That might look good next to my blue Peugeot. How tall is your Motobecane? I can go as high as a 24-25 inch seat tube with maybe a 33 to 34 inch standover. Here is a cool website I found one day. Old Ten Speeds

this just made me giggle.,...
Modelmartin replied to jeffb's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is HI-larious! I looked at his other auctions. $488.88 for a S&M Superbird kit? He sells aquarium stuff. He must have stuck his head inside one for too long! -
New Automotive Styling Trend?
Modelmartin replied to Modelmartin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I found a pair of curb feelers at a liquidation place for a buck back in the mid '80s. I put them on my SAAB 95 wagon. Besides being tres stylish they were a lot of fun on the road. I would see how close I could get to hazard warning signs When I finally got close enough one night the thing went "Ka-twing!" Laughed my @ss off all the way home! -
I have a '76 Raleigh Sprite 27 5-speed that my dad bought new and never rode. I have put a few thousand miles on it in the last 5 years. I just picked up an '80s Raleigh Capri 10-speed(made in USA!)that is almost like new. I also have a restoration project - an early '70s Peugeot 10 speed which is very similar to one my dad had in the late '60s. There is no carbon fiber or speed 11 or higher in my garage!! I go nuts on model cars so I don't need to go nuts with bikes. I am old school 10-speed guy through and through. The new high tech stuff is cool but it costs plenty and what the heck, I do it for the excercise and the wind in my hair - what's left of it. In warm weather I ride 3 or 4 times a week from 10-20 miles each time. I am contemplating something longer this summer - i hope to try a 50-60 mile ride on a Saturday or something like that. My previous longest ride is 32 miles. Lance, I ain't but I do ok for a 53 year old model builder!

Those old Hubley kits can look real good with a deft touch. Biggest issue are plastic wire wheels. They look better if they are painted with just the hubcap and a trim ring around the rim plated. I do not know where Hubley got the name Speedline Phaeton. That bodystyle is called a dual-cowl sweep panel phaeton. Most of them were made by Lagrande which was Duesenberg's house brand nameplate. Actual construction might have been by several different coachbuilders including LeBaron. What is interesting is that it is on a long wheelbase chassis. Most Lagrandes were on a short chassis. The Derham Tourster was on a long wheelbase and perhaps they were trying to represent one in this kit. Anyway, I will be looking forward to seeing you finish this one. I love the full classics.

Are Smart Cars too big?
Modelmartin replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The dude in the woodie is almost as big as the bumper car! I like these better! Smart car is WWAAAAAAYYYYY! too big for me! This is very sporty and actually kind of cool! Long roof anyone? Obviously, I borrowed these pics from The Bruce Weiner Microcar museum website. -
I use a liquid glue which I buy in pint cans. It is most commonly used for plexiglass. It is applied with a brush or dabbed on the edge of an X-acto blade and flowed in place. I also use superglue a lot for smaller parts and after parts are painted. They make non-fogging and thicker superglues. I have observed that different people like different brands so you will have to try some to see what you will like. White glue (Elmer's or Crystal Clear which is a model builder's white glue) is great for a lot of things. Tiny trim parts on painted surfaces and photo-etch detail parts can be glued on with clear acrylic or enamel paint. I don't use epoxy much anymore but sometimes you need a structural strength join between dissimilar materials. I like JB weld. You likely would not need that if you are doing out-of-the-box builds. I have not used tube glue since 1980. Seriously!

1/32 scale or 1/24?
Modelmartin replied to Matt Bacon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A kindred soul!!! I have all 12 of the Pyro Brass series and many Airfix, Europe, Revell, and others. The only other scale to have a lot of brass era cars is 1/16th. 1/16 is too big for me. There are only a handful of Brass cars in 1/24-5. AMT had the Thomas (although not stock), MPC has the Stutz Bearcat. Tonka did the 1914 T and the Winton, Hawk had the Hupmobile and Rambler and we are........done. I find it amazing that is all there are and the Tonka and Hawk kits are obscure and hard to find, to boot. Here is my Pyro Stevens Duryea. I reckon so! -
1/32 scale or 1/24?
Modelmartin replied to Matt Bacon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There have been a lot of very interesting and well done 1/32 kits produced over the years. The variety and range of cars replicated is even wider than in 1/24-5. I like 1/32 quite a bit but I would say that one would be very foolish to produce any new tool in 1/32. The market and desire is just not there. -
Very fun and outrageous! I like it. As far as '26 and '27 Ts go, there are the AMT Touring and the Buttera '26 2-door sedan and touring cars which are nearly identical to '27s. The AMT '25 coupe is similar but the trunk area is different.

Group 5 was one of my favorite racing series. I wish something like it would be revived. Maybe I would follow racing again. The DTM is almost like group 5. Here are a few of my builds. Scale designs kit. Gotta love Interscope paint schemes. Cheezy AMT/ERTL/Esci release of japanese kit. Can be made to look OK at a foot or so. I have Tokyo/Marui kit of this car that is way better. Fujimi kit with Studio 27 decals for Emerson Fittipaldi racing in Argentine 1000K. Easy build. Group 5 car racing in last year of group 6. The Kremer 917/81. Love it. Love it. Love it. Heller 917 with scale designs decals in back. More later.

Cheap at twice the price!!! Besides, who else has a McGee quad cam top fuel motor?? Tell me that. I will put mine in a TR7 pro-mod I will be building soon.

Has anybody seen this kit?
Modelmartin replied to droogie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Fair quality. It is buildable but needs a good amount of smoothing, filling , clean-up etc. On a 1-10 scale I would rate it 5. It is a modified re-pop of an old slot car body, I believe. -
Airfix 1/32 VW Beetle, brush painted yellow and loaded with decals!

There I was. There I was. 1968, at the starting line. Northeast Minneapolis. Ready to go. Lost first round. Got a new MPC 1/20 Turbine car kit out of the deal. Still have the awesome helmet, though. I drive past this very spot regularly today.

You GOTTA see this model

It would be great fun to rebuild it the same way but with good paint and craftsmanship! -
Lets see your older kits
Modelmartin replied to gray07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I checked and it is very cool! Thanks for sharing that with us, Dave. It is so very hard to believe that you could possibly be old enough to have been around in the pre-styrene epoch! -
Okey-doke! here it is! Cover and six pages. These are hosted on my Fotki and are 50%. If you want the original full size scans, PM me with your e-mail and I will send them. They are about 700-800K each. I like the opening shot with the nosepiece off and the movie camera mounted on the nose. It seems funny that today some street cars and even front drivers go as fast as this dragster did. The onward march of technology is amazing! Enjoy!

I was thinking of putting a Tamiya Beetle pan under it and building a well-detailed model out of it. I have more ideas and models than lifetimes to do it all in!! -
I will get the article and scan and load it up tonight.
