The AWB Edsel is very kinky!

Very Cool! I really like to see builders accur-izing their models or changing them to a variation of the original kit. It's fun.

Couple pics of an old built up....
Modelmartin replied to Len Geisler's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Is that a Jo-Han 71 with a 70 grill or a 70 annual kit? Nice to see another Sox & Martin model builder. -
Get some insulated single strand wire and strip away the insulation. You now have some real good looking bright silver wire that is perfection for brake and fuel lines. The bonus is you have all the insulation left over which can be used for hoses or spark plug boots. It's cheap too. Hold it! Wasn't that a different thread!

INSPIRED THINKING- Cheap Tips for Frugal Modelers
Modelmartin replied to 62rebel's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I get pints of Acrylic cement from plastics suppliers for about $10. It beats the h*ll out of those little 2 or 3 oz bottles of Cement at the LHS for $3-4.00 each. Don't skimp on paint, however. That is your basic false economy. Costs you in the end because your paint job sucks. I have seen guys do that time and again. -
Using Testors Glosscoat as a sealer
Modelmartin replied to falcongeorge's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I have been using PPG acyrlic lacquer primer on all of my styrene with no problems whatsoever! I used to use Duponrt but they must have changed the formula because it started splitting  when it dried like a "distressed" finish. I changed to PPG and Voila! Perfect results. -
Would that be Rat Donk Rod? Looks like you are having fun with it!

Looking for an Airfix Bentley
Modelmartin replied to modelmaker's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Easily found on Ebay! I look for 1/43rd Lemans Bentleys and see the big Airfix and MPC release of the same kit all the time. I just checked and they are none listed at this moment but you shouldn't have any trouble bagging one. -
painting with epoxy paint?
Modelmartin replied to Harvezter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to use Imron through an airbrush. It was pretty thick and they had a reducer but you could only go about 10%. I had to use the #5 tip on my Paasche , about 40psi and lay one one heavy coat. If you had any dust or orange peel you were out of luck. it was so hard it wouldn't readily polish. Save yourself a lot of heartbreak and use clear lacquer. I eventually regretted :x the day I starting using Imron. The catalyzed stuff is a lot more toxic too. I have never had my clear acrylic lacquer yellow on me. -
Very cool model. 8) I am impressed!

Well, let's see if I can remember them all! 62 Chev 63 Chev (2) 64 Comets 1 white, 1 r,w,blue 65 2 dr post unaltered wb, carbs 65 HT AWB injected, fuel tank in grille 66 Bacaruda! 67 GTX Hemi 4-spd black interior 67 GTX 440 auto. clinic car white interior 68 Cuda SS/B 69 Cuda B/G 68-9 GTX SS 440 6-pac 68-9 Road Runner SS Hemi 70 Cuda pro 70 Duster pro 70 Superbird SS 71 Cuda pro 72 GTX SS 72 Cuda pro 72 Duster pro 73 Colt pro in Sox& Martin colors Omni Pro I do have all of the kits and decals at this point. Some will be full-detail and some like the Comet, Colt and Omni will be curbsides. I will be using newer kit undersides on the older kits like the 68-9 Cudas. I am using the Revell Dart chassis on those. I will pass on the T-Bird, Comet Pro/Mod, and the Truck. I would do the Challenger from the late 70s if I could find a kit of it. I want to concentrate on the heydays of Sox & Martin. Thanks for your photo link. I already had quite a bit of it and I generally don't use restored cars for reference if I can help it. Fortunately I am a car magazine fanatic and my Wall O' Mags had more material than I could use. If you ever need something specific feel free to ask me and I can scan and send! I have a lot of feature articles and many smaller pics in event coverage. Sometimes Sox & Martin showed up with 4 cars at a race! Indy 1970 they had 3 Pro Stocks entered - 69 Cuda, 70 Cuda, and a Duster! At Indy 69 they had 2 69 Cudas ,one in SS/X (trial run for pro/Stock) and one in B/G. I found a reference to them bringing one of the 70 Cudas to an AHRA meet running a single 4 barrel in GT-1 class. They showed up at one NHRA meet in 67 with 3 GTX. Also they just changed trim and some sheet metal to update the cars and it is really hard to track that. It is real obvious when they changed the 70 Cuda to a 71 because at the 1st couple of races in 71 that car had the 6-pack scoop and the same classnumber and stickers in the windows as it ran in late 70. In late 71 they ran 2 71 Cudas with differing scoops. The newer one got changed to a 72 the next year. Then there is the red and chrome bumpers from 70. I picked out a representative sampling of their cars for my project Now that I have posted this thread I am going to have to build some momentum on this project. I will endeavor to keep it going and update it regularly. I shot my first coat of white on the 65 AWB last night. I want to get it done for our GMO/NNL in MPLS in June. Thanks to everybody for looking and commenting.

My obseravtion is that the earlier F&F was OK quality. It could have been better, but wasn't too bad. The quality improved quite a bit over time and the later releases were actually quite good. If you can find them I wouldn't hesitate myself to buy them. I met Ed jr. at NNL East and he is a real nice guy and his work was real nice. I bought 2 kits from him.

That is wild, man! H*ll ya, I will trade some wicker for some fleur de lis upholstery! I built a Coupe Napoleon some years ago but would love a do-over with that upholstery. I went to Mulhouse on my honeymoon 16 years ago. I had to see 100 Bugattis in one place! There were over 400 cars on display including the 2 Royales plus the recreated Esders roadster. 2 words -sensory overload.  I will get a sheet of wicker printed for you and in the mail likely within a week or two. Dan is printing up some of my production stuff this week.

I bought all my Sox & Martin Colors from MCW. They used Ford colors through 65 or 66 and Mopar colors after that. The MCW paint works out great and looks right to me. I have gotten good service from them, too.

Thanks for your comments. To answer several queries at once - The AWB 65 Belvedere is from Good Stuff with a bunch of AMT Road Runner stuffed underneath, I do have the decals for the Ronnie Sox 62 Chev and plan to do that car as well, and the Superbird ran in 70 as a Super Stock and in 71 as a Modified Production . It didn't have the scoop in 70 and that is how I modeled it. I have done a lot of research in my very extensive magazine collection and you can't believe the number of unusual variations I have found and I am sure there are more out there. The 68-69 Cudas ran as everything from a Stocker to Super Stock, Pro Stock, and in 69 as a B/G with an injected hemi and then in 73 or so they narrowed the rearend, put on Cragar Super Tricks, and ran as a SS/A. It's going to be fun.

Lee, I try to find early releases of the Jo-Han kits for actual building. Look for the ones with the Gold Cup logo on them. Time wasn't kind to the tooling and all of those 70s-80s reissues are real flashy. The Cadillac Phaeton has the wrong fenders in it!!! I completely redid the chrome -stripped ,reworked the part and had them replated. It's a bunch of work and some expense but it really makes the model. I have wicker decals!!! Dan of Slippery Arts made them for me and I can get more printed real easy. They are way, way better than the wicker decals in the heller Hispano Suiza. This Mini model is a copy of my Corgi toy I have had since I was a kid!

Very freaking cool model! I saw the Paul Hein models too. They were super detailed like crazy but yours look better. It has more visual"pop". Keep up the great work.

Monogram always used a better grade of styrene so you could polish the plastic like you did. Nice looking car you got there!

One of the members of my club , Chris Vick, has built over 70 Wood Brothers Nascar cars and is still going! He was my inspiration for this project in which I am attempting to build 20 different Sox & Martin cars. Well I have 2 finished and 4 more started. I have all of the kits and decals I need. ( I wish Slixx had gotten the differnt ampersands and gold/silver correct on the logos) Wish me luck! I am going to need it.

Here are a few more!!! Thanks for looking.

Classic Cars, of course being those cars manufactured between 1925 and 1948 as accepted by the CCCA! Here are a few models I have finished. Hope you all enjoyed them. Thanks.

In conclusion: Right! like this will conclude! This has been very entertaining for me too. I have to respectfully disagree with Jairus about the copying issue. In my opinion it is conclusive and widespread. No need for anyone to respond to this because it is my opinion and I really doubt anyone can possibly change my mind on this issue. I realize that Mr. Theune has improved his castings to the point most of his current customers are satisfied. That still leaves customers from the first 2-4?? years who got something inadequate and couldn't get satisfaction. Yah! I heard you - take it like a man! But I am sick of that. Would you take it like a man if the latest new car you bought was a total lemon and then the dealer said it was your fault and then told you to screw yourself. I suspect you would be less than pleased about it. I have got junk resin before but the difference is the persons who produced it were CIVIL about it despite their disappointment and gave me my money back when I POLITELY asked to return the model. I haven't had the experience of buying from Mr. Theune so I am going by the accounts of people I know and trust. If you look at the negative feedbacks he has left for others it is obvious he is less than a gentleman. I am sick of all of the shrill discourse in the country today. I am not shy about mixing things up when there is cause but I try to keep it below the shouting and lying level that is typical of talk radio and cable news! I will even talk politics with you, Jarius, over beers and still be friends after. At least I will do my best to still be friends. The last 25 years has left a trail of carcasses of small resin casters. Mad Dog, Freeman, ABC, Cheez-Cast, Ken Glenn, Fremont, Ron Cash, All-American, and on and on. Who can remember them all! A few of these guys were good businessman, a few were good casters, a few left paid orders unfilled, they all had different reasons for ceasing production, but they were all decent guys for the most part. They produced original work of varying levels of quality from very good to really awful. If Mr. Theune can clean up his act he won't have to join that list. Can a leopard change its spots?

I also have almost all of the CCCA accepted classic cars that have been kitted. I actually have a few built and several more underway. The old J0-HAN kits are some of the most exceptional tooling ever made. I loved building the 540K coupe and have the Special Roadster started. The only correction needed was ride height. The Monogram Duesenberg is also an outstanding kit. It is accurate and builds well and looks great. I have built the Heller Bugatti T50 and while it has very un-detailed wheels the rest of it is nicely done and built well. The Heller 540K? Nearly unbuildable! The shapes are right on but the engineering is, to quote an old Mark Gustafson article, antideluvian! I think that means that it is really screwed up and illogical. I am attempting it however. The miracle of the Mercedes 500-540K kits is that all 6 out there are different! I hope to get all 6 built. I have 2 done and 2 started. Then maybe I can use one to kitbash and semi-scratchbuild a 770K Grosser! The engine is similar as is the suspension and grilleshell. I would model that as the factory finished it before it got delivered to the Nazi party, thank you very much. I will post more pics of my other finished classics soon in the under glass section.
