1950 Oldsmobile Wagon Conversion
Tom Geiger replied to Erik Smith's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Darn! He promised me he wouldn't send you one! Mine also arrived. Do you feel a Dondi / Thomm build off coming on?? -
exhaust help please
Tom Geiger replied to Vdub4air88's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I pretty much make my exhausts like you would in real life. I cut parts to make what I need, and then pin them together, just like you'd clamp real parts. This is the exhaust under my latest Model A rat rod pickup. They exit right in front of the rear wheels. -

Those are very cool. Now you need a class photo of the three of them together! -
Come on Terry! You can do it... which one will be your Christmas Amnesty project?? I just pulled this one down off the shelf, dates back to the pre-digital photo era! It's a replica of a brush painted truck a buddy-o-mine drove back in the day. I fitted the chassis under it for the first time this evening!

I saw Al's Corvair in person on Saturday before he painted it. It looked like the above photo. The original builder did a two tone, a color and bare plastic. The visible plastic toned while paint protected the rest of the plastic resulting in this interesting two tone. I told Al just to put some clear on it! The black looks good Al! -

Another vote for report covers. I did this one years ago. -
I like that a whole lot! It's become more and more difficult to do something completely different with a '32 and you've done it!

We were watching the weather for our model club Holiday Party last Saturday. The news had the 'Storm Of The Century" kind of headlines, but we kept watching and agreed to hold the meeting. We did have food on order too. It started snowing once we were underway, and there wasn't much when we left. So it was good we had the meeting. I did stay at my daughter's house in NJ to avoid driving back to PA though. Sunday morning the roads were completely clear and it was smooth sailing all the way home. My deck doesn't get any sun at all in the back, so I did shovel it off. Right now the remaining wet is now solid ice. And there's snow forecast for rush hour tomorrow morning! Yuk!

John, your plan needs a model room, model car display room and a space for your big screen TV, with a bar!
-
Mark, sorry to hear about your break in. And I know what you mean about the local cops being useless. A few years ago I had a contractor who was working on my house in NJ go bankrupt and walk away. One of his subs came and stole the air conditioner compressor from my back yard. He also crossed the electric wires and fried all the controls on the system. Local suburban cops were called immediately. Neighbor across the street saw it happen and was happy to assist. So we had a theft and vandalism. We knew who did it and had a witness. A gift wrapped solved case. What did the local detectives do? They called the guy and asked him to come in for questioning. He refused. Did they go get him, no. He lived a distance away and they said they couldn't go get him. So the clown got away with it.

3D printing growing as we speak
Tom Geiger replied to bbowser's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Agreed. Think about how few guys have a lathe today. That's probably around the number of guys who will excel at this work and take the plunge to buy their own 3D printer. Heck, there's guys here that don't own a regular printer, and guys in my club who don't have a computer at all! -
How many of you tare down old builds ?

I did the same thing, as I was also living in Europe (Germany) and American kits were scarce and very expensive locally. Oh and a funny story... when we got back to the US in 1972, I went to Two Guys Department Store and almost fainted with the huge display of models. They had a big hobby department. I picked out a bunch of them, figuring right to the money I had on me. I got to the cash register, and didn't understand sales tax since I was 14 and this was my first purchase in the USA. So I was short 50 cents so I had to put a kit back. The counter guy saw how much trouble I was having picking one to leave behind, and I told him this was the first time I could buy models like this in 3 years, so he fished in his pocket and paid the tax for me! Cool. -
Don't remember this one.
Tom Geiger replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've got a full size Chevy of every year in my collection from the early 1950s all the way through 1976 EXCEPT for the '72! I don't know why that one is so tough to find. I do have a resin body and a '73 junker to use for the chassis and under parts. The bumpers and front seat are done by Modelhaus, but nobody makes the interior tub. So I keep on lookin' -
and how did it wind up at your house? Did you do business with the dealer previously and he sent it to your address by mistake? Or was his label torn off on a reused box once sent to you?
-
That looks great! I've been on a bit of a camper theme this year myself! I've never been lucky enough to acquire a Hess Training Van in any condition. I guess I'll need to look harder. There is a resin caster who cast that side door. I don't remember who off the top of my head. Maybe someone here will reply with that info.

I did build a model for a friend many years ago. He had a 1968 Lemans convertible with GTO trim on it that he had to get rid of, so I built it for him for his birthday. He was very excited to receive it, but didn't seem to understand the significance of keeping it in the clear case in a safe place. He gave it to his kids who destroyed it in very short order. -
Look What I Got! Say that aloud in my house and TJ the dog will jump up from a dead sleep.... I hit a couple hobby shops in the last 2 days. Replenished some supplies. Got Tamiya Putty, never had it before but saw it on the shelf. Bought these to experiment on creating a platform / diorama to take my model photos. And I had never seen these before so I had to get 'em. G-scale / 1/24 scale building supplies. One is corrugated siding / roofing and the other is scale brick. There are two 7.5" x 12" sheets in a pack for $5.

Wow Ron! I have your car's brother! I also have a nice '61 or '62, the one that has the option to build either a hardtop or convertible. The only issue is that someone drilled holes down the center of the hood, right on a body crease. So I need a scrap body with a good rear hood. -
Here's mine, apparently an original Chopper! Great tool. I paid like $50 for this and have never regretted it a minute. It gives a perfect square cut every time. I've cut wood, plastic strips and even small parts. Just keep your fingers away. You'll see blood before you feel it. Ask me how I know. I've taped pieces of basswood or plastic strips together to get perfectly matching pieces. I've also taped down a stop for the same reason. A valuable tool.

and my favorites are the furniture rental centers like Rent A Center. Can't imagine renting furniture. They have a showroom full of cheap cardboard furniture and off brand TVs and sell them for absurd payments. And those Buy Here - Pay Here car dealers. They get the worse high mile used cars and sell them for enormous amounts based on a weekly payment. They keep a set of keys for the car and put Lojacks in them so they can easily repo them when the loser misses a single payment. -

The government just shut down that Western Sky company that has an Indian woman pitching absurd loans on bad cable TV channels. They claimed they were exempt from US law because they operated from an Indian reservation. I just love this quote, “A two-week balloon loan priced at 400 percent is just inherently unsuitable for people who are in the red every month with their basic expenses,” And yes there are enough stupid / desperate people out there to keep these companies in business. http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-08-26/business/41456387_1_western-sky-financial-payday-lenders-loans -
I took my Geo Tracker to a shop for exhaust many years ago. It was a few days before I realized that they were sloppy in putting the exhaust pipe through the bumper and it melted it a bit. I took it back to them to fix, and when I went to pick it up they tried to present me with a bill for the adjustment. Yea right! They were lucky I didn't want a new back bumper from them!
