Scale auto renaissance?
Lunajammer replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have to think technology factors into it. I would think it's cheaper and more efficient now than ever to clean up derelict and damaged molds. Software programs can design new subjects and tools faster and with less labor. Dies being cut with speed and precision we didn't have five years ago. Who knows, there might be more start up companies watching the success level of Moebius with intense interest. -
From one snail to another, welcome aboard.

"TOY" cars indeed. Maybe they're right.
Lunajammer replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've always thought this is a particularly handsome custom. Forget comparing it to a Pinto. Kits like these look so little like the real thing I look at them as stand alone customs. The point was driven home more at the NNL North when someone on the primer table was converting a pathetic Palmer Corvette into a custom and it was brilliant. Rather than trying to salvage the Corvette look, he was discarding the recognizable accuracies and embracing the inaccuracies for a totally different looking custom with half the work already done. Toy or radical custom I guess depends on what you do with it. -
I'm thinking hotter water. I've had acceptable results by heating the water to just under boiling, then dipping it momentarily, shaping and setting with cold water. Otherwise maybe just try and find a plastic AMT Bonneville hood.

Flat paint in contests
Lunajammer replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
One of the highest ranking models I've ever seen personally was a flat finished, meticulous rod. But it all harkens back to my first piece of advice ever offered to me for contests. "Gotcha Factor." The gut wow. I think it's in our DNA to perk up to shiny objects. But regardless of sheen, if the immediate impact is wow, even before pen lights, magnifying glasses and calipers come out, you're halfway home. A separate category for sheen I'm afraid will happen slowly. -
The blessing is I doubt he ever knew the severity of his wreck. Listen to Johnny, Harry. Everybody who knows and participates in thrill sports acknowledges the possibility of the worst. It's not an original thought and doesn't make you a jerk. Blurting it out while people are still in shock and mourning is what make you heartless. It's simple respect for the victim and those who cared. The sort that is tossed aside with such ease these days.

cutting open doors
Lunajammer replied to stulee11's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw the thread technique demonstrated at a club meeting. It was so efficient, precise and the cut line was very fine, very little plastic lost. The BIG trick though, is how to best secure your car without damage while yanking on the thread hard enough to cut plastic. -
I watched the whole thing, race and post. Pretty emotional. Hard to believe. Hard to see so many heroes from that race in tears and embraces.

Decal Tray - A Very Handy New Tool

I'm afraid I'd cut it up into custom parts. -
Who here buys collections?
Lunajammer replied to TurboKitty's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would urge you keep posting on Craigslist. Most collectors I personally know are not builders so they don't visit this site or shop ebay much. But they ALL watch Craigslist like hawks for lots, auctions and estate sales, etc. They are traders and sellers and like the simplicity of dealing locally if it means gathering up boxes of kits (rather than paying shipping). -
Who else likes watching cartoons?
Lunajammer replied to Ben's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For those of us who enjoyed Space Ghost as kids in the 60's, I found Space Ghost Coast to Coast so funny I'm still laughing. Unfortunately, for the few Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes I've seen, I have yet to crack a smile. I SO don't get it. I must be out of the demographic. I'm pretty much on board with most of everything else on the previous posts. -
What can we learn from Steve Jobs?
Lunajammer replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Let's also not forget that his wealth is not all liquid. That's not just hoarded cash, but includes wealth tied up in assets, commerce, jobs and economic flow. That, in itself, is doing something for us. -
What can we learn from Steve Jobs?
Lunajammer replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've worked with two extraordinarily successful entrepreneurs. They were callous, demoralizing and treated the very people who made them rich like necessary liabilities. Yet I have immense respect for their vision, accomplishments and commitment. I've concluded that most successful entrepreneurs are goal oriented visionaries. It's their very nature to swiftly and impressively scale obstacles, which includes other people's opinions and feelings, in pursuit of their mission. We who work for them may not like it, but it's not a bad thing to be a tool in their box and contribute to something great. Frankly, most of us who are sympathetic to the human condition could never be like that, it's not in our nature. But if we recognize and understand that they may have never had the chance to learn people skills then we won't take their lack of tact personally. As I told my girlfriend, Steve Jobs made great accomplishments at the expense of the things that you and I would never sacrifice, but we get to benefit from it. -

Yup, don't get hasty about the finish after you've invested so much in the build up. Take your time. This public service message brought to you by THE SLOWEST MODEL BUILDER IN THE WORLD! -

Chuck, I thought a tubbing was going to look dorky but I was way wrong. That looks REALLY neat. Looks powerful.

I like the idea of a show car. Something of the same vintage, like maybe these. I don't know how much money or energy you'll have left after Bride of Deora, but even Bat-ifying something like an Avanti might be cool. My first thought was build the chassis and interior of a Corvette or 57 T-Bird and build a body around it with blister packaging, sporks or whatever plastic shapes you can find. Hopefully these would be kits that are still fairly accessible. -

Cool steering. It's a submarine yoke. Don't hit the breaks too hard and slide that forward, it might take a couple hundred fathoms to get back. And that my friend is.... (wait for it) no YOKE! Geez I kill me. (Nice touch on the headrests by the way).
