  2. You missed my point entirely. I know what the engines are. My comment was about Ulf's model engine and his placement of the exhaust stacks. I was responding to the comment you made about the comment I made about his having the stacks in the wrong place. I was wrong about Ulf's engine. You corrected me. You and Ulf's engine were correct. The configurations of the Chevy L6 and the bigger GMC BLOCKS are close enough to make a point about the location of the side covers on the block, relative to the top of the block...which is what I did. Does that make sense??

  5. Yup, you are correct, as is Ulf. I stupidly commented prior to looking at where the block side covers are relative to the top of the block, and I mistakenly took the white material immediately under the chrome on Ulf's model engine to be the "lower half of the two-piece valve cover". Where he has the finned side-covers is indeed adjacent to the top of the block, so the next element up on one of these engines, no matter what head is on it, would be the cylinder head.

  8. It's good to be prudent, but kit styrene is usually stable up to just under the temperature of boiling water, call it 200F. What warps a model sitting near a window is the lensing effect of sunlight striking a transparent material at an angle that somehow focuses its rays on a small area. First time it happened to me I was about 14, and for some reason left a built model in the convertible-top-well of my parents' car. It simply never occurred to me that a flexible plastic window could focus the sun's rays like a magnifying glass, but the warped mess I retrieved pretty well proved it. Car interiors can get up to 160F or more, but that's not usually enough to cause kit styrene to warp unless there's something exerting constant pressure on it while it's hot. There's no question it was focused sunlight that locally heated the plastic of the model to the point it just sagged. A model in direct sunlight outside should be perfectly fine.
  9. That's what makes it so frustrating. Sometimes they do a great glitch-free job. It obviously has to do with the competence and conscientiousness of the employees working on any given day in any given facility. I've never managed a business with far-flung "human resources" and frankly, I have no idea how you get consistent competence and conscientiousness nationwide. EDIT: But I kinda believe figuring that out really ought to be upper management's primary objective.   10. Great news. I have all of 'em I really need except the notchback, but if they come back, I'll probably buy more of the rest too. There's so much you can do with these... EDIT: Asking for the notchback coupe is anywhere from about $100 to $250, so it'll be great to have lower cost options again. And this time, I'll buy a few before they're all gone.
  11. Using colored clear plastic sheet to replace windows usually produces the best results. It's easy if the "glass" in question is not compound-curved.

  19. AMT '59 Ford Galaxie hardtop, well-built from a kit...NOT a warped, shrunken acetate promo. Yellowed overall as they do, just missing the front fender-top chrome inserts with the "gunsights". Whoever detail-painted the interior and chrome trim (only on one side) did such a nice job, I kinda hate to mess with it. And only about 12.5% of the asking for one NIB on feePay.

  21. Graffiti or "tagging" sprayed all over everything that doesn't move for a few minutes is really getting old, and I see it as vandalism, not "art".
  22. On paper, DeJoy looked like a good choice for the position, as he had extensive prior experience in "logistics" as a postal-system subcontractor. In practice...apparently not so much.

This guy services a lot of older interesting stuff, and routinely comes up against the same problems I do: predominantly poor or no parts availability, and things that have been previously bodged while being "worked on". This particular car, a 30+ year-old V12 Jag, is a complex vehicle, somewhat challenging to maintain and repair. Like all older cars, it requires patience, deep knowledge of vehicle operation and systems in general, and targeted knowledge about the specific vehicle (or factory manuals and the ability to read and understand technical info and follow directions). HOWEVER...though these Jags and other early emissions-era vehicles can be complicated, they're not burdened by a lot of add-on electronics running everything. Understanding of the engine management systems and their diagnosis and repair is all the black-magic required. The rest of it, though there's a lot, is straightforward and logical to anyone who has any business "working on cars". Those contemplating buying an older "collector" car, especially if you can't or don't want to do your own work, should watch this video.
