"Net zero" carbon emissions is attainable with applied existing technology, but "zero carbon emissions" is a fool's fever-dream...because every time you breathe out (along with avery other animal on the planet) you exhale carbon dioxide.

Question/New Topic for us Oldtimers
Ace-Garageguy replied to TransAmMike's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I feel for ya. I have a fair bit of chronic pain from old injuries and creeping decrepitude too, and sometimes the early morning and the last hour or two in the shop every day can be...less than pleasant. But I've found over several years that 1) getting down to and maintaining a reasonable weight, 2) "working through" the pain with ibuprofen as required, and 3) frequent strenuous exercise (and stretching to maintain range-of-motion) absolutely positively reduces the stiffness, aching joints, back, and need for pain meds over time. It hurts to exercise when you hurt, but after a while...for me at least...the pain retreats to the point where it's not the defining characteristic of every activity. Sometimes I can go for several days without ibuprofen. Thing is...as soon as I slow down or take it easy for too long, I start going bad again...kinda like leaving an old car sitting out in the weather. Things just rust up, stick, and stop working. Then, every time it takes longer and longer to get back to the point where I can function the way I want to. Just a thought. Your mileage may vary. -

Question/New Topic for us Oldtimers
Ace-Garageguy replied to TransAmMike's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I'm pretty ancient, but working almost full time years after "retirement" and getting moved to my place in Az. takes up all the time I'd otherwise have to build models right now. My recreation these days consists mostly of hiking at a nearby national park to de-stress, and I credit that and continuing to do physical work for my remaining in relatively good shape despite the miles that are on me. I have a lifetime's worth of full-scale project cars to keep me busy in Az. after the move is done, and a nice shop out there to work in, plus a separate model shop. And the place is close to mountains to hike and camp in, Lake Mead, the Colorado River and boating, and pretty much everything else I love about outdoor life. So if I live long enough to enjoy it all, I'll never get bored. I just wish I'd known at 18 what I know now about people and expectations and opportunity and disappointment and resilience and self-reliance and taking personal responsibility for one's own actions and standing up for what's right no matter what and all that other "boring" stuff. -

What Did You Get Today? (Not Model Related)

'96 S10 Blazer like this. 4-dr, slushbox, 2WD. One-family owned since new, all professional car people. High mileage but well maintained, clean, never wrecked. I'd sworn "NO MORE CARS!!!" But my daily GMC pickup is getting really tired, and I need something useful to drive while I put the new engine in her. The little Blazer got a new engine about 50,000 miles back, a heater core, a radiator, and all new balljoints and bushings in the front end. Drives like a new one but has minor cosmetic issues. Did I mention the owners were cool-car guys who take care of their stuff? There is, frankly, nothing worth rolling the dice on available used in this market for what I paid. Nothing. -

Extra big fun to see this thing come together. -
"Minted" has absolutely nothing to do with "minty", but around 50% of eBayers seem to be blissfully unaware of the meaning of either word.

STP stickers on your windows used to be good for at least 5 horsepower each.

Only "difficult" part about painting anything black...model or real...is that it shows every flaw in the bodywork or prep.

"Else" and "anymore" are examples of words that simply can't be used to start grammatically correct sentences, but seein' as how anyone who respects correct grammar these days is derided, illiteracy affecting internet communication abounds.

Badly built gloobombs are satisfying (to some) to rebuild into nice models.

Ummmm...it's ludicrous. "Ludacris" is a rapper.

Got out in the woods fairly early today, hiked more than 5 miles. Feel great now. Beautiful day but almost 90F by the time I finished. Need to take more water next time. One quart's just not enough.

"Artists" who nail rotting bananas to the wall or smear dog poo on plates are widely celebrated by the oh-so-much-more-hip-than-you crowd, but produce something of real beauty and be prepared to be ridiculed and laughed at for being "derivative" and "unoriginal".

More is always better and "less is more" so less must be better and it follows from that that nothing must be best.

Times I can't count that the autocorrect is just flat wrong, or the splellchick flags something wrong that's actually correct (like the spellcheck here had never heard of "theirs"), so I assume the spllillchighk software is written by common-core grads now...the ones who don't know any words and stuff.

"Your's" is an incorrect spelling of "yours" because it's akin to the other possessive pronouns mine, his, hers, and theirs...none of which use an apostrophe to signify possession. https://prowritingaid.com/yours-vs-your-s
