Kits I Picked up at the last Club meeting
kenb replied to Dave Wood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't know what I'm looking at either, but I wonder if that fan like part is for an open dragchute. Sure looks like it to me, it's too big to go anywhere on the car. Ken -
I asked George Barris for a signature 2 times. Once he just looked at me like I was crazy and walked off and the second time he wanted 10 bucks. I don't need his signature that bad. Many many years ago I was in Vegas (and winning good). My wife and I were at a store with autographed articles. We bought my son a signed Rangers hockey team photo. They had a framed card signed (and documented) by Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding. My wife said $250, no way. I'm still kicking my ass on that one. Had plenty of cash and let her talk me out of it. Ken

Johnathan, the ebay seller I used was estreetplastics. I just looked to see his prices and it apears that his store is inactive. I haven't bought from him recently, because the last time I bought a load. I guess I'll have to look for other sellers. There are a few who sell plastic in bulk. Ken

If you do a lot of scratch building as I do, You will find yourself buying all different sizes. An assortment pack just might be the right thing to start out with. I should buy stock in Plastruct, Evergreen and K&S. One thing I can tell you for sure, is that if you're going to buy sheet plastic, and you think you'll be using more in the future, buy it on line. I buy from an ebay seller. Get 20 times the product you would get from a Plastruct/Evergreen package. I mean 15 6"X12" sheets of excellent quality in various thickness for $10-15 (add $5 shipping). I think you would get 2-3 5"X7" sheets from plastruct for about $8 depending on thickness. Just my 2 cents. Ken

The "Rat Rig"
kenb replied to kenb's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Thanks everyone. The next build is going to be more on the clean side, but remember, even clean cars and trucks have a little grease and grime somewhere. Ken -
Let me tell you. I have to keep coming back to look at these pictures. This is an awesome build. I like the build, the subject, the colors, evrything. Well done. Ken

Hi everyone, these are some photos of the finished rat rig. It's built from a revell 41 Chevy pick up and a Revell W900 Kenworth. I used as much parts as possible from these kits. Everything else is scratch built or spare parts box items. Moved the front suspension to the rear, then built my own front suspension. Used part of the frame rails, shorthened and squeezed down the fuel tanks and built all the add on accessories. There is a build log in the On The Workbench forum showing some of the techniques I used. Well, now on to some more crazyness. Ken

I'm calling this one "DONE" I stayed up last night and put what I think were the finishing touches on it. There are a few more details that I would liked to have done, but I think this far into the build they would be very difficult to add and didn't want to chance ruining what I have (lesson learned). I want to thank everyone for their pleasant comments. I will be posting this build in the "Under Glass" forum when I am finished here, with all new pictures. I'll put one parting shot here. Now, on to the next creation !! Ken

My AWESOME haul today
kenb replied to Tye Brown's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice haul there. Well done. It's very rare that I find something like that. I never found that many great kits that cheap, maybe just one, once in a while. Ken -
Alyn, love your style of building. I'm picking up a lot of ideas from you. This is a very nice build. I also spend a lot of time scratch building to get the look I desire. Keep up the great work, I'm watching. Ken

Recuperating from double hernia surgery on valentines day. I can get around and feel my best when seated, which is what I do at the workbench. Here are some new pictures of the Rat Rig. They might seem repititious, but if you look at them there are changes. I mounted the grill and weathered it. Added a bunch of details. There isn't too much more to go and then I will call it done. I have another crazy project that I started a while back that I have dug out. It's in line for assembly when this is done. Thanks for looking. Ken

kit instruction site link
kenb replied to route66modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's a great website. I don't throw out any instructions. I save them to a folder in my filing cabinet. Got quite a few. Ken -
Been away in Hospital
kenb replied to Tom Setzer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Welcome back. I just had double hernia surgery yesterday. At home now. Ken -
Sorry to here this Rick. I know that you don't know me, I'm not that avid a poster, but I wish you luck. Take some advice, hang on to what you have, because you will build again. It might take awhile to come back, but you will. I did after many years. When you, do look me up and if I can help you with anything to get back in it I will. Promise. Ken

This is cool. Could you tell us how you louvered the hood. Ken

That's awesome. Love it. Ken

I'm not a cheapskate but I just can't see spending $5-10 on a pre-wired distributor when you can do it yourself. It's a little bit of a pain, but worth it. I take a flat file and file the tops of the wire posts on the distributor flat. Don't take off too much, just enough to get it flat on top. Then I take a pin and make an indentation directly in the center of all eight posts and the post for the coil wire. This is so the drill bit won't walk. I then very gently use a drill bit in a pin vise to drill out each individual one. Try to drill perfectly straight. I have good results doing it this way. Looks much more convincing than drilling the whole center out and sticking all the wires in together. You can actually do the proper firing order this way and it doesn't look like a cup that sprouted wires. Ken

Why Did Figures in Model Kits Disappear?
kenb replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There are members who are figure modelers at one of the clubs I belong to. It is a whole different thing to paint realistic figures. These guys are more artist than model builders, but with a little advice and instruction from them I have improved my figures 10 fold. If you really want to do it right, and I mean as realistic as the car model you are building, you will need to get some of the literature that's online or go to a figure show and make some friends (They're all a great bunch and share) and practice like crazy.
