Next model choices

If you have an Ollies nearby, they might have the Viper GTS for $8.00. -
Rob, I'm not questioning your info. All I can say is that I have some Detail Master wire and a couple of their distributor kits, and that wire is definitely smaller than the 32 gauge insulated that I bought, which is smaller than the 30 gauge insulated wrapping wire that I got from Radio Shack.
-
The Detail Master wire is probably 34 gauge insulated, maybe 36. I like 30 gauge insulated wire for race or custom wires, but I prefer 32 or 34 insulated for stock wires. 30 gauge without insulation would be fine for stock wires. I just like insulated wire because it looks like, well, insulation. 30 guage insulated looks good for battery cables.

Will we ever see their like again?

It seems like it's just the opposite now. My Focus hatchback looks almost identical to a Subaru Impreza, Mazda 3, or a Golf. None of them have parts or platforms in common. -
IMO, 30 gauge insulated wire is a bit big for stock plug wires. I bought some 32 gauge from http://www.micronmeters.com/c-46-insulated-wire.aspx. and really like it. Only $0.26 a foot. The 34 gauge might work as well. The lady I spoke to is really nice and very helpful, but please remember she has to make a living, and it takes time to process and ship a small order, so don't waste her time buying 10 feet. I bought 50 feet and should be set for life.

That looks like Marilyn Monroe.

In addition to accent, I find the pace of speech interesting. It seems we have an inner rhythm to how we converse. Fast talkers will finish sentences or step on sentences of slower talkers, because at their pace, they would have finished the sentence. Slow talkers will pause before replying, because at their pace, they wouldn't expect a sentence to be finished that fast. I think this is mostly unconscious, but it makes a difference in how we perceive people. Fast talkers are seen as pushy and rude, slow talkers as stupid.

Your points are all well taken, Charlie. I suppose the basic intent of public education has always been to educate children beyond the level of their parents. I do not know what IA is, but when I was in school, Home Ec was an elective, and almost exclusively girls. Perhaps that has changed. Hopefully, these classes are taught with more professionalism than the so-called "health" classes we had. Those were taught by a coach who went thru the motions, only because he was required to do something more than sit in his office all day. The demise of "shop" classes is criminal. Not everyone can or should go to college. An alternative that could lead to a decent job is necessary. Plus, all students could benefit from some basic practical knowledge. Really, all forms of education, including art and music, are valuable. I hope that all students are exposed to everything at some level, even, as Bill said, the elementary level. Managing a checking account is simple adding and subtraction, first or second grade stuff.

Yeah, that amazes me as well. I've seen interviews with Hugh Laurie where he talks with his natural English accent, but on "House" he sounded totally American. Incidentally, my name is also Hugh, but I cannot hide my accent, and I'm not rich!

Now I understand. I was thinking you want to make things for your own use. As far as making custom furniture goes, that is part of what I do, and I must say "Be careful what you wish for". It is a tough way to make a living.

As a professional woodworker, I have $50,000 in tools and machinery, and a large shop. But that is mainly because I have to be able to turn out large quantity, quickly, while still maintaining quality. On the other hand, up until the mid 19th century, most woodworking was done by hand. Your models show that you already have the skills to do hand woodworking, you would simply be working on a larger scale. So if you really have a passion for it, you could get all the tools you need for less than the cost of a Pocher kit (), and you wouldn't need a huge space. It does take longer and might fall into your "hard labor" category though. With your art background, you might enjoy marquetry, very little cost or space required. My other hobbies are playing guitar (poorly), woodcarving, marquetry, canoeing, and restoring old machinery. My pride and joy is a 1929 mortiser, all cast iron, big as a refrigerator, weighs 1/2 ton, and works better than anything you could buy new for any price. I've built a couple of R/C aircraft, grow my own vegetables, and enjoy shooting off a few rounds from time to time.

I agree, Bill. That is what teachers should be doing. The numbers you cite are disgraceful. But if our schools are failing to teach even the basics of English, math, science, and history, maybe parents should at least take care of teaching domestic chores, basic finance, and manners.
