Wow, Thank you. That was so awesome. I can watch that a 100 times. Thanks Greg for posting this one, I  can't tell you enough about how much I loved that.  Thanks.     Jeff

My family lived in Pasadena in those days, and we'd go for the day to Long Beach to go to the beach (it was inside the breakwater, so not much surf--perfect for us kids).  Afterwards, we'd stop by Beany's for lunch, and eat on the drive back up Rosemead Blvd.  I can still remember the taste of the french fries!  This was maybe a couple of years after the video, but it's the same place.  Wow--talk about a jolt to the way back!

Greg, another winner. Man, you find the coolest stuff.

Thanks Ray, for rubbing it in by telling us you went to In and Out Burger. You should think about us poor slobs who don't live in the southwest. ?

Living here in Minnesnowta makes drive ins a little impractical. There have been a few over the years. Porky's was a popular one for years here in the Twin Cities. But, they all gone now. We have a Sonics. A place I'm not all that impressed by. And we still have A&Ws. But, not with the old fashion drive in type of serve anymore.

Again, thanks Ray. As if this time of year isn't bleak enough around here.

cool video. what a wonderful era to grow up in. was Beany's named after the Beany and Cecil cartoon? (i used to watch that).

Greg K., I was wondering the same thing. The rotatong Beany on top of the sign looks just like Beany from the Beany and Cecil show. I too grew up watching the cartoon version. But, the original Beany and Cecil show in the 50's was puppet show. An interesting fact, the puppet show version was Elbert Einstein's favorite TV show. He tried to watch it every time it was on. He went so far to plan schedule a way to not miss the show. Weird, eh? The smartest man in the world, loved a kids puppet show.

Doing some research on line. There is a tie between Beany' Drive Through and the puppet show Time For Beany. The Beany and Cecil show was basically a cartoon version of Time For Beany. With most of the same characters. Lots good stuff on line about both shows. And clips of both shows on YouTube.

That was very awesome!  Thank you Greg for posting that link. Don't you wish you had any one of those classic cars? Some really nice rides in that video.

As for In and Out, I find it appropriately named. I have 2 within 5 miles of me and never, ever go there.

Yeah, if you consider McDonalds & Subway good stuff!

The Midwest has been a food "wasteland" for many years.

I think it may have a lot to do with the farm land basic "meat & potatoes" mentality.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, farmers are just down to earth people who are normally not real "down" with extravagant things.

Around here an Applebee's is a gastronomic adventure!! :D

Although in the larger cities, it is getting better.

There are some fairly good restaurants in the town that I live in.

Where are good restaurants in your town? I know your town, it's nowhere as big as the Twin Cities. And we don't have any really good or special restaurants up here! ?

Back to Ray. Sorry Ray, this area was settled by cheap Germans and Scandinavians. Basic meat and potatos kind of people. Unwilling to try interesting things. As Steve noted we only have the basic chains around here. Nothing interesting like In and Out, or another of my favorites, Steak and Shake. We're lucky that we have Poeyes, with their spicy chicken.

Oh! Hold on. We do have one good chain up here that started over in Wisconsin. Culvers. They've expanded a lot in the last 15 years or so. And they are very good. Again basic fair. Mainly burgers. They also have great chicken and fish. And they fairly famous for their frozen custard. So not all hope for good fast food has been lost up here. Culvers is the one bright spot up here.

Not really so much "chain" restaurants, but some other good restaurants.

There is a family in town by the name of "Zubay" that own about a dozen different restaurants ranging from 3 great burger joints called "Newts", to a bistro type place called "The Redwood room" & on the higher end, a steak house called "300 First" & our favorite, a seafood restaurant called "City Cafe".

They all have excellent food & the Zubay's all but own the stand alone restaurant business in Rochester.

The next time you're in Rochester, Check one of them out.

Especially if you're looking for a great burger. Newts is terrific!!

But plan on waiting to be seated at any of them on a Saturday night.

They're all crazy busy!

We have Culvers here as well. No White Castles. I used to live in Chicago years ago and liked going to White Castles early in the morning. To be honest when I moved from Illinois to California ( to Arizona years later ) I was disappointed in the food and though Chicago food was much better. Pizza, hot dogs, beef sandwiches and beef and sausage combo sandwiches. Now I'm hungry !

You better believe it, buddy!

In Chicago we have rampant political corruption, insanely high taxes, and the best food on the planet! B)

You haven't lived until you've had a Chicago-style hot dog and fresh-cut fries. Or a Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. Or a Chicago-style Italian Beef. Or a Chicago-style Polish. Man oh man, it's a wonder I don't weigh 300 pounds!
