Next project?
lapazleo replied to bandit1's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Great idea for a project. International Transport had many interesting trucks leased to them I'm surprised there haven't been more models. Wheels of time magazine from the American truck historical society did an article with many great pictures but I can't remember what month. A google search should nail it down. Looking forward to pictures. -
Help with Dodge Big Horn
lapazleo replied to Dodge BigHorn's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
It appears to be the Resin Motor Replicas version. Not a bad replica but not right either. The cab is very close but the hood is way off. Nothing that can't be corrected though. Normally comes with cab floor and door panels and correct fuel tanks. Diamond reo tanks are close. Looking forward to seeing pics. -

I agree the diamond reo is the best kit to use even the sleeper would be accurate. -
Help with Dodge Big Horn

Cummins NTC 290,NTC 350 or Detroit Diesel 8V71N or 8V71T very common. Spicer 16 speed such as AMT,s road boss or Diamond Reo kits, 10 or 13 speed fuller transmissions. US sold bighorns had reyco 4 spring rear suspensions, Canadian sold bighorns usually had hendrickson walking beams. Western stabilaire air ride was an option it's identical to the early Peterbilt air ride like AMt,s Pete 352 or California hauler . But the only Bighorn factory equiped with it was the prototype by the way still in existence and being fully restored. The old dodges.com website will give you all you could ever want to know about bighorns. -
Flat-top LoneStar?
lapazleo replied to Fabrux's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
If you notice there's a raised ridge on top very much like the flat top pro sleeper on the 9000 series trucks also this bunk is shorter as it is meant for regional and weight sensative applications. -
Flat-top LoneStar?

Then put a nice Moebius Great Dane reefer coverted to spread axle behind it. Ah just got an idea for one of my Lonestars. -

Flat-top LoneStar?

Look up the 56" flat top sleeper option for the Prostar on truckpaper.com as the Prostar uses the same basic cab. It is a single flat top bunk but at this time it is not an option on the Lonestar. Would make a neat what if project though. -
I've always found the clear acetate in various thicknesses with the Evergreen/Plastruct display at my local h/s. It's fairly cheap pocket change.

my latest lonestar/fruehauf combo
lapazleo replied to Chad's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Nice build, There are many sharp great lakes specials in my neck of the woods. You got that one dead on. -
Yes the Lonestar kit has an autoshift. Eaton Fuller autoshifts have 3 pedals, Eaton Fuller ultrashifts have 2 pedals as do Meritor freedomline transmissions. The shift controls are located to the left of the cup holder. The top of the transmission has the servo controls located on it. To make it a full manual trans just grab a shifter and tranny top plate from the ole parts box and remove the shift control detail from the lower dash and replace it with another cup holder. Again thnx Dave and Moebius.

The Maxxforce 13 is a MAN/Navistar design MAN is Navistar's European partner they have built trucks in Austria for decades. Maxxforce 15 is based on the Cat c15 block. Navistar made a deal with Cat to produce vocational trucks for sale under the Cat name in exchange for the c15. The trucks being built for Cat are basicly Navistar Paystar 5000's. A model of the Cat vocational truck would be a good subject for a new model hint hint.

Agreed Dave, that had a lot to do with European manufacter's making their own drive trains for years. With all these ridiculous emission requirements engineering costs eliminate the ability of manufacter's to offer infinite options like they did in the past. The days of getting any truck with any engine are over. Any way keep up the good work and keep em coming.

It appears to be a Scania v8 (Swedish) 1/24 scale Italeri Scania truck kit -
After building virtually every model truck marketed in the last 40+ years I've yet to find one that didn't have some issues. The Mobieus Lonestar is a fine kit and I salute Dave and Moebius for taking a chance on it.I do however consider it to be a medium to difficult skill level kit. I suggest taking your time and being patient and any one can achieve a satisfactory result. I have found sometimes after 40+ years of model building you just have to put it back on the shelf and walk away or do something else for a while. The same problems some found in building the Lonestar you find in all kits be they AMT,Ertl,Revell or Italari. I find problem solving is much a part of modeling as creativity, painting etc. As far as the arguement about different types of modeling each one has challenges it depends on what you like. I've tried cars, planes milatary etc.they all have their own quirks. I build trucks because that's what I like.

Revell made the 1/48 scale one in various versions also Ulrich makes one in 1/87 scale they were part of Walthers model railroad company. Ulrich has a web site you can google.
