JohnnyK Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I recently finished the 1/12 Ford GT 40 MK II. I spent more on aftermarket parts than the model cost. But Hey, That's part of the fun. I need a recommendation for a 1/12 Formula1 car. Thanks.
Roncla Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 If your pockets are really deep the 1/12 Model Factory Hiro kits are considered to be about as good as it gets. You couldn't go wrong with any of Tamiyas 1/12 range of F1 cars. They start with the 60s Lotus and Honda and end with the 90s Williams They have been around for years and are still the benchmark for 1/12 plastic
jaymcminn Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 +1 on the Tamiya f1 cars. I recently built the Lotus 72d and it was an excellent kit.
Belugawrx Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Yep the Tamiya F1 kits are great... Haven't tried the MFH kits, but have seen them being built on another site. Seems like a lot of dough though. Good luck in your search! Cheers
JohnnyK Posted June 8, 2015 Author Posted June 8, 2015 Anyone here build the recent Tamiya Lotus Type 49?
Roncla Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Anyone here build the recent Tamiya Lotus Type 49? I built one back when it was first released umteen decades ago and have just got the latest release. Its a straight forward kit that doesn't show its age.
Nacho Z Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I can vouch for the Tamiya '78 Lotus kit. Plenty of detail in the kit and plenty more opportunity to detail it out.
JohnnyK Posted July 24, 2015 Author Posted July 24, 2015 Well, I just bought the Lotus Type 49. This a weird kit because it has the vestiges of a battery compartment on the bottom of the body! Gap filling super glue to the rescue.
Dave Van Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 (edited) Any Tamiyas 1/12 kit........I like the Wolf and other 70's era cars myself......Tyrell a bit more challenging (6 wheeler) Edited July 24, 2015 by Dave Van
Twokidsnosleep Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 (edited) I have the 1/12 Tamiya wR1 Wolf and the Ferrari T4 in the stash pile as well as a pile of the 1/20'sThe Lotus will be great, do a WIP thread so can follow alongLovin the Gt40....that one is high on my want list, but very rare Cheers Edited July 24, 2015 by Twokidsnosleep
sjordan2 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I'd go for one with a story of interest to me, like a car driven by a world champion like Clark, Schumacher, Senna, etc.
Twokidsnosleep Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I'd go for one with a story of interest to me, like a car driven by a world champion like Clark, Schumacher, Senna, etc. Good advice, something I do with every kit I buy....it has some meaning or connection for me Hi Skip

Since it was OOP for a few years, and very difficult to find, she paid $200 for the kit!!!! It takes a lot of work to make it not look like a toy. You can see photos of the GT 40 here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/103425-just-finished-trumpeter-112-ford-gt40-mk-ii/
Twokidsnosleep Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I saw that thread John, you did a super job on itI imagine there are licensing reasons that a 1/12 GT40 isn't made again. Now that I have snagged my 1/8 Bugatti, the GT 40 is on my hit list....hopefully one day I will get one
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I think the issue wasn't licisensing but how poorly the kit sold. As was commented it is a difficult kit to not look toy like. At one point Scale Motorsports was going to do a full detail set for the kit but then scrapped the idea becjase of how poorly the kit was done. I've always liked the gt40 and would have loved to get the kit but was disappointed by the poor rdviews.
JohnnyK Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 There are some problems with the kit. The car sits too high, the seats are wrong, the carb is wrong, the tires look bad and there are too many chromed parts. However, the overall shape of the model looks correct and the exhaust pipis are right on. With some work the model looks really good. Isn't that why we induldge in thois hobby? We enjoy a challenge.
Roncla Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 Hobby Search is showing the 1/12 GT 40 is being reissued in late Sept.http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10098338

JohnnyK Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 I went to the GT 40 website and looked at the photos of the parts. I remember when I opened the box two years ago, and it is a really big box, I freaked out over the large number of parts. So many bags with so many parts. The website mentions all new tooling. I doubt that. That would cost a lot of money. The model that I assembled wasn't that bad. Very little flash and few depressions.
