I was paging thru some of my old car mags and ran across a cool 36 Ford drawn for the "off the sketch pad" in a June 1961 Rod Custom.

I was a bit surprised that the artists name was never mentioned. Any body have any info on the artists off the past that made sketches for the Car mags ?

Tom Daniel did a LOT of sketches in early/mid-'60s R&Cs. Some of it was quite nice, too, unlike the goofymobiles he designed for Monogram a decade later.

Goofymobiles. The perfect word for them...

I've been thumbing through some of those '65-'68 Rod & Custom issues lately; I think some of them do include Tom Daniel's name on the cover. He wasn't well-known before the connection with Monogram, but he did do quite a bit of work for R&C. It might have been the Sketchpad work that brought him to the attention of someone at Monogram.

If you look at some of the wilder Sketchpad stuff he did (like the T-bucket article), you can see traces of ideas he would work into the Monogram show rods later on. I didn't care for the Monogram stuff when I was a kid, but I've got a few of them now.

Some of Daniel's Sketchpad articles involved model kits. In one of the early articles, he reworked the L'il Coffin. I'm pretty sure he did a few cutaway drawings too.

Yup. One obvious example is the Badman's 396 graphic/stripe was first seen on sketches for a '62 Chevy.

Only the Editing staff, advertising and ad production were listed .

The cover and bottom part of the first 8 pages are missing . There may be some credit information on the bottom of page 5 but I don't have it,

Was just looking at some early '60s Car Crafts, which also had a sketchpad. These were by a William Moore.

I think William Moore also did some of the early Rod & Custom Sketchpads also. Moore also did some cutaway drawings, probably for both titles also. Both he and Tom Daniel probably did the "breakdown sketches" for those articles where they showed you how to build a model of one of the feature cars in a particular R&C issue. Between all of it, there are tons of model building possibilities for not only the reissued kits and parts packs, but a lot of the kits brought out in recent years.

IIRC, Joe Henning did many, if not most of those so-called "Breakdown Sketches" in both R&C, and Rod & Custom Models--he was a model builder back in the day.

Tom Daniel was also responsible for the 65/66 era Chevy truck hood design.

I was always a Tom Daniel fan back when I was a kid. I had his kits, Pie Wagon, Beer Wagon, TJ Taxi, T'rantula and wanted the rest of the series. Little did I know I'd meet him one day. GSL 2003, I was fortunate enough to not only meet him, I got to have a beer with TD.

That's me (back when I had hair), Bob Paeth and Tom Daniel. I call this photo, "The Day My Planets Were In Perfect Alignment". I not only was into TD kits as a kid, but my nemesis kit was the Revell '57 Nomad. Bob Paeth was responsible for that kit, and spent some time telling me all about the development of it. So here I am with the two guys who influenced my modeling as a kid... and the funny part was that they had never met before this photo
