Let me answer this question first. Here are a couple of pics. of what the door mechanics looks like. I started by cutting the individual doors from the body and then glueing them together to form one door. Next was to glue the tops of the doors back into place and create new door lines that extended into the top of the van. I created two hinges for the sides of the door out of styrene and then a hinge frame out of square evergreen stock. I was then able to drill and tap holes on each side for the 00.90 brass screws to attach the doors to the hinge block. A little shaping for clearance and the doors opened perfectly. By using the brass screws I was able to tighten them just enough to give the right amount of tension to allow the doors to remain open without a door prop.

I made my first trip in 2003. Haven't missed one since. Even though I have since moved from Oregon to Florida I wouldn't even possibly think about ever missing another one.

I'm not too keen on the really large tires and wheels. They look good on some subjects but not this. I am sticking with these. They are the perfect size for this project. Thanks for looking.

So the next area that I decided to work on is the grill area. I started by drilling out the chrome plated headlights to make room for new headlight rings and clear lenses. By the way, this will have working head and taillights. Then I cut out the grill inserts and left the horizontal bars. This area will be replaced with screen mesh. More updates will be coming soon.

When I pulled the kit back out about a month ago I decided that it was time to get back into this one. From there I was able to get the side and rear doors hinged in place and working. The front doors will eventually be hinged suicide style just to change things up a bit.

Here is my next new/old project. I purchased this kit as a partial builtup at a swap meet four or five years ago for a song. That's where the thin coats of red, white and blue came from. As soon as I bought this I tore it apart and then started pondering where to go with it. What I came up with is a mixture of modern and retro custom van ideas. Two years ago I finally pulled it out of the box again and started with a mockup of my ideas. The following pics. are what the body looked like when I bought the kit and how it looks mocked up on the tire and wheel choice, Pegasus Halibrands. Then I started cutting and taped the doors in place as gull wing style to see how it would look. Then the model went back in the box.

Sad News... Bob Paeth
1320wayne replied to cruzn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just got off the phone with Ron Martinolich, president of the SABA club in Portland, and the news has not changed. Unfortunately it's just a matter of time before the good lord takes Bob home. Bob was a pioneer in this hooby, to say the least, and moreover than that he was a great friend and he will be sorely missed by many. I had the rare privilege of knowing Bob firsthand for six years while my wife and I lived in Portland. When we first moved there and became a part of the SABA club I thought it was great to finally meet one of the well known names in modeling history that I had read about for so many years prior. I was like a kid in a candy store. It was like meeting a celebrity. I have many fond memories of the short time that I knew Bob. From the club meetings where everyone loved to pick on him because Bob loved to talk and if he got going on a subject it would be 20 to 30 minutes before he was finished. My first trip to GSL in Salt Lake was spent with Bob, in a car, for twelve hours. You get to know a lot about someone when you spend 12 hours in a car with just the two of you. He was kind enough to introduce me to a number of other greats in the modeling community that I had only read about up until that time. The more I think about it the sadder I get, but I can rejoice in knowing that Bob is going to a far better place. Now if no one minds I would like to share a few pics. of Bob in and around the hobby that he loved so dearly. Bob and Ron with Miss Oregon from the 2007 Portland Roadster show. Bob with his "Klingon Cruiser" award from last years GSL Bob, at one of the club meetings. Bob, I say to you, it was my honor to have known you and I will miss you dearly. Godspeed, my friend. -
Folks, here is a link to my latest photo album showing pictures from this weekend's model contest held at the 2008 Southeast Street Rod Nationals at the state fairgrounds in Tampa, FL. It was a great show overall with a very good turnout of high quality builds. Dirk Joseph took home the big hardware with a Best Detail and Best in Show awards for his 66 Nova street machine. http://public.fotki.com/1320wayne/model_sh...southeast-stre/

2004 Kasey Kahne MOPAR Dodge Intrepid Done!
1320wayne replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in WIP: NASCAR
Excellent job Billy. I've also had this one on the project list for sometime now. I have two sets of decals for this paint scheme. One from Three Amigos, where you have to paint the blue fade and the other is from an unknown source but it has the blue fade built nto the decal like yours. This looks so good I'm going to have to bump this one up on the list. Thanks for posting. -
This is as closs to finishing as I could come. The deadline and moving into a new house came at about the same time. I kept the project out on the workbench as long as I could until I finally had to pack up the workbench.

More engine detail. The engine is now mounted in the chassis with added fuel lines from Pro Tech, the best braided line in the business. The fuel cell, oil dump tubes, spark plug covers and electronic sensor wiring has also been added. At this rate I should meet the deadline. And in this photo here you can see the steering linkage. Although there is no way to show it in a still picture this linkage really works all the way down to the front steering. Stay tuned for the final touches, soon.

Great job, Hondo. Finish looks great. I really like the gold frame rails.

Hey Dave, it's good to see you finally on one of these forums. At least you picked the best one to be a part of. Sure do miss being part of the SABA meetings each month. Hope to see you post more pics. of your work on a regular basis. -
Very sharp Lyle. You don't see them built like that much anymore. Excellent build.

'74 Pro street Road Runner Update 6-22-08
1320wayne replied to Custom Hearse's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Nice looking build you got going there. I like the work on the interior to make everything fit. -
Here are some new updated pics. of my build. I had to strip the paint due to some major cracking issues and start over. The new paint used is Krylon black and True blue gloss. The white is hand painted using a Testors paint marker. The decals are a mixture of decals from different sets including some Nascar, Slixx, and JWTBM sheets. The only thing left is the lightning bolts that will positioned on the roof and the front end. They are being processed onto decal film now and should be ready to go by the end of the week. Then I can get the clear coats added. Stay tuned for more.

I'm glad that someone corrected this and posted the true end date of June 25th. The 7th is out of the question to be complete but the 25th just may be reachable.

There are different techniques but here is what I do to create an opening door that is easily removed at the same time. The pins can be found at a model railroad shop.

Here are more pics. of the progress on my build. Added components to the engine as well as the beginnings of the paint for the body.

Revell is supposed to be releasing a Donk version of the mid 80's Olds somtime this year. I'm not into the Donks but I will have this one for the body myself.
