Sidney Schwartz Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 (edited) I've finally worked up the courage to post some pics. Please keep in mind that this is my first serious attempt. Kit is the Monogram #2291. Turned out to be an interesting choice for for my first try, as it has a number of problems. Had I know before hand I would not have bought it, but it's been good experience for me. Below are pics of the many seam lines I had to remove. If you check the pics of the painted body further on, I think I managed to do a fair job smoothing them down. The headlight housing fit was also quite poor but I was able to get a lot of improvement there. So far I'm mostly pleased with the way it's going. I'm way more confident now that I've been able to solved a number of problems. Edited April 19, 2015 by Sidney Schwartz
Sidney Schwartz Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 This is my second attempt at painting the body. I think I just overdid it the first time around. The paint is satin finish with a couple of coats of Future. It still has to be polished and waxed. I'm just guessing at how much clear coat it has to have before polishing. The fender script and most other details have been smoothed down and will be replaced with PE details. I plan to use metal foil for the side trim.
Sidney Schwartz Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 (edited) Engine and chassis mostly assembled. The distributor and plug wires on this engine are concealed, which is fine with me. The red battery cable is attached to the starter. I'll be making radiator hoses, the fuel lines and throttle cables. The top surface of the head was far from level and had to be scraped and sanded quite a bit before the valve cover would fit correctly. I also modified the water pump outlet so it would point in the right direction for the hose. I had to replace part of the exhaust as the muffler was contacting the drive shaft. Sidney Schwartz Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 Interior is completed except for final assembly. The dash is probably the part I was dreading the most, having been traumatized by them as a kid. It came out much better than I'd hoped, thanks to the PE details and printed gauges I bought.
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Nice work. That body has some serious mold-registration issues, and it looks like you've done a fine job correcting them...far better than some folks who've been doing this a long time. Way to go.
Sidney Schwartz Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 The final engine part to be done is the triple carb/intake assembly. I tried using bare beading wire to fabricate the fuel lines but couldn't get it to stay glued to the assembly. Using styrene rod worked much better, though it won't have that nice metal finish that wire does. The fuel line will be routed around the front of the engine and attached to the fuel pump. The triple throttle cables with be mesh covered like the real ones.
Sidney Schwartz Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 (edited) Thanks, Bill. Nice to hear I'm on the right track. Ha ha! Just realized I posted this in the wrong section. Sorry. I'd appreciate it if one of the forum moderators could move it. Also forgot to mention that a few of the chrome parts had chrome missing in spots. Edited April 19, 2015 by Sidney Schwartz
Sidney Schwartz Posted April 24, 2015 Author Posted April 24, 2015 The air cleaner/carb/intake manifold has been the trickiest part so far, but it's almost finished. The fuel line was fabbed from styrene rod and the throttle cables from braided beading wire. I had to try several combinations of materials and glue before I could get everything to stick. I especially wanted to be able to include the throttle cables since they're a very distinctive feature of this engine. The fuel line needs to be routed around the engine and into the fuel pump. The throttle cables will be trimmed and glued to the firewall at final assembly.
Sidney Schwartz Posted May 9, 2015 Author Posted May 9, 2015 I was impatient and didn't allow the clear coat to dry completely enough before adding another coat. The result is some fine cracks. In spite of that I'm giving it a Not Bad. The panel lines are also not quite what I was hoping for...the color is uneven. Oh well. On to the BMF.
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Looking pretty good Sidney! Just for future reference, try using a slightly darker paint than the body color for your panel lines. Black, or any dark color, on a light colored body is a bit too stark. Steve
Sidney Schwartz Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 Good idea, Steve. I ended up stripping it so I'll have a chance to try doing the panel lines again.
johnbuzzed Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 If I were you, I would be happy and proud of my work. That is looking real nice.
misterNNL Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 This is looking very nice.By the way I really like hat you're wearing in your profile photo.

Luis Ayala Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Great Job, specially with a kit that has so much body work. Thanks for sharing !!!
Sidney Schwartz Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 Thanks all for the encouragement. Much appreciated! I'm getting dangerously close to finishing this thing...I went out today and got the paint for the next kit. Don't want to risk going to long without a plastic fix. Body has been repainted and finished. No cracks in the clear coat this time. PE and BMF applied. This was my first crack at BMF, so the results are not great, but not terrible I hope. I need to attach the windshield and the other chrome stuff, and then it's final assembly time.
Sidney Schwartz Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 You'll notice I didn't get real close with the camera.
Tom Geiger Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) This is looking very nice.By the way I really like hat you're wearing in your profile photo. I believe that's a JC Whitney hood ornament on top of that helmet! Maybe the wings light up? Edited May 13, 2015 by Tom Geiger
Maindrian Pace Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Very nice work. Ages ago, I built the metal body version of this kit. -MJS
Sidney Schwartz Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 I believe that's a JC Whitney hood ornament on top of that helmet! Maybe the wings light up? Ha! Yes, it plugs into the cigarette lighter. Works as a turn signal, too. Good old JC Whitney. They seemed to have dropped a lot of that cool stuff from their line.
Sidney Schwartz Posted May 15, 2015 Author Posted May 15, 2015 Finished! See pics in the Under Glass section.
