Round Styrene Width HELP
Tom Geiger replied to Takymoto's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Or for guys who avoid math at all costs, get yourself a 1/24 or 1/25 scale ruler. The one shown above is a 1/25 scale ruler that I use every day when I work on my stuff. It's absolutely necessary if you do a lot of scratch building. Note that the side I'm showing on it is all inches. I never deal in feet, inches are easier to deal with. So it's easy as taking a tape measure to your car and measuring a dimension as 38", then doing the same with the scale ruler. One final tip- I keep a photo copy of that ruler in my wallet. So when I'm out in real life and I see something I think is in scale, I just measure it. I can't tell you how many times people figures looked 1/25 to me but scaled out to be 7 foot tall kids! -
sleeper question

You want to buy Evergreen plain sheet stock from your hobby shop. It comes in 6" x 12" sheets, 3 to a pack for about $4 for the last one I bought. The thicknesses go from .010", which is like paper, and I'd recommend using the .030" for sides, roof etc. and maybe the .040" for the base. I used .020" for the front and back of my camper and it is a bit light and flexes, which you don't want! -
Traditional '33 Ford Hot Rod with 'Nailhead' Buick Power

Nice build. I have no quarrel with diecast. It's just more choices to build from. And once you've worked your magic on it, nobody can dispute that it is indeed a model! -
Looks like he opened the doors with the old AutoWorld panel cutter tool!

True story and I got to hear it first hand from Bob himself at the GSL in 2001. The pic above is me, Bob Paeth and Tom Daniel in 2003.

Love your '34! I have one on the bench too!
-
Latest photo of my workbench. You can see my camper project on the bench prior to it's painting so this must be maybe 2 months ago. Bench is a hollow core door wrapped in brown paper sitting on two old night stands. Blue boxes are from Swifters and hold my unfinished projects. I lucked into a real Knoll office chair. A company was moving out of a building and threw out a mess of these. I took the four best ones I could find. Two in each mine and my wife's hobby rooms

'50 Olds fastback...any market?
Tom Geiger replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I believe Tom Cooledge of Promolite has one ready to go. I know he's already sent out the sedan with the longer roof. -
Looking at those photos I'd expect that it actually works! Superb job

Love the Rustang! Here's one I've been working on for years. Started as a mint kit, with intent of making exactly what you see here. I was working from photos of a 1:1 that looked exactly like this!

Revell 1957 Chevrolet 150 Utility Sedan - Finished!
Tom Geiger replied to RandyB.'s topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yes! She's lookin' good! I've been looking to create a business coupe base car as a Gas / Electric Company meter reader's car in honor of my late Uncle Dan, who died last year at 91. The only job he ever had was working for Public Service Gas company as a meter reader. Did it for some 40 years before retiring. I originally thought about doing so with the new '57 Ford kit, but I'd have to delete the seat and buy a resin six for it. I have the plastic 6 for the '57 Chevy, no problem. As you can see, I have the decals all figured out. -
Richard, that Heller Mercedes is very cool! I have yet to see one close enough to buy it! I also like the Heller Citroen truck series. I believe I have one of each of those.

Nice work. I like the crackle on the nose. There are those of us who intentionally build beat old weathered models I've had the opposite happen to me. I was building an old Dodge van that was going to be dull and look like a brush paint job. I used Duplicolor and it came out amazingly perfect. Oh crud! I weathered it anyway since the body already had rust holes.

Great build, but you do realize that you have totally voided any warranty on that kit! -

Question about where to post.
Tom Geiger replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Jacen, this is downright funny.... I never said that there shouldn't be rules, only that the headline was a bit heavy handed and the topic only stated rules, but nothing to help the users! Read the rest. I haven't criticized, only have given constructive input as to things that could be added (by the moderators who have said they understand it all, or anyone else who would volunteer) I guess it's a secret then! A post that explains the plateaus is seriously missing. What's wrong with people knowing that when they hit, say 100 posts, their rank will change? It has to be written into the site for the terms to be posted so why not share it with the users? For every one of us who has half figured it out, several have given up and left the board. Why not just create a post that explains it and give everyone the knowledge? Heck, if you know it all, why not write the post yourself? Again, a simple few lines in a posted topic will cover it for all! No problem at all! If a few simple tutorials were written and put into the top topic, it would help the board immensely! A bit of information would help them 'police' the board, making that job easier. I'm not saying to change the format, I'm merely asking that it be explained so all can understand it! -

Prenuptial agreement! Make 'em sign that you get to keep your model car collection. And yer pickup. Or.. just keep on hiding in your folk's basement and talk to your model cars while wearing your Star Trek jammies. Then the wife thing is just a mute point! -
Hi Tom! Great to see you on the board. I will be watching your build! I have bought 2 of the '57 Ford so far, so I really need to build one.

Am I the first to lose a model?
Tom Geiger replied to sportandmiah's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been married what will be 32 years as of this coming May! Yes we went though our bumps in the road and came out together. Raised two great kids that are now financially independent and on their own. I am relaxed in my own home and relationship, no need to watch my back. Pretty sure this will be my life til I die... unless I do something incredibly stupid! -
Question about where to post.
Tom Geiger replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry are you that out of touch with your users? I'm pretty computer literate. I write fortran and hmtl faster than most folks can type. I have managed computer issues for Fortune 100 companies. And here's what I see as a few very simple issues... First, I have a major problem that the first topic under General is "Read The Rules First". Isn't that a bit heavy handed and intimidating? Maybe "How To Navigate The Board" would be more appropriate. Oh, yes! There is no instruction under the topic now! Only rules and threats! So.... What is missing is the navigation primer. Yes, a lot of it is IP Board's software, but you moderators can add posts that would explain stuff here! For instance, very basic. Every user is given a rank. Where is this explained? I haven't found it. I took a quick look through a few posts. For example I have found people called "member" with 10 posts. I see "regular" with 40 posts. "Friend" with 150 posts, I saw someone with 311 posts called an "Avid Poster" and I guess the top rating is "MCW Ohana" which I only know it means family because Greg said that in his editorial in a recent magazine issue. Why isn't there an explanation of the ranks and the plateaus anywhere on the site? Next... simple navigation. I posted previously that even as someone fairly well versed in the web, it took me a while to figure out that if I clicked on the topic, it took me to post 1, but if I clicked on the little dot or star, it would take me to the first unread post. I still haven't figure out the difference between the dot and the star. Why isn't there an explanation on the site? Next... I saw someone post today that they wanted to modify the title of a thread they had started. A moderator responded and explained how it was done which is fine, but why isn't that in a tutorial? I know I stumbled on to it myself. But how many people on this board haven't been savvy enough to figure it out on their own? Simply put, there's a lot of positive things that the moderation team, that has the knowledge, could help the members with that would help their user experience! -
Question about where to post.
Tom Geiger replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Simply stating standard Business 101. The goal of any business is to make sales and please the customers. You cannot disagree with that. This board is total expense and generates no income. It's only purpose is to make the users happy enough to patronize the magazine. -

Easy. A very insecure woman sees any interest you have as competition. A smart woman understands that your art is one of the things that makes you interesting and complete! -
Stainless Steel versus Chrome Trim
Tom Geiger replied to Alfa158's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'd recommend eBay Motors as a good research site. Some sellers post 50 or more photos of a car for sale, and those photos will show the detail you are asking about. I commend you for your quest for accuracy. In 'chrome tones' there is actual chrome, stainless and pot metal.. as well as plastic chrome on later cars. All have their own distinct level of shine. Many modelers don't get that and clear coat over everything, giving their entire model a two dimensional look. To understand and create those tones is what brings a model to life!
