brodie_83 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 My girlfriend and I are going to build a replica of her dad's 1970 Ford Torino GT but the Revell kit comes with a 429 Cobra engine...his car has a 351 Cleveland engine. Where can I find an accurate engine to replace the big block with?Thanks!-Brodie
brodie_83 Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 But is it a Cleveland or Windsor? They are different.
Daddyfink Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 The biggest visual difference is the top water hose. The Cleveland goes into the from timing cover and the Windsor goes into the from of the intake manifold. And the Windsor has six bolts holding the valve covers while a Cleveland has eight. In scale, you would not be able to really tell the differences
brodie_83 Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 So since I need the wheels from the AMT 1969 Mustang Mach 1 kit, the engine should work as well? If there are visual differences, I should be able to custom fab stuff to make it correct. Then I can slap the 429 Cobra engine in the '69 Mach 1 kit and build that one too
Jon Haigwood Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Stock valve covers has a raised area on one end
tim boyd Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 This kit has a nice 351 in it. The Revell '70 Mustang Mach 1 kit has the best Cleveland 351 in 1/25th scale. It is really the only mostly authentic Cleveland in this scale. It is entirely stock except for the valve covers, which are Ford Racing aftermarket parts that need to be replaced with parts that replicate the factory stock version. There is a photo of a built and paint detailed engine from this kit in the "Ford Muscle V8's" story I did for the other model car mag a few years back. Good luck with your project...that's a cool car, for sure. TIM
brodie_83 Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 That is a 1 /24 scale, not 1/25.
Jon Haigwood Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 on a engine block (318 is the only real engine I have available) is 22" long. in 1/25th that would be about (.88), .0366(about 1/32nd) longer than in 1/24th.(.916Not sure how accurate the kit builders get to actual scale but for me that would be a un-noticeable difference. Some builders do like to get it dead nuts on tho. Your results may very Just passing along the info
rsxse240 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 That's getting a bit picky! lol Most of the time, engines, seats and other various parts are not exact to scale, due to material thickness, production restrictions, or any number of reasons...designers were just lazy and didn't want to do another scale calculation, who knows. lol That engine may seem slightly larger than the stock one, but it's the best one on the market. AMT also did a 71 or 72 Mach-I with a 351, but I'm almost certain it's a Winsor and it would most certainly be simply a lump of plastic with some " 'at'll do" details and floating belt pulleys. Like Jon says, go with the Mustang's Cleveland, it'll be your best bet.
Jon Haigwood Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 I have a MPC Boss 351 and the details on the intake manifold and valve covers are so basic you couldn't tell what engine it had in it (supposed to be a Cleveland)
Muncie Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Check out the 351 in the 1980's NASCAR kits- AMT for 1/25, Monogram for 1/24 - good detail, might be a place to start. the old NASCAR kits are still out there and reasonably priced parts sources.
russosborne Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Here is a place that sells resin engines. You have to scroll down a bit to find the stock Cleveland.http://www.scalemodelingbychris.com/smbc_partsp1.htmHTH,Russ
Jantrix Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 The AMT '73 "Black Cat" Cougar has a very decent Cleveland. The kits are not rare or sought after, so they aren't very expensive.
Ben Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 I bought the 351 Cleveland kit from Scale Models by Chris.http://www.motorcityresincasters.com/motors.htm
vamach1 Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 How did I miss this thread? See the more current one as there is at least one new source and the SMBC engine is not longer available.

Sadly no 429 CJ's or 351 Clevelands. The Cougar Eliminator did have a nice little Boss 302 however. Do not believe what you read on the side of the box created by a markerting person that would not know the difference between a 429 Boss and a 426 Hemi. Here's some comments from that other site from 2007. Edited August 22, 2019 by vamach1
