After chopping a car, what about the glass!?
Ramfins59 replied to pancake's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You might be able to trim off the same amount of clear plastic from the bottom of the glass, as you cut when you did the chop. It should fit pretty well after that. Just be sure to use your razor saw when cutting the clear plastic or you will wind up cracking it... -
This is a wooden Box Scooter that I built many years ago using model railroad lumber. As I remember, for the one that I built when I was a kid (12 or 13...???) I used a wooden box, a couple of pieces of 2x4, a roller skate and some frame pieces from an old baby carriage... (for handles and exhaust pipes) I put Maxwell House coffee can lids on the front for "headlights" and painted flames on it... I used to fly down a hill on 183rd Street in the Bronx, NY on this thing... Not so fast going back up the hill but man was it fun... I think my influences from all the parts in the model kits at the time (60's) made me do the real thing up the way I did. Nothin like childhood memories...

NNL East. Just eight weeks to go.
Ramfins59 replied to Modlguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Barring any unforseen circumstances I DO believe that I will be there... I'm looking forward to another GREAT Show and to seeing so many great modeling friends again (and maybe making some more new ones). I know I'll be visiting a few of the AWESOME vendors and will be going home with some great buys, some priceless memories and hopefully a lot of inspiration for my next builds. -
Can't you just raid the parts box... or borrow a set of whitewalls from another kit... ?? (Assuming of course, that you have a spare parts box and other kits to borrow from...)

Hello from a new old modeler

Welcome to the Forum Randy. I love your "55-56-57 "El Camino" builds. -
Let's see your geegaws!
Ramfins59 replied to Lunajammer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This almost makes me want to go looking through all my kits to gather together all this different, cool stuff together. Geeze... just thinking now about all the different things that I can remember seeing in the kits that I have, and, the stuff that I've already put aside for various reasons I know I've got a lot of cool stuff. I'm sure a lot of us could do the same... But I'm not suggesting that we do that... Really guys... I'm NOT suggesting that... -
Andy, like all the other models that you have shown us... This is gorgeous. Excellent job.

Question for Gregg or Harry...
Ramfins59 replied to Ramfins59's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry and Gregg, I thank you for your explanations. Gregg, I'm sorry to hear that we won't be seeing you at NNL EAST this year. I sincerely hope that somehow or other your back problems get to be less of an issue for you. By the way Gregg, the picture shown (X-RAY)... are those the pins or screws in your back...??? Please stay well my friend. -
Question for Gregg or Harry...
Ramfins59 replied to Ramfins59's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, I'm really not trying to be "picky" here, and I'm certainly NOT trying to stir up any pots or cause any controversy, but... wouldn't it be better to see pics of a show as HUGE as the NNL EAST sooner than a year after it...?? I know... I know... Magazine formats & schedules are made up long in advance, etc., etc... I'm just sayin'... I know that I will surely get my subscription issue for the Feb/March Contest Issue AFTER the 2012 NNL EAST show is over...!!! -
Question for Gregg or Harry...
Ramfins59 posted a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I know that the NNL East 2012 is coming up in a couple of months... and I will definitely be there... I'm just wondering when and if we will ever see MCM pictures of the NNL East from 2011...??? Will they eventually show up in a future Contest coverage issue...??? -
I agree.

Your build looks sweet... and yeah, IMHO go with the semi-gloss black engine bay.

CMA models - Video
Ramfins59 replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had the pleasure of working for Marshall Buck for a few months back in 2001, when I still lived on Long Island, NY. He is a fantastic craftsman and good person. I was still recuperating from the TIA's (small strokes) that I had in June 2000 and I was doing office work for his business rather than building models, as my eyesight and eye-hand coordination was still not up to par as yet. I still run into him at the NNL East sometimes. As he states in the video, model-making is a tough business and from what I have seen while working for him, it is a tough business to make $$$ in. While to all of us it IS a hobby, when your livlihood depends on it, it becomes a job, and to me, that would seem to take a lot of the FUN out of building a model. -
What's up with no posting?
Ramfins59 replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Who really knows why Posts have fallen off. Maybe life is just getting in the way for a lot of us. Or, maybe a lot of us have found other things to do than sit in front of a computer screen all day. I for one have been involved in building a new project ('53 Ford Pickup - Mild Custom) and as soon as I have enough of it done to show, I'll post some WIP pics. I think the moderators do a good job trying to "keep the peace" here, but I do believe that they really shouldn't have to work so hard to try to do that because, as adults, those of us who post stuff on this Forum, should have the common sense to NOT play childish games like name-calling, pot stirring, bullying, egging-on and making sarcastic comments. This Forum is here for the enjoyment and furthering of our Hobby, not for childish antics, one-upsmanship and mind games. As far as reading the posts here, I always hit the New Content when I come on. I'm really not interested in re-reading or re-viewing stuff I've already seen. Just my 2 cents worth... Opinions & butt-holes... We've ALL got 'em... -
You've got some options, depending on which way you want to go. You can scratchbuild your own lenses from the red sprue in some kits, depending on the size of the bullet lens you want to make. Some filing, sanding and polishing can get you a decent looking lens. You can rob lenses from other kits, or, you can post what you need in the "WANTED" section here on this Forum. You can also search EBAY for anyone selling the old taillight lens Parts Packs. Finally, you can search the vendors at shows in your area for parts or cheap, old builtups that may have the lenses you are looking for.

I'm retired so I pretty much do whatever I want, whenever I want. I get into modeling "ruts" now and then, but don't we all..?? When I'm not in a "rut" I usually spend at least a couple of hours a day working on a project. I tune in to Speed Channel and Velocity to see if anything good is on that I haven't yet seen (for possible inspiration). I check in on this Forum a couple of times a day, usually mid afternoon and just before bedtime.

Besides the pin vise and assortment of drill sizes, I'd say you'd need an Exacto Knife with a supply of # 11 blades, a razor saw, at least one good pair of pointed tweezers, a set of Riffler files, some coarse, medium, fine & extra fine sanding sticks or pads, liquid styrene glue (Tenax or Ambroid) CA or superglue, white glue, an assortment of good paint brushes, a pair of sprue cutters, a small scissor... I know that's more than 10, but we're talking the basics here... You could also use some alligator clips or some spring loaded clothes pins for clamps. That should get you going...

Drilling a very small hole in sprue
Ramfins59 replied to vintagestang's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You need to use a Pin Vise with at least a # 70 bit. Go slowly and as straight as you can. You can only go as far as the drill bit is long though. -
Great job as usual Andy. I love your work.

GAH! I just can't do it.
Ramfins59 replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to try to "discipline" myself to do at least one Box Stock model every year, just to keep my detail painting skills up to par. I've only entered 2 of them in Contests though. I got one First Place and one Third Place award. However, I, like almost everyone else here, find it extremely difficult, if not darn near impossible, to not add or change SOMETHING. Engine compartments look so bare without wiring and interiors just don't look right without some extra detailing like at least flocking... and lots of times you've just got to change the wheels and/or tires. I would say that it's been at least 10 years or longer since I've built a Box Stock model though. Maybe one of these days I'll give it another try... Maybe... One of these days...
