A Dodge Charger for a chosen few, or lets roll with the CHP.
62rebel replied to Agent G's topic in Model Cars
chrysler should leave the European design school with Mercedes and get a refresher course in American muscle car design, IMHO. everything they make looks like a crib of a Benz. and yes, "Charger" should be a nameplate on a TWO DOOR car. -
that jacked up rear is how 90% of the hopped up cars looked in the '70's....yup; some Hi-Jackers need to be under there.... couple of Thrush Mufflers... and a Holley Carbs decal in the rear window.

good choice of color and a nice clean build!

i've built this kit several times and i have Revell's version that i just can't complete the way i want... IMHO the Revell has too much detail getting in the way when you want to customize the car. great if you stick to THEIR way, but not as easy to modify as the AMT or the Lindberg versions. i have one i built in So-Cal type red scallops on a white body, deleted running boards... one in pale pearl green with white interior.... they're like Styrene crack. can't stop with just one! they look great with the rake like you've got it. looking forward to more pics!

ahhh... yep; you're right. i had that one, and an original T.H.E. Cat Stingray roadster, that i had NO idea the rarity of. you're proving curbside promo-type models look GOOD with a bit of elbow grease and attention.

Harry.... i've got a new idea for your weekly brain-teaser..... have someone do this with a (fairly simple) kit every third week, taking out a few parts and the test is for someone to ID the kit, possible issue date/era, and the missing parts! that keeps the "real or model" and "auto ID" in a longer rotation, too. i think they do a similar game with random parts from old kits on a board at some shows.... ID as many parts to the kits they came from as possible.

wait; is the KS Willys the one with opening doors or the new GoodGuys version? i have two VERY cherished SWC Willys that i want to restore/redo....

Didn't MPC have a glue kit of the Mako that they re-released just before the AMT merger for a short time? i had a kit that looked a LOT like this but i'm NOT 100% sure it was a Mako. i don't have it, but i don't remember it being very builder-friendly, even for an adult builder! i'd like to have one of these to redo like yours... going to keep my eyes open.

Models in Grocery Stores ?
62rebel replied to TooOld's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
almost every place that had a cash register sold models when i was a kid.... some even at the hardware stores, but mostly all the drug stores and convenience stores, grocery stores, and discount department stores. i built most of the MPC Grand National series from kits bought at the local Kings grocery, and Drug Fair had a good twenty-four feet of shelves floor to shoulder with ambrosia..... everything from $1.99 JoHan to $7.99 Monogram Classics and Aurora monsters, Revell big scale trikes, funny cars, even a few IMC remnants from a couple years back (they seldom had "clearance" sales, they just kept old stock until it sold).... when Wallyworld quit the biz, they had the new Revell Merc at $7.99 for a while and i stocked up..... if i'd seen it coming, i'd have stocked up on the AMT repops they were selling so cheap. i let them pass, because i figured Wally would always have them..... -
Car modeler burns his house down
62rebel replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
what i take in from what i read is subject to MY interpretation of the story as given. i tend to be pretty skeptical of journalists as a rule. -
that is one avenue that has definite promise, but i foresee having to pay a subscription fee to be able to access the necessary data WHEN the ability to do this actually becomes practical and viable for the mainstream hobbyist. or, worse, being unable to share pics of them because the copyright owner controlling the images exclusively. in other words, the ability to do as we wish will depend on our ability to pay for the privilege of using their "images"..... there are people whose only job is to ensure that somebody PAYS their employer for their property, real or conceptual.

Car modeler burns his house down
62rebel replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i read something else into the article.... how a person with a simple hobby like building models managed to burn his house down and endanger the lives of his neighbors and the firefighters with a mistake in judgment that he should have known better about.... it's already becoming very difficult to obtain quality paint and related chemicals in many places; just imagine the knee-jerk reaction legislators will have (insurance underwriters too) when they realize how many of us have workbenches loaded with explosives!!! the reporter more than likely shares the myopic view of many who think we all "play with toy cars", and wanted to emphasize how silly and ironic it was that this guy's "toys" caused his house burning down. elsewhere there's a thread on whether this hobby will outlive us.... not if THIS kind of stuff happens very often. the inusrance industry will get our policies revoked if they find out we have paint and solvent in the house. -
licensing fees are one problem; constant detail changes from year to year are another. how many kits would we have available to us IF each and every annual were engineered separately from it's previous issue, and the owners of that design were not charging a fee for every unit sold? how many designs started off magnificently and devolved into something less over the years, yet the original tool had been recut so many times as to render an original version impossible? NASCAR and other forms of racing are extremely difficult to continuously kit new versions for, as those cars are constantly changing. just duplicating any given car from a specific RACE DAY might involve serious effort beyond assembling a kit from a box. the revenue generated by "collectible" items is now being drawn from the builders in this hobby, and it's tough to argue with the copyright owners over the difference between "hobby kits" and "junk from vendor tents at the races" in my book. they just want to see a paycheck for their logo/icon being used. i won't buy slogan t-shirts; bumper stickers; hats, or anything to wear that has a brand logo because i will NOT pay to advertise for someone else's product.

ahhhh... those 5gal plastic cans of AFFF firefighting foam..... i remember toting those up and down ladders on the ship..... no wonder i only weighed 145 when i got out. i was the duty section "compartment tester" on the fire and rescue detail.... fire drills every night... i could probably pick that dregger kit up today and STILL do the job!

looks like it belongs right in the Amherst High School lot circa 1980.

'63 Ed Martin Ford Galaxie 500...Curtis Turner's ride
62rebel replied to curt raitz's topic in WIP: NASCAR
his treatment by Nascar was, in effect, Bill France showing ALL of the current drivers who RAN the show. "don't rock the boat and don't ask questions" was the rule of the day, and Turner wasn't the guy to put up with that! love those interior shots of the 1:1, btw... a stock Galaxie bucket seat and still has door panels..... stock meant STOCK in them days. -
AMT scattered the necessary custom parts to do this (well; almost) over several kits.... and then never explained WHAT they were supposed to represent. you've captured every nuance of the Victorian IMHO.... very nice build. excellent...
-
nice.... very nice. you are another of the few who can superdetail without making a model look cluttered.

'63 Ed Martin Ford Galaxie 500...Curtis Turner's ride
62rebel replied to curt raitz's topic in WIP: NASCAR
Rangoon Red seems more orange than that. that car is probably not painted in any stock Ford color. i imagine that most dealership sponsored cars were painted in the dealership body shop if they were so equipped, and matching color codes was the least worry on their minds. that'll make a cool build nonetheless; looking forward to seeing your progress. -
What is a magneto?
62rebel replied to mnwildpunk's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
find yourself an old troybilt mower and take the ag off of it, hold the contacts and spin the drive gear..... you'll be through "playing" with a magneto for a while. they can, will, and do pack enough kick to... kick your... rear. ever have anybody charge a capacitor and toss it to you? something along those lines, just worse. electricity is nothing to play with. -
bending plastic strip without heat.
62rebel replied to Marcus M. Jones's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
if i were building something that large, with intricate curves, i'd rough out the desired pieces in sheet stock, laminate them and final shape them by sanding. that way, you're not "building in" any stresses that might come back to haunt you. -
something i have been working on
62rebel replied to jerseyjunker1's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
now you have to duplicate the way those tarps deteriorate in sunlight and wind..... which is probably why there are "blue tarp" restrictions some places.
