The parochial schools have to hit the parents with tuition and fees... property taxes don't cover them, they only cover public schools. So it's not like the parochial schools are fleecing the parents, it's more like doing what they have to do to survive. And they're really not surviving. Here several are closed every year due to declining enrollments plus increased costs. There are only a fraction still operating compared to 50 years ago. You have to heat the building and keep the lights on whether you have 500 kids or 100 kids going to a particular school, so as enrollment continues to drop in the Catholic schools (mostly due to demographic changes), their only choice is either charge the parents more, or shut the doors. And the parents who are still sending their kids to Catholic schools are hit twice... school tuition, plus they still have to pay property tax to support the public schools, even though their kids are not in the public schools.
