forum with a lot of really great builders. The beauty is they are willing to help those of us that are talent challenged. By the way, a good friend of mine lives on Walney Island -
Now that's what I'm talking about.
-
Now there's a Hot Rod. Back in 1962 when they knew how to design and build real cars.
-
Another masterful build.

You are a true craftsman, the paint job is WOW!
-
Great job on building this model. I really like those two paint stands.

I worked at an AMC dealer in the early seventies and personally I like several of their cars. They had one, memory failing me, Hurst something or another that I really liked.
-
I am suppossed to be working on a 1961 Pontiac 421 SD but I am sitting here on this stupid computer, again.
