Good luck to our northern neighbors
Harry P. replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's what 22" of snow looks like... This is Lake Shore Drive looking south during the morning rush hour (Lake Michigan is on the left). If you look closely you'll see how remarkably light the traffic is... in fact you'll notice there are no cars! That's because they shut down LSD yesterday and I think it's still closed now. -

Do you realize that the money made by the magazine pays for this forum? In other words... no magazine, no forum. -

It looks like somebody had it in for Chicago... looks like we are the absolute center of the worst of the snow... http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/?n=snow_amt_fcst -

Traffic on Lake Shore Drive was at a standstill... people were sitting in traffic for hours, and everyone started running out of gas, so they started abandoning their cars and walking! So they closed Lake Shore Dive altogether so they can plow it. But how are they going to plow it with dozens of abandoned cars on it? -

As lame as it sounds, that exact "word" was used in the paper today! -

The simple answer is: we can only run the stuff that we receive! MCM doesn't have "staff writers;" we don't assign anyone a particular topic to write about.... almost all of the articles and features (besides the regular monthly columns–Trucks, Collector's Corner, Resin, etc.) come from you guys–the readers! And it's the people who are submitting the material that are deciding on what topic they want to write about. I can't run pro-mod features unless pro-mod features are submitted! -

Well.. the end of the world has begun here. It's 4 pm and it's snowing like crazy, wind is blowing like crazy and I can barely see the house across the street. And it's supposed to get WORSE here after 9PM and snow 3-4 inches per hour until morning! Let's see... 9PM to 5AM = 8 hours x 3-4 inches/hour = 24-32 inches by tomorrow morning if the forecast is right! Yikes... -

Driving around in that thing must look awfully silly in May, June, July, August, September, October... -

You guys do realize that most people who live in Chicago don't drive a huge pickup truck with a snowplow attached... don't you? -

The funny thing is, around here it snows in winter. Always has, always will. It's a given, a fact of life. But the TV news robots make such a big deal out of it... "SNOW ALERT!!!" "STORMWATCH 2011!!!" "BLIZZARD OF THE CENTURY!!!" I swear, the way they are reporting this thing (which hasn't even happened yet!) you'd think we're all going to die tomorrow... -

They forecast between 12 and 20 inches here. If it happens it would be the single biggest snowfall in the Chicago area since 1999. The all-time record single-storm total was 23 inches in 1967. That snowfall literally shut the city down for a week. People just abandoned their cars in the street (you couldn't do much else... no way you can drive in a foot of snow!) Here are a couple of shots from the 1967 blizzard: I was at the grocery store today and the place was mobbed! The way people are stocking up, you'd think the world was going to end tomorrow... -

Model Cars Magazine #154
Harry P. replied to TOYCARTEC's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Exactly. Bagging each issue would mean, first of all, buying the machinery to do so! And we're talking big money. So of course it's much cheaper for the magazine to offer free replacement copies every now and then to those who ask, than to bag every single issue up front. I don't know enough about the actual shipping/sorting/mailing process to give you a good reason why MCM seems to get mangled more than other magazines do. If anyone out there has actual, hands-on knowledge of how or why this keeps happening (any USPS employees out there?), please let us know. -

If you know of a way to run content that every single reader is 100% interested in every single issue, please let us know. That would sure be a neat trick. -
If the gap is too wide you'll have to build up the edges of the hood with strips of styrene. The best way to glue the hood is with liquid styrene cement. You hold the hood in place and brush some liquid cement into the joint from the backside. No messy glue squishing out. Liquid cement is a much better way to go than tube glue for just about all applications.

As far as MCM arriving damaged. that is in no way the fault of the magazine! I guarantee you the magazines leave the printer in perfect condition. What happens to them after they leave the printer and enter the USPS system is not the fault of the magazine! However, even though the magazine can't control the shipping/mailing process, they will replace any issue that arrives damaged. All you have to do is call them (the number is on the masthead) and they'll mail you a replacement copy, no charge–even though it's not their fault! The lateness thing... well, that's a whole 'nother story... -
