I've found the various opinions you guys have about the SA site to be pretty interesting. Here's my take, as honest and unbiased as I can be, based on my experiences there as an active member for 5 years, with around 7,000 posts total, before giving up and coming here: Their site seems to be populated more by beginners and kids. Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with beginners and kids, that's who's keeping the hobby alive. But you'll generally see less advanced builders and models there, and more basic sort of stuff, both in terms of models posted and questions asked. That's not to say that there aren't some pretty talented people there... there are, and in fact a lot of the guys here also post there regularly. But the ratio of beginners and kids to advanced/experienced modelers is about 75%/25%. Second, they run a very tight ship. No avatars allowed, absolutely no mentioning other sites or forums, and absolutely nothing "off topic". You won't ever see a thread about pets or getting laid off or anything like that there. Any posts that are the least bit off topic are deleted immediately (or as soon as an admin sees it). If you don't mind some very specific and strictly enforced rules, you'll be fine... but if you like things a little loose and laid back, they are not the place for you. Third... no ROM! Fourth: Three photos per post maximum, and they DO enforce this by deleting any photos over three in you post. However, you can post three photos, then post three more in a second post, then post three more in a third post, etc., which seems to make the three photos per post rule a little strange... Their site has a different vibe than this one, that's for sure. I'm not saying that it's worse, just different. They are a corporation-run site, we are a Gregg-run site. The only way to see whether or not you'd like it there is to give it a try. But I'd be willing to bet that most people who have gotten used to how we run things here wouldn't like how things are done over there. Try it, judge for yourself. We'll see you back here...

Question about scale
Harry P. replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you have a 17" diameter wheel in real life, in 1/24 scale (1/24th the size of the original), it would be .708" in diameter. In 1/25 scale (1/25th the size of the original), it would be .680" in diameter. A 6' tall man, in 1/24 scale, would be 3" tall, and in 1/25 scale would be 2.88" tall, a difference of .12", or a bit more than 1/10th of an inch. And since people aren't all exactly 6 feet tall, the difference is totally insignificant. I don't think it's worth your time worrying about differences that small. Nobody would ever be able to tell that a 1/24 scale model car next to a 1/25 scale person don't match up, scalewise. -
$11 including shipping??? How can you go wrong? Nice model, nice car, great price!

A few more photos...

Here's an example of the difference between that site and this one.. If you were to post a topic over there asking about the Model Cars site, your post would be immediately deleted. Period.

"Tyres"? Are you from the British part of Florida?

Pretty close vote... I managed to fool a lot of you, but most of you got it right. It's REAL! Next ROM coming MONDAY!

Pic's of your Pet's
Harry P. replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Actually the guys who've said that this isn't the place to post photos of your cats and dogs are right... this isn't the place for that. Animal lovers or not, this is a model cars site. I'm sure there are plenty of pet forums out there that would welcome photos of your pets. And there are scrapbooking forums for scrapbookers, and stamp forums for stamp collectors, etc. Personally I have more interests than just model cars... but I don't post anything about my other hobbies here because this isn't the place for it. There's no harm in posting the occasional off topic subject, as long as it's at least sort of related to cars somehow... and I'll admit I'd be the first to click on it and read it... but let's cool it with the Fluffy and Fido photos for now. All your pet pix are cute as heck, but can we get back on topic now? -

Good Photography
Harry P. replied to 09WNS/14BRK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No need to apologize, Clay. Your kids are cute... I'm sure you're very proud of them. Personally, I love the "social" side of posting. In fact, I'd LOVE to post all sorts of things here, on all sorts of topics. Believe me, I have no shortage of opinions on a lot of topics! Don't get me started! But since this is the online version of Model Cars Magazine, we really should try and keep things centered on model cars. More or less. Most of the time. -
Good Photography
Harry P. replied to 09WNS/14BRK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ok, guys... I don't want to be the cranky guy with the hose who chases the kids off his lawn... but this post says "Good photography...no models, please"! We've been getting some weird posts lately... show us your cats, show us your babies... none of which have anything to do with what this place is supposed to be about. I really don't want to be the bad guy here, but can we please try to stay at least vaguely on topic? -
A lackluster shine??? I hope you don't really mean that...

Why 3 rear-view mirrors?

Very cute kids! I love the last picture...

I can't find any other round door car. But I did find this... the car before it was restored: -

"Grokable" kits
Harry P. replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow... that's a whole lotta $$$ for a kit you're only going to "look at" and possibly never build! Hey, when you're done looking at it, send it to me...I'll build it! -
New stuff from Modelhaus
Harry P. replied to Tom Kren's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
The DeSoto wagon is a complete (curbside) kit. -
I have a pretty simple rule: If the detail is so small that you can't see it without a magnifier and a strong light, I don't bother!!! I'm working on a 1/72 scale WWI bomber. Each Rolls Royce engine (there's two) is approx. 1/2" long! And each engine has over 30 parts!!! Needless to say, I'm never buying such a small scale kit ever again!

That's some big-time engineering on those doors! Seeing that got me thinking... wouldn't it be nice if car doors opened like minivan doors...sliding straight back instead of swinging out. Of course, on a 4-door you'd have to have some sort of system where the rear doors couldn't be opened while the fronts are open, but that would be easy enough to engineer. Just think... no more parking lot door dings!
