magicmustang Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 (edited) Here's one I've been wanting to build for many years. It's a phantom take of Hugh Tucker's winningest AA/SR from 1965. I could not find a model of a 1928 Chevy roadster so I went with a 1929 Ford roadster body, interior and hood. Did find a '34 Ford frame and '32 Ford grill / shell as he used on the real car. Went with the blown Olds engine as he used in '65. Rear push bar, roll bar, headers and straight front axle are scratch built. All other parts are from the spare parts boxes. Am waiting on a set of decals from Ed at Drag City Castings to complete. Let me know what you think. Edited May 28, 2015 by magicmustang
wayne swayze Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Looks like a good replication to my eye. If you were familiar with the real car, you'd sure recognize it in your model!
vintagedragcrazy Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Awsome build Gerald I have the resin body and decals that Ed makes and it's on my list someday along with the silencer 37 chevy body he makes in fact I have a bunch of eds stuff some of the best out there as far as I'm concerned and he's also a great guy. oldscool Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Looks great! I remember an article in Rod and Custom back in the 60's showing how to kitbash parts to model this car.
1320wayne Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 If this is the same car then here are a couple of pics that I took at the Portland Roadster Show back in 2005.
magicmustang Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 Yep, that is the restored version as it was run in 1967. Had a hemi engine then instead of the Olds.
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 I recently had lunch with Hugh and what a fun time we had. Lots of great stories and a super nice guy. He took me over to his house and showed me his museum of artifacts covering the walls. Here's the car in the garage. Nice to see you building this and it's looking great!!!! Looking forward to the finished car..
magicmustang Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) Decals arrived. Had to modify some as I am trying to replicate his car as it was in 1965. He made many changes in '64 and '65 so this is a guess based on pics. Let me know what you think. Edited May 26, 2015 by magicmustang
tim boyd Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Gerald...great choice for a scale replica, and a most excellent job recreating it, too! Thanks for sharing....TIM
MAGIC MUFFLER Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 You've got my thumbs up!!!!! Hugh will be proud...
ZTony8 Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 If you ever do another version there's a diecast '28 Chevy out there you can use for the body.
magicmustang Posted June 1, 2015 Author Posted June 1, 2015 Thanks, but diecasts are usually 1/24th scale and it's hard to kit bash with 1/25th scale parts. It just would not look right. I'll stay with what I did. I did call it a phantom take.
TooOld Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Oh yeah , that's cool ! And it looks even better with the decals on it , nice work .
Church Key Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Do you have any detail shots of the scratch built front axle? I have not seen any accurate straight axles in kit form. I would like some ideas for building one myself.
