Parts comparison needed, please.......
1972coronet replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Remember, too, that the quarter windows are different from the '71 / '72 - the '73 / '74 quarter windows are the "same" as the '71-'74 Road Runner ( Satellite, et alia ). Seems like a fairly monumental undertaking to update the AMT '71 to 1973/74 cosmetics. I have a beat-up '72 Rallye Charger ( MPC annual ) which I was thinking of bashing with the AMT '71. My plan is to splice the doors' "dents" from the '72 into the doors of the '71 . I haven't actually compared proportions ( i.e., will it be a simple grafting or more involved ). -
56 Ford F100 Original Revell
1972coronet replied to Gramps46's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Lovely build there , @Gramps46. I have an original, 1962-issue version of this kit ; bought it because I was curious as to how "clean" its tooling was when new (versus the 1970s and 1980s iterations that I cut my teeth on). Too bad that it's ripe with the dreaded tyre burn... the Pontiac engine's almost unrecognisable ! Someday I'll get around to building it (kitbash required). Maybe I'll get a 'wild hair' and convert it to an F-250. -
Then there was the Jack Werst Mr. 5 & 50 "cheater" '70 Superbird , SS/EA . This car was built to go after the '70 SS-454 Chevelle convertible SS/EA champ. Just A Car Guy: the factory cheated too... Jack Werst's Super Bird, also known as the "Cheater Bird" was built specifically to take out Ray Allen, driving an LS6 Chevelle that was causing problems for Chrysler in a certain drag class.

Moebius 1964 Mercury Comet Pro Touring

I hadda do just that some 20 years ago - the throttle stuck-open on my dad's '99 Camry while he was driving ; I was the passenger. He totally froze-up, so I hadda take action -- I bumped the shifter (console auto) into Neutral, then turn-off the ignition... all with seconds to do so. We ended up crashing HARD into a lamppost - on the right-front (the side I was sitting in). Instantly, the thumb on my left hand sprung-back to my wrist as I was sucker-punched by the air bag. I ended up with a sprained thumb, cracked ribs and sternum, and abrasions on my once-flawless face ( that's also when I went bald and aged 20 years ! At least that's what I tell everyone). So, yeah... the "operator" of that 1,300hp death trap had plenty of time to bump-neutral and kill the ignition. -

Moebius 1964 Mercury Comet Pro Touring
1972coronet replied to Justin Porter's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I seem to remember that that fiasco was due to the aftermarket Wilwood brakes not being properly setup... I'll have to watch that video again. EDIT Combination of a sticky throttle and undersized-for-the-engine-power brakes. -

I've seen the "Dixie Cup" brake master on vehicles with swaps to bigger engines, upgraded differentials, sound systems, etc., etc. , and I thought the same thing : "Why ?!? All of that other work, and still crummy brakes ? And on a street-operated vehicle at that ?!?" -
I saw this disturbing trend coming more than 30 years ago : "Strive ! For Mediocrity !" Where I work now ( same line-of-work for almost 40 years ) I see more and more of these "offshore" replacement parts failing quickly and frequently. Sure, there's been subpar parts made in the USA over the decades, but at least there was accountability on the manufacturer's part ! Accountability went out the door a long time ago - step-over dollars to pick-up dimes...

What is your favorite sports car?
1972coronet replied to WillyBilly's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with the O.P.'s opinion on the C4's styling . I was in my early-mid teens when that radical design premiered - blew me away ! Too bad about the Miss-Fire fuel injection for '84. I remember being under the impression that TPI was going to be on that engine . Insofar as my favourite Sports Car is concerned : A friend's dad had a '71 Porsche 914 with a Chevy 327 in it. That car sat about a Post-It note off the ground ; its wheels were huge. He took me for a ride in that mother... Most frightening and thrilling ride ever ! Handled like it was on rails ; it was violently quick and mind numbingly fast, too. But, that thing was more of a beast than a Sports Car. I'll take a 1970-1973 Datsun 240Z , especially in Eurasian spec. -

1953-1956 F-250 Conversion ?
1972coronet replied to 1972coronet's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
IIRC . @Chuck Most did this ? I thought that there was an F-250 conversion of the Revell '56 around here... -

How many of you here have converted the AMT '53 , Monogram '55 , and / or Revell '56 F-100 to an F-250 or F-350 ? Please share your examples here or via a link.

MPC Super Charger - 1974 Charger rundown

I'll take those "TRON Grids" over the horrible Rally GT tyres that most of AMT's kits of that era were plagued with ! -

April Miles, 24-6-2025 . This is my Emily's sister. She ostensibly inherited the darker charcoal marques , as well as their daddy's physique ( Emily is still a pipsqueak ) .

MPC Super Charger - 1974 Charger rundown
1972coronet replied to CapSat 6's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The '72 400 was decent - it was hamstrung by the following year. However, the B-Engine (mainly the 383 and 400) is a great foundation for the 450" + cube stroker engines. The bigger-than-the-440 bore + a lower block skirt make for a better basis. The 1974 360 (first year for the aforementioned high-perf version) was truly a sleeper. Longer stroke than the 400 (the B-engines, all the same) made for a torque monster. The addition of , in essence, the 340's top end (cam , four barrel, exhaust manifolds) would make it sing. Timing was "poor" for the intro of the 245hp (net) 360. The first gas crisis fell upon the consumer only a couple of months into the model year (21-10-1973) and lasted until March 1974. However, the 4-speed was optional for '74 only (in spite of rumours to the contrary) , making that a one-year-only setup. The 360 lived on through the Malaise Era in the A-bodies and B-bodies ; the former having the option to delete the catalytic converters ( not in California, of course ), then abandoned them entirely for the '76 model year ( a '76 Dart Sport 360 - now 220hp - was top contender in a Car & Driver test / shootout ). -
MPC Super Charger - 1974 Charger rundown
1972coronet replied to CapSat 6's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ! I can think of a few , but they're not being brought up for reissue or new issue. BTW, a 360-powered 1974 Charger is better, IMO, than a choked-out 400 big block - all being equal. -
Considering that it's 40 years old ( I remember when it was new - bought one as well ) , that's not too bad. It's a bulky box to keep around ; looks as though FedEx had their way with it. IIRC, these were around 50$ U.S. back then - huge money ! Mine perished in the 1987 earthquake.

Just to be clear - we are discussing the original Eleanor (1971/1973 model) , no ? I've only watched a few vignettes of that c.1999 "remake", and was duly unimpressed. For me, it's the 1974 original ONLY. IIRC, Revell had at least some test shots of the 1973 parts for, ostensibly, a 1973 version , based on their 1971 kit(s). Other 'an a combination of 1971 & 1973 Mustang cosmetics (e.g., the one in the original film), the licence plates would be the only outward variable .
