Lone Star Build
ap40rocktruck replied to baddgass's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
It is truly amazing the ideas that can come from ones creative mind.......... On the steering, since the center axle you have already mounted is a driven (powered) rigid axle with a power divider & dual tires, how exactly will it "articulate" with the front axle??? What happens to the power in the drive shaft when the 1st axle in the rear tandem also has a power divider? Seems to be a slight stretch of a modern engineering marvel........ Ap40 -
Kenwork T 800 snow plow

Simply Outstanding!! the details you have replicated so true to reality, especially the hydraulic solenoids & valve assembly behind the cab, to the hydraulic motors of the sand spinner & related cross feed drives. Fittings are all perfect on both the air & hydraulic circuits. Ap40 -
Another vintage Kenworth cabover
ap40rocktruck replied to BigBad's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Great looking finished rig. Color, detail, spokes on the rears. Knocked it out of the park. I would suggest removing the chain from the top bar of the exhaust bracket thou, as it might fall & snag in the drive line or at the very least rub the paint of the back of the cab! Ap40 -
Mack Granite
ap40rocktruck replied to hooknladderno1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks brother! If i were to pattern up & cast a new hood for the CL cab, I would do the Vision (CXU) set back front axle & one of the most popular units for OTR, LTL, TL, common carriers and so on. Day cab, sleeper, fairings, the whole lot. JMO Ap40 -
Mack is a mere dog on the hood of a Volvo UD (Nissan Diesel) is also owned by Volvo Freightliner, Western Star & Sterling / Ford Louisville -now dead are all Daimler Chrysler, which also includes Fiat Paccar = Kenworth, Petercar, DAF, Foden, Ken-Mex, Carco / Gearmatic & Braden winch Navistar / Caterpillar still happily married Oshkosh has been buying up across the board: Jer-dan, London, McNeilus, JLG, Medteck, Pierce, IMT, Frontline, Coneco At times the buying & selling has been a dizzying array of confusion. Now we have the Chinese & Koreans eyeing to buy up bigger slices of the pie. Eventually it will come down to 2 or 3 that rule the global............I digress Back to the bench, more work to do.... Super detail as usual Alain! Flawless matching of the diamond plate on the front face of the fenders. The wing blade & rollover blades are amazing. Ap40 -
Mack is just a nameplate & the dog on the hood. with in 2 years the CL cab will be a thing of the past, Every current Mack product (all 6 of them) is powered by a Volvo motor painted a different color & called a "MP" so the rocker cover (plastic) says Mack & the intake manifold has the engine size cast into it, but every part will interchange with the Volvo of the same displacement. MP-7 = D-11, MP-8 = D-13, MP-10 = D-16. The "NEW" Mack M-drive is the Volvo I-Shift painted red. Mack still makes the camel back rear suspension & the top load axles, but it is unclear as to how much longer they will survive. As i look back at the past, and although i enjoyed working for Mack Trucks, I am glad to have left before being corrupted into believing the Mack brand will survive the Volvo Way. Ap40

1960's Cummins Diesel?

Well stated & correct, I was referring to the BLOCK dimensions, as overall dimensions are greatly effected by accessories, manifolds etc.. -
A Kenworth W900 daycab tri axle
ap40rocktruck replied to marcay's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
AHHH, just like all the other RoG US type truck offerings, no day cab only a cheesy insert that sort of fits the walk thru for the bunk. But at least they give you that. Italeri does not even offer a filler panel. Ap40 -
If you want to be dead on accurate with the CL-700, then a scratch frame is the only way to go. The CL used the same frame as the Superliner (RW-700) with the splayed out front section to accommodate the big Mack V-8 E-9. All of the other Mack engines during the CL-700 run could be had, along with other engine suppliers such as Cat, Cummins & DDC. The last of the CL-700's could be spec'd with the Cummins Sig-600. Transmissions from Mack & vendors could be spec'd, including the Allison automatics, aux boxes & a few have been fitted with all wheel drive from the factory. As for rear suspensions, on the tandem the factory would install Mack camel back, hard-bar & air suspensions with ratings from 34,000 to 80,000 capacity. There have been many with field or aftermarket mods where planetary axles up to 130,000# capacities were installed. For the CH-600, the standard frame was the same as the Superliner (RW-600), just as all Mack frames since 1963 are splayed out in the front, but the "600" chassis is lighter spec'd for fleet & LTL / TL freight hauling. Mack being Mack, would build a CH-600 just as heavy as the customer ordered, which included the 700 series chassis & frame rails & rear tandems up to 65,000# One of the most common versions of the CH-600 here on the east coast is a single axle day cab tractor for LTL carriers such as New Penn, Roadway, NEMF just name a few. On the CH-613, the frame for these is the "Cornerstone" chassis from Volvo. Still splayed out in the front, but now a straight rail bumper to tail. In the set forward front axle design, which is more common with OTR, TL & LTL, there is a rising number of companies spec'ing the CH-613 for day cab heavy haul, with either Mack or vendor axles on air suspension. Overall, if you want air rear suspension, then any kit you want as a donor will work, the same for axles for non-Mack. For Mack rears up to 80K, use the offerings from AITM http://www.aitruckmodels.com/ Engines are the tough part, Auslowe makes a E-7 E-tech version, which is good for up to the 460XT version. RNK Conversions used to offer the E-9 500hp v-8 w/ CAC. Auslowe also has one, but w/out the CAC. For pre-EPA-07 emissions the only Mack engine would be the E-7 Acert, which can be made with quite a bit of re-work on the Auslowe E-7 E-tech. Sorry if this is too much, but hopefully it helps. Ap40

Another vintage Kenworth cabover
ap40rocktruck replied to BigBad's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I cast these as I have more of the AMT Aerodyne kits than the RoG. LOL As for the rest of the old K-100 kit, it was a fantastic kit when it was new on the shelves, and now with a little bit of work it can be a great kit of today, just as you have done here. Great look all around. Ap40 -
1960's Cummins Diesel?
ap40rocktruck replied to Swifster's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
OK, i looked in my Cummins files, the 555 which shares the same block as the 502 is 26 5/16" long, whereas the 903 block is 29 21/32" long. But just about every other overall dimension is with in fractions of an inch of being the same. This comparison is for both engines being non-turbo versions. Both are 90 degree wedge design, and the only other major difference is the deck height which is approx 1" taller on the 903. This corrisponds with the the 1" difference in stroke. So if you were to take a 903 from the ERTL 4200 or a resin version, to convert it to a reasonable 555, you will need to remove 3 scale inches (3.0mm in 1/25) from the length of the block, heads & rocker covers, then shave 1.0 mm from the deck (top of block where head mounts on each side) to lower the heads. Also noted that the oil pan on the 903 is a deep to the rear of block type where the most commonly used on the 502 & 555 were deep from 1/3 to the rear of block. The 502 & 555 were very popular in construction equipment and were a favorite in the smaller Hough, Clark, Michigan front end loaders. hope this helps Ap40 -
I am still looking for more images to add, but here are 2 from a old Mack history book. Nice cutaway of the SCAC system. Also 2 images of SCAC engines as fitted to 2 different DM-800SX's. 1 with the hood scoop & the other with 2 air cleaners. Ap40

Another vintage Kenworth cabover
ap40rocktruck replied to BigBad's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Attached is a photo of a resin cast pair of cab mounts for this kit, but these mount to the underside of the interior bucket so that the cab will tilt correctly & the end result is much stronger than the kits tiny originals which we all know are horrible to work with. Ap40 -

Mack Granite
ap40rocktruck replied to hooknladderno1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes they do all share the same 25+ year old all steel welded cab. One of the best in the industry, but like everything else Volvo gets there hands on, this too will soon be a distant memory and fall in line for what Mack trucks used to be. As for converting a CH hood into a Granite, why? it is completely different & would be much simpler to work from a clean slate. I suspect if one is done, it will be the set forward axle, late model version with the larger grille opening. But for accuracy, if the current / late model version is offered then so should the MP-8 engine & all of the supporting EGR-DPF-SCR emissions must be included for accuracy. Ap40 -
1960's Cummins Diesel?
ap40rocktruck replied to Swifster's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
the 555 & 903 share the same platform, and i think (not certain) that the block is the same. I will look in my files & post what i find. Ap40 -
Your best bet is to scratch one. the tall top cleaners in the MPC / AMT /ERTL DM-800 has the side detail for starting the process, but the true unit you are looking for has not been modeled or offered in resin by anyone. In the real world of truckin & power from any of the 673 -675's w. SCAC, we found that when under load, the tip fan pulled air so hard that it would starve the engine of combustion air. SCAC = Series Charge Air Cooled, this was the cooler that was part of the intake manifold front 1/2. The tip fan (also called the tip turbine) was driven by pressurized air via a small pipe connecting the fan turbine to the engine intake air tube between the intake turbo outlet & the cooler / manifold inlet. when more power is needed & the driver presses down on the accelerator, more fuel to the engine = hotter exhaust - spins the turbocharger faster = pushes more air to the tip fan, which is pulling filtered air from the same air cleaner to blow across the manifold mounted cooler. It is this action that was starving the engine of combustion air. The end result was Mack adding the reversed hood scoop to the hood. In the quarry, we added a second air cleaner (on the DM-800's) under the front fender, right behind the head lamp to feed only the engine combustion air (turbo intake). Then the air cleaner up on the side of the cab feeds air only to the cooling airflow thru the tip fan & cooler grid. In my files i have the engineering layout for how this works, i will dig it out & post it later. I will also find a few photos of the under hood connections for the "hood Scoop" SCAC. Ap40

Revell Aeromax 120 - Cummins N14?
ap40rocktruck replied to vincen47's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It is kind of close, with a new set of heads & rocker covers it will be better. BUT in the Ford L chassis you will still need to tilt the block 10 degrees to the right (passenger side).to make it sit correctly in the chassis. Ap40
