Yes, you can get a nice paint job by brushing, but you would need experience doing it to get an acceptable result. Seeing as how you describe yourself as a beginner, I'd say pick a color that's available in a spray can and go that route. By the way, I moved your topic. It has nothing to do with model kit reviews, which is where you posted it.

1/24th-1/25th scale, why is it a big deal
Harry P. replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ah, but the flaw in your logic is that you assume that there are far more buyers who "care" about scale and will pass on a 1/24 kit than there are buyers who have no problem with a kit being in 1/24 scale... so you assume that to appease the greatest number of buyers and maximize sales, the kit must be done in 1/25. That's a pretty broad assumption. Just what sort of hard-number, real-world data do you base your assumption on? What market research are you privy to that the rest of us don't know about? And don't point to the reaction here in this thread as "proof" that most builders want 1/25 over 1/24, because the sample here is hardly large enough to even remotely qualify as statistically valid and representative of the "average" kit builder worldwide. -
1/24th-1/25th scale, why is it a big deal
Harry P. replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Man, you sure are fussy! On my shelves I have 1/8 scale cars next to 1/24 cars next to 1/9 bikes next to 1/32 WWI fighter planes next to 1/6 and 1/4 scale engines, etc., etc. Mix and match! No scale bigotry on my shelves... all models and all scales welcome. -
That's amazing! The head and tail lights look very realistic. What's the source for them?

1/24th-1/25th scale, why is it a big deal
Harry P. replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have models in all scales, from HO to 1/4 and everything in between. And yeah, I display them all side by side. Differences in scale and model size have never bothered me one bit, I look at each model as an individual. But that's just me. I can see where someone who builds only in one particular scale and displays all the models side by side would want to stick with that scale. But only building in one scale sure limits the range of kits out there that are "acceptable" to you. Me, I buy a kit if I'm interested in the subject, the scale isn't really an issue with me. -
Revell '50 Oldsmobile Club Coupe 2'n1
Harry P. replied to styromaniac's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The reason I posted the comments from my "anonymous source" was to give everyone some solid, first-hand insight into how and why Revell made their decisions regarding this kit. There was too much speculation going on in this thread, with people forming opinions based on what they guessed Revell's thinking was! It's fine to second-guess Revell's decision and hash it out on the forum, but if you're going to chime in, at least be aware of the facts before you form an opinion. (And when I say "you" I'm not referring to you personally, Casey, but to everyone in general). -

I agree. Good to see that Moebius has the "big guys" thinking... -

What I want to know is... when is the new "Green Acres" movie coming out? Alec Baldwin as Mr. Douglas, Arianna Huffington as Lisa, Jim Carrey as Eb, and Steve Carell as Mr. Haney... -

How do you do a parody of a parody? The original series wasn't exactly a serious dramatic work. -

I can't believe we're still talking about DOH in 2012. -
Those are all very clean and nicely built!

Cool! I didn't know this kit existed! Also a huge Beatles fan, so this should be good! -
To get back to Cranky's original question... there are far better options out there to use as a basis for building a realistic gasser. The "Badman" is what it is... basically a cartoon. Yes, it's easy to build, but as far as a good starting point to building a realistic gasser? Um… no.

It looks good! As far as any problems, I can tell you for sure that no Model T ever offered white upholstery! And depending on the model year, I think the radiator shell and headlight buckets would have been nickel plated. But a nice model for sure! The wood plank bed floor is a nice touch.

Revell '50 Oldsmobile Club Coupe 2'n1
Harry P. replied to styromaniac's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I have some information from a very reliable source regarding this kit. My source prefers to remain anonymous, but I can guarantee you that he is a very big name in the hobby and has connections to other big names in the hobby and the kit manufacturing industry. (And no, my source is not Art Anderson! ) Anyway, here are his comments, edited slightly just to keep things short and sweet. What this guy has to say, I can guarantee that you can take it to the bank. The truth of the matter is that the '50 Olds has been on Revell's long-range list for years. What finally put it over the top was the Moebius Hudson Hornet kit. Some of us pointed out that many folks building a NASCAR Hornet would very much like to build a NASCAR Olds to display alongside it. Senior VP Roger Harney's first car as a teen was a '50 Olds. The mere mention of a '50 Olds kit brought a broad smile to RH's face. The Hudson vs Olds thing finally did it. During lengthy preliminary discussions surrounding what body style to do the first version of the kit in, the one thing that we kept coming back to was that overwhelmingly the most popular body style of this car was, and continues to be, the coupe. It was sort of a poorman's Holiday. The other thing that we kept coming back to was that nearly all of the NASCAR and drag '50 Oldsmobiles were coupes with one exception-the Herschel McGriff sedan, which not only won the very first La Panamericana race but old HM drove the car up to Darlington and finished seventh, I think, in the very first Southern 500. Maybe to some of the pea brains none of this is significant but for many of us with deep roots and long standing interests in vintage motorsports there couldn't be a race car with more charisma and historic significance. The problem then became, does Revell do the first version as a sedan to satisfy the folks wanting a dead-on accurate sedan to do the McGriff car? Or a coupe with the possibility of dozens of spin-offs? The decision was finally made that Revell would take the heat to do the markings for one of the most famous American race cars with historic legacy. The other move was to provide Tom Coolidge (one of the most knowledgeable early Olds experts) with two of the first final test shots. I can tell you that Tom Coolidge does plan to do the resin sedan conversion as soon as he can lay his hands on a production '50 Olds kit. So there you go. Some solid, reliable info not based on speculation but first-hand knowledge. -
Just curious... but if it's a snap kit why are you using glue? Isn't the whole point of a snap kit that it doesn't need glue?
-
It's meant for kids. Totally inaccurate in almost every way. Typical Monogram Tom Daniel "toy" model kit.

Revell '50 Oldsmobile Club Coupe 2'n1
Harry P. replied to styromaniac's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Interesting thread we have going here. A lot of good points have been made, and as usual all opinions are welcome and equally valid. However, some of you are speculating here and forming your opinions based on guessing what Revell was thinking. A little speculation is harmless enough, but remember that forming an opinion based on incomplete information can result in a very misguided opinion! Just a little reality check, I guess... don't be too quick to make a final judgement until you have all the facts in hand.
