tim boyd Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 (edited) I'm going to post some photos as I build the Revell '29A Roadster kit. This is not really a "On the Bench" build, rather a quick build to see how the kit comes together when assembled straight out of the box, without modifications. I've posted the first six photos here http://public.fotki.com/funman1712/tim-boyd-on-line-mo/tim-boyd-on-line-ho-6/ Included are photos of the painted engine block and front cover, all the engine components just before assembly, a gorgeous set of painted Buick-style finned brake drums. interior components, and a view of the two frames included in the kit. Check back often for updates! Thanks...TIM Edited September 8, 2015 by tim boyd
Jantrix Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Thanks Tim. Looking forward to seeing the build.
Spex84 Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Thanks for the updates, this is going to be very interesting! It takes hours to make a Revell '32 frame look like that.
Taxdude Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 But are the exhaust ports tapped for the correct bolts? Running for cover
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 But are the exhaust ports tapped for the correct bolts? Running for cover Oooooo...clever.
jbwelda Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 nice to see this being done before our very eyes! thanks Tim!the only thing I do not like so far is that you have to paint that half the outside half of the interior panel same as the rest of the body. that's not a problem with solid colors but more glamour finishes it might be a problem. can that portion be trimmed off and glued to the body before painting, or will cutting it apart disturb the interior engraving on the other side? you could tape it to the body for the paint stage I suppose. does the channeled version work the same way?jb
Dennis Lacy Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I'm willing to bet that a person could use the back side of a #11 blade and the wheel well as a guide to scribe the interior side panels free from the wheel wells. That would allow the wheel well to be glued to the body and the seam filled before paint.
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 You have my attention. Looking forward to more,
tim boyd Posted August 25, 2015 Author Posted August 25, 2015 Engine is finished....seven updated photos at the link....TIM http://public.fotki.com/funman1712/tim-boyd-on-line-mo/tim-boyd-on-line-ho-6/
RAT-T Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 LOOKS GREAT TIM, I LIKE THE LOOK OF THE CRISP DETAIL LINES ON THE COWL
tim boyd Posted August 25, 2015 Author Posted August 25, 2015 Chassis assembly is just about complete. Photos hopefully later this evening. TIM
jbwelda Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I hate to mention this and don't want it to blow up here...but the spacing on the exhaust headers does look awfully long in the center on the built motor, though they look pretty ok to me as to the spacing of the pairs of pipes. That makes me agree with someone somewhere that maybe the real cause of the situation is the length of the heads and probably the block that they mount to. looks great otherwise especially those six deuces on the log manifolds, and the pipes look kool too with those curved tips.jb
tim boyd Posted August 26, 2015 Author Posted August 26, 2015 Chassis is finished..... ..and includes probably the best dropped I-Beam front axle yet found in a 1/25th scale kit.... Please note that I have yet to do paint touchups. And yes, those holes through the shock mounts are just the way they come in the kit! Ten new pictures (as of Tuesday evening) at this link http://public.fotki.com/funman1712/tim-boyd-on-line-mo/tim-boyd-on-line-ho-6/ Start at picture #14 for latest updates.... TIM
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Great to see this going together with up-close shots. There's a lot to like about this kit. Obviously, the Buick finned drums and what appear to be Ford brake backing plates look very good. The dropped front axle is also a much needed, long overdue piece. It's made so that a correct-looking conversion to working steering won't be too hard.I already need at least one of these kits just as an under-car exhaust system donor. The nicely detailed and separate floor will certainly help in building a right-looking channeled car, and the front shock / headlight mounts, and the center crossmember / trans support look good. Thanks for taking the time and effort to show how this kit builds up.
Snake45 Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Great pics, Tim, and many thanks for posting them!Interesting use of MM Dark Turbine Bronze on the engine. I bought a can of this before it was discontinued and have been wondering what I can use it on. Would it work for Oldsmobile Engine "Gold" (which is dark gold with a little coppery tone, to my eye), or would it be too dark for that?
jbwelda Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 I like those shock towers. now this might be a bit stupid but I think maybe you have the top of the shocks in the upper lightning holes, Tim, and perhaps they are supposed to be up in the top of the tower. could that be possible? I like the angle they are at but I was wondering what is that upper part for if not the top shock mount? headlamp mount?looks great though!jb

jbwelda Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 thanks for clearing that up! indeed a very nice masking or hand paint job!jb

Would it work for Oldsmobile Engine "Gold" (which is dark gold with a little coppery tone, to my eye), or would it be too dark for that?I don't think that it'll work for Olds engine gold as my day owned a few Oldsmobile's., as it would be too dark like you said. I was lucky enough to snag three cans of the Turbine Bronze paint, and hopefully I'll use them soon.
Spex84 Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Just realized those exhausts would solve 3 or 4 builds I'm working on right now. This kit is a treasure trove so far!
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Nice work. This is a great kit. Looks like this goes togethef as nicely as the 32 kits do.
