  1. I'll put my 2 cents in on this... Yes I'd love to see parts on the chrome tree where the attachment point is NOT in a spot where you'll have to touch it up with paint or foil after trimming or sanding. Also, I'd like to see molds designed like some of the Tamiya kits where the mold lines on the bodies are NOT in really obvious places... Have the mold lines be along the trim lines or the edge of the body and not running across the fenders and trunks. I understand the limits of moldmaking, but if some of the foreign companies can do it, why can't they ALL do it..?? I'd also like to see the glass in kits not being a one piece affair. Make separate pieces for the front and rear windows so that ugly runner/connector piece doesn't run across the headliner. I know some of the newer kits have separate front & rear glass, but can't they do it on ALL kits.
  2. Sounds like to sprayed too heavy of a wet coat. Was it enamel or lacquer paint? Depending on how thick the runs are, you may be able to sand it down but you'll most likely have to respray it anyway after sanding it. I'd just go ahead and strip it and respray it.
  3. I spoke to Norm Veber by email today when trying to pre-order some stuff that I want to pick up from him at the NNL East. Norm said that while he WILL be at the NNL, he unfortunately will NOT be vending there this year because he is trying to catch up on all the orders he is running behind on. At the moment he said he is trying to fill all his January orders... I'm sure A LOT OF PEOPLE will be disappointed to hear this news, as I was. Norm is well, just very, very busy and is trying to catch up. So I guess anyone who has sent him orders recently should just be a little more patient as Norm is doing his best to get everything filled as quickly as he can.
  4. I've used the White Lightning color once and I must have had too heavy a hand and the paint ran badly. Also I sprayed it over Duplicolor gray primer and wasn't happy with the final product. After three trips into the stripper I gave up on it and the model ('50 Ford Conv. Custom) is back in the box until I feel like tackling it again... I find that you really have to spray light, mist coats with these One Coat paints or they will run badly on you. I've used the Blazing Black and the Inca Gold also with good results. I really don't think they are ONE COAT paints because you really have to apply them in light coats to build up coverage, but maybe it's just me...
  5. Thanks for the birthday wishes guys. I'll be posting some WIP pics of the pickup soon. I still have to make an exhaust system, add heater hoses, make inner door panels, smooth out and finish the bed cover, and, of course, paint the body. The chassis, engine and interior pieces are pretty much done, as is some minor bodywork and sanding. As I said previously, I originally wasn't going to go nuts with details on this build, but, you know how that goes... especially with Harry sitting on your shoulder...!!!
  6. Yeah I built one of these a long time ago too. I also wouldn't mind having another one.
  7. All my unbuilt kits are in year order, except for the odd size boxes (like the Galaxie kits & Revell 49 Merc, etc.) My built kits are also in glass display cabinets in year order.
  8. Welcome to this Forum Ray. Quite a lot of us are "old farts" also (I'll be 65 tomorrow) and I remember the hobby just as you do way back when... It's a great time to be a modeler now with all the advances and new stuff and improved kits that are available to us. We all learn new stuff with each new day and hopefully each model we build gets a little better.
  9. Nice job Sam. I wish I could find another one of these kits... Better yet, I wish Revell would put out an updated Phaeton kit to go along with all the other '32 kits they've done...
  10. I've been keeping my decals is a large, ziplock freezer bag. It has kept them all dry and in great shape.
  11. I was born and raised in NYC and moved to Long Island in the mid '70's. Growing up I remember seeing what I guess you would call the East Coast Customs. I still like what is called the J.C.Whitney or Bolt-On customizing on the 50's cars... Lake pipes, spinners, dummy spots, twin antennas, skirts, Connie Kits, bullet taillights, etc... all the "doodads...
  12. I figure that I know I have more kits in my stash that I will ever build in my life, even though I keep buying the new issues that interest me (like the '48 Ford, '49 Merc, '53 Hudson, '55 Chrysler (which I will buy at NNL East) & Revell '58 Impala). For the past 5 years I've been buying the new kits online as the prices are cheaper than the LHS prices when buying multiple kits, even with shipping I also am well stocked on PE and aftermarket stuff to last me for awhile. I am planning on spending a bunch of bucks at the NNL East for some resin stuff from RMCoMD & The Modelhaus and probably some paints. The NNL East is really the one time each year that I go nuts buying stuff. During the rest of the year I usually only spend at the LHS for XActo blades, jar paints and glues.
  13. OK... Either you just got home with that new kit you've been dying to get, or, it just got delivered to your front door. Do you just plunk it on top of the pile of other unbuilt kits in your stash..? Or, do you rip open the shrink wrap and inspect the body, the parts, the chrome tree and the instructions..?? Do you leave the shrink wrap on the kit box until you pick it to work on..?? It always amazes me how many people will jump right on building a brand new kit as soon as they get their hands on it. I, personally, will not drop what I am or have been working on to start on that new kit, but I am most likely in the minority on this issue. What do YOU do...???
  14. I only have 2 magazine subscriptions right now... Model Cars and Scale Auto.. I've had SA since the early 90's and Model Cars since waaaaay back at the end of when it was Plastic Fanatic. I used to subscribe to Custom Rodder and Street Rodder but they both just turned me off because in comparison to the car pictures and features they became more of just advertisement catalogs. When I wound up at a well stocked magazine rack, or at Barnes & Noble I would drop a BIG chunk of $$$ picking up Kar Kulture Deluxe, Ol' Skool Rods, Hot Rod Deluxe, Hemmings Classic Car, Collectable Auto and sometimes Lowrider... I'd then go home and sit for hours reading all of them and cutting out pictures of cars that turned me on for ideas to build models of them. Then after reading them all, I'd kick myself for spending (wasting..??) such a huge wad of cash for a bunch of magazines that really didn't do anything for me in the long run.
  15. Depending on the kit, I'll buy at least 2 of them if I REALLY like the kit, and usually I'll build one, and rob parts from the other for different builds. For instance, the Revell chopped '49 Merc kit... I haven't built one yet (because everyone else IS... I like to wait a good length of time for the hoopla to be done for that kit), but I've robbed parts for other builds from the 2nd kit (engine, chromed reversed wheels & tires, tooth grille). I'll most likely do the same thing with the new chopped '48 Ford kit. I do however have at least a dozen or more kits in my stash that make me scratch my head. ... why did I buy them?
  16. The body is great for making a chopped sedan street rod, but you'll have to deal with those fiddly door hinges. I used brass doll-house hinges when I made my version of Hell Rod, using this body.
  17. C'mon Bob... You know you can do your own chop...!!!
  18. I don't think it'll take that long...
  19. Uh Oh... Here we go with more drama... How long before this thread gets Locked...?
  20. I was advised on this board that it will be out sometime in March/April.
  21. Yes Tim, that is the kit that I have. I bought it many years ago, not knowing it was a multi-piece body. I also have a Revell Jaguar XKE kit , and a '48 Lincoln kit that also have the multi-piece bodies. Every time I look thru these kits, thinking that maybe I'll try building them, I just get turned off by the multi-piece assemblies.
  22. Instead of listening to the radio, I turn on "Music Choice" on my local cable TV service and listen to either the Blues or Classic Rock. Occasionally I'll put some Eric Clapton CD's on. I also enjoy it being quiet when I'm building, when no one else is home, and I sometimes don't put any music or TV on.
  23. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I wish you a speedy and uneventful recovery. Broken bones are no fun at all. Hopefully you will get a lot of modeling done while you are reasonably immobile. Good luck.
  24. I see some cool abandoned and/or dilapidated buildings in and around the Pittsburgh area, and some old cars just rusting away here and there... I just never seem to have my digital camera with me when I see that stuff. When my wife & I go out, or are traveling somewhere, I never really think about keeping my camera in the car with me.
  25. When I got my '59 Dodge Coronet back in October '96 (I've since sold it) it had one outside mirror mounted on the fender on the driver's side. I couldn't see diddly in that mirror from the driver's seat, (of course I am nearsighted) so I moved the mirror to the driver's door, plus I added one on the passenger side door. Then I could see just fine. Also, it took awhile to get used to the dashboard mounted inside rear view mirror.
