About 85% complete. Almost there.
SpreadAxle replied to SpreadAxle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
As intricate as these stripes are, it's best to take lots of breaks in between, as they will try your patience. I hope you enjoy the results. I'm debating on doing the fenders. It seems natural to stripe them, too. I just don't wanna overdo it. Here they are in progress. Just connect the dots. This actually was fun, just time consuming. It and the luberfiners are all I did today. Thanks for looking. -

Sunday, a bad day for ebay auctions??
SpreadAxle replied to Modellpularn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I hope you don't think I was attacking you. Just having a little fun. I don't blame you for using this method. I actually think it's strange not to sell to a paying customer based on where they live. I've shipped overseas before and it's no big deal. Last year, when I bought two lots of resin truck cabs, I had several offers to buy one or two out of the lot. The cabs I didn't want, were sold. Some went overseas. A paying customer is a paying customer in my opinion. I don't care where someone is from if they are interested in what I'm selling. As to my buying, well, I'm a truck driver so I'm gone a lot. I have several friends that let my packages come to their home for me. However, they have lives and jobs. I noticed that the mailman, and sometimes UPS/FEDEX won't leave the packages if no one is there if it comes from outside the US. This is why I try to buy more from US sellers. My friends are doing me a favor, so I don't want them having to make extra trips to the post office for me. Again, I know they have lives, and although they don't mind, I would rather the package be there when they come home from work at night. 8) -
Hey everyone. I have it repainted, and almost finished. It isn't perfect, but not bad for the first paintjob in 10 years. It gave me a chance to use some stripes I'vw been wanting to use, I only have the bumper done so far. Thanks to all of you again for your help, advice, and setting me straight. I still have a few details left, just thought you'd like to see it.

That is so sneaky  ! LOL. That is a neat idea though. Well worth it. Ebay is a place where survival skills are a must, so that is a good solution. 8) -

Nothing wrong with the Volvo. My stepdad's last car was an S80. These S series Volvos are nice. Ride smooth and handle well. -

Thanks Tim. If you look at the cover truck on the Autocar brochure I posted, that's where I got the idea for the stripes. The bumper stripes at least. The cab and hood will have the same pattern. I really think it does well for an early 70's look. -
Well, the rear wall and it's corner fillers, plus the roof, are now installed. This was a fairly easy build. Next step is the engine. I at least want to start on the basics anyhow. A coat of primer goes on this weekend. Liek I said, this is one of those in between my other project kind of builds as it has to wait on me to gather info. Thanks for looking.

I repainted the body parts. Now comes the fun part, decaling. When you look at the bumper you will see what I mean. The blue pinstripes on the bumper are from the Kangaroo Decals pinstripes and scrolls set, light blue. I will do the doors, and hood panels the same way, but these are thin, so it takes patience. I wish I had some blue numbers for the bumper. Anyhow, enjoy the pix, and thank you all for your encouragement. I know this model isn't perfect, but it is the first thing I've done in 10 years. I kept the Diamond Reo air cleaner from the original build.

I discovered this trick by accident. I had a metal can sitting in my bedroom that filled part way with water to apply some decals. It was a small tin can that contained candy originally. I forgot to dump the water out, and it was in a corner, so I forgot about it. After about 2 weeks, I went to dump the can. The water had rusted the can somewhat, so when I picked the can up, the water sloshed and I could see the powder portion of the rust, and the idea hit me. I was 13 at the time and just getting started building models of trucks. I had read about weathering models to look rusty, and I knew that exhaust manifolds and pipes would be the first items to rust, so I took a brush, dipped it in the rusty water, and took it to the exhaust manifold of a recently completed truck model. When the water dried, I had a rusty manifold, with real rust. So find a can you don't need, but I don't believe a soda can will do it, and put a little water in. Let the can sit a little while. The longer you leave it, the darker it should be. Not bad for finding out accidentally. 8) I hope it helps.

I have to ask, how did you learn the taste trick? I never heard of that one. But hey, if it works, well go for it then

Come to think of it, and I just remembered this, if you look at my Ford LN 8000 hot shot posts, you can see my frame, which is still unpainted. That was the long frame of the Ford Shorthauler van chopped down for a tractor. You can see the green putty spot on the rails where I rejoined the shortened sections of rail. At the time, I didn't reinforce, but it has held. It is a short farme though. Definately reinforce a stretched frame without question.
-
What Rick showed in his pic is an example of the frame reinforcement I was talking about. That is a very good job as far as what you can see in the pic. This gives added strength. I always like a crossmember nearby to help keep things even, but this is a must for a really long frame especially. I don't know what the project is, but if you're like me, I lift my truck models by their frame just behind the cab, sleeper, so I deinately like to make sure that area is solid for when the truck must be handled.

Good start. -
Usually when the real thing is stretched, the frame is cut somewhere ahead of the drive axles, but usually it's close to the back, or even under the sleeper, depending on who's doing it. Depending on how long you make the truck, make sure the rails are reinforced, and add a crossmember in the new section. Try to make your cuts where thing like fuel tanks or frame mounted tool boxes will cover up at least one of the points where you section in the new piece of frame. I try to use a section of another truck kits frame. In other words, to stretch a kewnworth, I cut another kenworth's frame down for what I need. You can use some Evergreen/Plastruct for rails as well. I just use truck frames to be sure to have bolt details, and the exact same rail size. Good luck.

What do you drive?
SpreadAxle replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Both of my rides are 2002 model year trucks. Here's a pic of the big one. My little truck that I drive when I'm home I can't find my pix of, but it's a 2002 Chevy Sliverado extended cab, Forest Green Metallic is the color. It's the 4th personal vehicle I ever had. It's also the only thing I ever bought brand new. 2 more payments and she's all mine. 4.8L V8, all the goodies, Graphite Gray cloth interior. I love this little truck and I'm keeping it. I don't want to go through the thing of making payments again, and I'm not that crazy about a lot of the newer body styles on cars and pickups. So I will be keeping this truck. Eventually I will add some graphics. The tractor is being painted to match. Green is my favorite color. Eventually, models will be built of both. -
Sunday, a bad day for ebay auctions??
SpreadAxle replied to Modellpularn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I personally have noticed that when buying, the USA only guys help me as far as less possible competition on the bid, but I noticed those late night endings are better for me. As far as weekends vs weekdays, well, it depends on how you look at it. For some, after a long day at work, they come home, have dinner, and are occupied with family. And the kids tend to tie up the computer anyway. On weekends, not everyone goes out, so I feel like I have more competition when bidding, as these people will be at the computer longer. then again, the other points made were very valid. I've only ever sold items once, and mine ended on a Wednesday between 7 and 10 pm central time. I'm sure if I had not included Buy It Now options on everything, I would've gotten more, but I guess we live and learn. More than 1/2 my stuff went by next morning. Other items went here and there before the end, and 2 or 3 held out until the last minute. Only 2 items didn't have buy it now. i would've shipped anywhere, but I didn't know I had to take an xtra step when listing. Again, live and learn, right. -
Hey man, did you have any luck? :?:

By the way, here she is before stripping. The cab only had one coat. It and the bumper were the only things that looked right as far as no cracks in the paint. This mock up was just to get an idea of how it would look. the other pic was as far as I got, although the cab is the only part that wasn't finished yet, just there for reference.
