Anyone for accurate diorama pieces 1-24th ?
ra7c7er replied to Eshaver's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I like a little of everything from the very early days to modern stuff. I would like to see some modern pumps and things being made to dio a modern day garage/gas station. But I also would like to see a lot of early things too. Really I don't think you could go wrong just making stuff that isn't already out there. 60's or later and 40's or earlier. Or even making better quality pieces of what is available. Just keep your quality up and no matter what you make you will find yourself with customers. -
I am looking for race cars with actual sponsorship (any type) on the car as was said just because it was kitted doesn't mean it was sponsored. Anything toy car is fine to mention but keep it to diecast, model, and slot car (since I mentioned that already). Here is a pick of the snake and Mongoose cars. Alex Tagliani Hot Wheels Indy car Also, I just found out that AMT didn't just sponsor the Piranha they built it.

I used to work at a Tuesday Morning. It's the strangest and coolest store all in one. An upscale Big Lots is exactly how to describe it. I hope my local one has a couple of those Ford C-900's at $20 they are half what most hobby shops want. I wonder what other models might be in stores. Not every store gets everything.

New hobby shop in Apex NC
ra7c7er replied to rlz58's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The 60 mile drive to get supplies is exactly why they opened. All of the Hobby towns here in St. Louis have closed since the economy tanked but there are several local shops they couldn't compete with. Nice to see shops opening anywhere though. I live right next to belleville, IL and there is probably on of the last Model only shops in the states. They only carry Revell and AMT car models but carry just about everything military, air, ship, etc. It's an interesting shop that when you walk in looks like you are going back in time a couple decades. -
I asked this on another forum and got a few answers but several people their said they thought there was more that they couldn't remember so I am asking here. Who and what was sponsored by a model kit company? The few I already know I will list. Also if you have any pics of the car sponsored post them up it would be neat to see. -Gene Snow's Revellution (Revell) guess that's why it's spelled with 2 L's -Jungle Jim (Revell) Which of his cars were sponsored -The Piranha drag car (AMT) - this is the car that made me ask the question -Oscar Kovaleski's can-am car possibly carried Aurora and MPC stickers (Aurora, MPC) I couldn't find any pictures of the car with anything to confirm this -Bob Hamilton's Red Alert Drag 1970 Chevelle (AMT) -Tamiya possibly sponsors some salon racers but I couldn't find anything to confirm -AMT possibly sponsored several stock cars but I couldn't find any info on this either Just for some added content two slot car companies sponsor(ed) race cars in the last few years that I know of. SCX sponsored a super bike in 2008. I am not sure if they still do. I have seen pictures of the bike and on tv coverage but for the life of me can't find any now. Fly Car Model sponsored a WTCC car about 6 years ago that was also sponsored by an Amsterdam brothel at the same time. Guess they wanted to cover the entire family with that one. That one I won't show a pic of but it's not hard to find. If you have any photos of those listed post them up (with model sponsorship showing) and if you know any others not mentioned here or can confirm any of the possibles definitely post up.

Neat looking. Weren't those cars just underpowered Ferraris? Those rear tires are huge.

I have raced everything from Go-Karts to SCCA and even got in a Craftsman truck series truck , didn't qualify, and I help test for the ARCA dirt races at Springfield and Duquoin. I'm not award wise very accomplished but like you I am way way more accomplished than a guy and his son who thrash expensive cars up and down a mountain. That mountain is step but it's not very difficult. Most high school kids have more control than that, at least the farm boys where I went to high school did. Accomplishment doesn't mean how much money you have just go to any Skip Barber racing school you will see the first guy to wreck his car is always the kid going on Daddies dime. It's fun to be around when that phone call happens. And for those of you who are saying that it's hard to control a burnout in a car like that,it might be but all they did was mash the throttle like 15 year olds. Sustaining a burnout or doughnut requires throttle finesse and these two have no clue. Just do a search for Cobra burnouts and you will see several with drivers who have tons more control and smoke than the yahoo and his son in the vids here. Anyone can mash the throttle with the wheels cocked and go in circles. Must be nice to destroy something you paid six figures for.
-
Accomplished in what way? I can't find anything about him other than he traded a 206 GT for this car. A kid that young with enough money to have cars like that is either playing with his dads toys or his dads money. I know a bunch of 15 year old farm boys that can pull burnouts like that. The car is really cool though. It must be awesome to have the connections to be able to do pointless burnouts in those cars. If that kid really wants to show off his skills he needs to head to a track day then lets see what he can do. I also don't like people that buy nice cars and don't do anything with them. It annoys me more though when i see a Mustang or a Corvette doing 15 under the speed limit than when I see a nice classic car sitting in a garage.

Revell /Gears National model car contest??
ra7c7er replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wonder if the next season of Gearz is going to be more hot rod oriented. Stacy does more trucks than anything else and only two of the 11 builds on the show have been hot rods. He has said on his show several times it's fun to build something not many others are and show wise he tries to stay way from doing more common things. It's funny that his contest would be for one of the most common classifications of show cars. Hot rods are popular build ups though so I can see why that is what has been picked. -
Revell /Gears National model car contest??
ra7c7er replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow, I missed it when I looked for it earlier. Your right it's right on the front page. They must have updated it in the last week or so because the contest link and c-mas link were not up when I on the site over Thanksgiving weekend. But the contest is listed now. All we need now are hobby shops that actually have the info for the contest. -
Revell /Gears National model car contest??
ra7c7er replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There is nothing on stacydavid.com or revells website. I do agree that it has been publicly mentioned but it seems strange that nowhere has any information about it besides the guy who is doing the promotion for it. The hobby shop I used to work at doesn't have any information about it other than they heard about it at the ihobby show and neither do any of the other hobby shops in the St. Louis area I have contacted. When I contacted Revell about several weeks ago they told me they didn't have any information about it and I needed to contact my local shop because some information has already been sent out. But so far NO ONE I have contacted has any of this so called info. I have even contacted out of the area hobby shops and they don't have any info either. -
Revell /Gears National model car contest??
ra7c7er replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have heard about this too. But I heard it was going to be during the fall. Seems like there is so little info and many industry people claim to know nothing. The hobby shop I used to work at contacted Revell and they played dumb. In fact the only place I have seen the announcement was on another model forum which was sent a press release from a promotional company. You would think something so big would be announced everywhere but there is nothing on Revells website or the Gearz website or on Speed or anywhere else for that matter. It just seems so strange that this promoter would pick that one model forum and no others and hasn't announced anywhere else no magazines not on the show during season 4 or anywhere. It sounds really cool but seems really fishy to me. -
What is your dream model kit?
ra7c7er replied to Jordan White's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Shhh... you can't mention that car the big three will get you. --- I would like to see an E30 325is bmw. It's in between the i and the M3 basically it's just a lower powered version of the M3 with most of the goodies. Many BMW enthusiasts even say the "is" at that time had better suspension balance than the M3 and was more reliable. -
Tamiya Fine Gray Primer Not Available
ra7c7er replied to Duntov's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Floquil is probably the next best primer specifically to hobby use. Alclad is good too but I don't have an airbrush so I don't have any direct experience with it. I only know what others have told me. -
I went to the same show and I saw a few questionable winners. Sometimes I think great paint jobs mask ok builds to non-professional judges. The cars did look nice though. --- Someone already mentioned race cars but I always get a smile when I see a super glossy oval race car. I have been racing oval cars since I was 11 and I have never raced a car that was as glossy as many race models I see. Race cars look so shiny because of the way the camera picks up the glare of the sun not because they actually are that way. If you look at a race car, actual car not a car in a museum, they are fairly dull to at most mildly semi gloss. I do agree that you should build what and how you like if you want your race car to have a super glossy paint job then do it but at the same time you can't get bent when someone says it's not very realistic. Because, well it's not. As for a "show car" I don't think their is such a thing as too glossy. I have gone to car shows where on sunny days you couldn't look directly at some cars.

Tamiya "Mica" Paints
ra7c7er replied to camaroman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was told the same thing from the hobby shop I used to work at. Really put a kink in my current builds since I won't use anything other than Tamiya primer. I have used Floquil in the past on other projects and it is much better than Testors primer but not as good as Tamiya's primers or at least what Tamiya's primers used to be, IMO. -
Perhaps you should assign a Lemons supreme court judge (just like at a real race) to decide what is in or out as a legal to build and run the buildup like an actual race since the fun during the race is far more important than the actual finish. The last two Lemons cars I built were built specifically to try and get destroyed by vote. It would be neat to have all the fun of that during the build. Maybe dock people X number of building days for infractions or *gulp* be destroyed before the end of the build, etc. -- If you haven't read through the rules everyone should read them. They are great. 3.16: Bad-Weather Visibility: It's your job to figure out which bad-weather visibility aids will be most useful for your car. Wipers, Rain-X, tearoffs, small squeegee-wielding children tied to the hood, etc. are all acceptable. If your visibility appears compromised during the race for any reason, you may be black-flagged until conditions improve.

Ranger Trailer
ra7c7er replied to Chuck Most's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Looks great. -
They have three separate races in Kershaw, SC. Roughly a 6 hour drive from you it's not that bad. You should go out to one of the races you will be hooked. --- One of the rules needs to be a car you could buy for $500 or less right now. You can't build up a 50's - 70's muscle car because even in parts the car would be worth more than 500. Maybe limit the build to cars that have ran in the Lemons races in the last few years.

D.J.s mad 1/16th scale 63 promod vette
ra7c7er replied to djsmadplastic's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Amazing work. I have one of those kits in pieces and knowing what it looks like to the way you have it is just mind blowing. -
Sounds like a good idea. I have to find the right car now.
