Joe Handley Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Man, I am learning so much about songs that I never knew! I had no idea that "Burning Love" was a cover. Elvis is another artist that sang other people's songs, many of which were covers. Poke around on YouTube enough, just searching out his song names, and you'll see what I mean.
charlie8575 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 (edited) Apparently, Todd Rundgren was the first to record "Love Is the Answer," not England Dan and John Ford Coley. I found this out a couple of months back. I like Todd's version a lot. Charlie Larkin Edited May 12, 2015 by charlie8575
Snake45 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Grand Funk had a big hit with "The Loco-motion"... But it wasn't their song,... I don't think that one qualifies for this thread...everybody always knew that one was a cover of an oldie. And a decade later, a way hot Australian named Kylie Minogue had a hit with it again.
lysleder Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 "I'm a rebel"was written for and recorded by AC/DC in 1976, but never released. Accept recorded the song in 1979, releasing it in 1980 as a single as well as the opening track for their second album,I'm a Rebel. Does that qualify?
lysleder Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 I'm pretty sure you know this one.. ..but do you know this one?
Mike_G Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Grand Funk had a big hit with "The Loco-motion"... But it wasn't their song,... The Loco-motion was written by Carole King and her husband (whose name escapes me at the moment)- Little Eva was their babysitter.

my66s55 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 How many of you knew that the big Nazareth hit "Love Hurts" from the '70s was a cover of an old Everly Bros. song? Interestingly enough, the version by the Everly's was an add on in an alblum. The 1961 version by Roy Orbison climbed to # 5 on the Australian charts.
my66s55 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Talk to me. A song first sung by by Little Willie John in 1958, hit the charts again in the 1963 version by Sunny and the Sunglows. There are a multitude of covers for this song.
my66s55 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 For all you Happy Day's fans. The song Blueberry Hill was originally written in 1940 and recorded 6 times. The largest selling version was by Glen Miller.
Harry P. Posted May 12, 2015 Author Posted May 12, 2015 I don't think that one qualifies for this thread...everybody always knew that one was a cover of an oldie. I bet there are people here that had no idea that it was a cover.
Harry P. Posted May 12, 2015 Author Posted May 12, 2015 The Loco-motion was written by Carole King and her husband (whose name escapes me at the moment)- Little Eva was their babysitter. I didn't know that Little Eva was their babysitter! I am learning all kinds of stuff here! BTW... Carole King's husband/songwriting partner was Gerry Goffin. He died last year. Carole, however, is still going strong,
Petetrucker07 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 James Taylor recorded You've Got A Friend just after Carole King did. But his version won all the awards and accolades. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xEkIou3WFnM
drball Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 BTW... Carole King's husband/songwriting partner was Gerry Goffin. He died last year. Carole, however, is still going strong, They were part of the Brill Building writing teams that worked for Don Kirschner's publishing on tin pan alley.
Snake45 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 ...Don Kirschner... To this day, I can't hear that name without thinking of Paul Shaffer's hilarious impression of him on SNL back in the '80s.

slusher Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Elvis is another artist that sang other people's songs, many of which were covers. Poke around on YouTube enough, just searching out his song names, and you'll see what I mean. I know Elvis had a hit with Kentucky Rain that was wrote by Eddie Rabbit and Elvis had a hit with Guitar Man wrote by Jerry Reed but Elvis did a better job singing both songs then the writers and Eddie Rabbit was a really good singer...
madhorseman Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Todd's big 1972 hit.... Originally a song by the Nazz

Say whatever else you want about him, but Elvis was a really, really good singer. And I'm not even a particular Elvis fan.
landman Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 A couple that I have posted in the covers thread, but they belong here too. Hound Dog by Elvis was actually recorded first by Big Mama Thornton. And Janis Joplin's big hit was first done by Erma Franklin (Aretha's big Sister) Erma wasn't as well known as Aretha, or Janis for that ,matter, but she sang a smoking version of Piece Of My Heart. Okay. I won't recycle any more, but Hound Dog really deserved to be in this thread, and I could listen to Erma Franklin's rendition of Piece Of My Heart all day. And Janis' Ball &Chain was Big Mama Thornton's too.
