Just before the molds left Iowa the 66 T-bird promo / craftsman tool was sampled in error (wrong label on tool). This was not part of the hanger shot program, it was someone looking to find a particular model for personal reasons.

I received a full set of nice looking parts (with engine block off plate) from a friend in Dyersville. The parts look good and  very little flash.

Would be interesting to know how many times something like this happened.

The above is the '66 T-bird I wish they would reissue. I like the Town Coupe roof much better than the Landau version included with the convertible kit. Blind rear quarters like the Landau, but no Landau "S" bars or vinyl roof. Obviously the molds still exist. I wonder what it would take to get Round 2 to reissue the kit?

Judging by past performance, an act of God (or Congress).

(I kid, I kid...)

So. Let's wildly speculate on other kits that fit Tim's description... MPC '66 Dodge or Toronado? +/ - one year and then customized.

Now THIS I find fascinating, and sets the mind racing as to what else might still exist.  Perfect example of something I wouldn't expect to still be around.

I have a very distressed promo of that, molded in black. I hope to restore it. I've got a reissued kit (which I plan to build as a custom) for all new stock chrome. It has some severe sink marks in the trunk over the screw pillars. I'm working on filling them. If I can get them flawless, I plan to paint the trunk black and then polish out the rest of the black plastic. If that doesn't look good, I'll probably paint the whole thing Emberglow.

Thanks, that rules out...dang, only one kit. -_- :D

Wow, thanks for sharing the info and pics, Craig.

When was the tooling removed from the IA storage location and moved...to either China or elsewhere in the U.S.? Some of the tooling seems to have never left the U.S. (MPC 1/20 Ford Van, AMT Customizing Boat, AMT Datsun 280Z Turbo, etc.,), while some was sent to China.

Did Ertl move the tooling sent to Mexico in the '90s back to the facility in Iowa?

I thought all the tooling went from Iowa to Mexico then to China. I can't remember when it left Iowa, I have had the T-bird 15+ years.

Great find on that T-bird! As I said, it's also the only way to get a correct '66 coupe (the full kit is a convertible with a tacked-on roof; interior's wrong for a coupe).

Did you get the glass for it as well?

I did not get glass with it. I have the convertible glass and it fits well (front and rear).

I'm going to guess an AMT kit. Not sure if Tim can narrow it down between AMT and MPC or not, so my guess is the Astro 1. Despite the body, ehem, changes...:

...I don't believe the balance of the kit's parts were ever used nor seen again. And that Syd Mead style box art...

The above is another one I'd like to buy and build. I like just about anything power by a Corvair motor.

Any possible chance the Mystery Kit could be the MPC '33 Chevy Panel?

I thought it was made into the vampire van.

Yeah, but that fits what Tim originally told us. B)

A few years ago, I restored a beat up Red '66 T-Bird Town Hardtop promo, using parts from a $5.00 Convertible kit, and it came out great, Strange thing, I have the original annual kits of the Town Landau, and the Convertible, as well as a couple of the later issues of the kit , and a rather ratty '65 Thunderbird Hardtop, which I plan to turn into a '66 Hardtop. There was a white one-to-one, that I really liked.

That would make perfect sense as I have a rebuilder I keep threatening to strip down and hotrod one of these days. ;)

What you need to do is very carefully restore it to factory stock. Five minutes after you finish it, Round 2 will announce the reissue.

From the info I found, that grille and radiator was used on the '32 cars and '33 light trucks. But I can't find any pics that match the delivery body of the kit.

'33 cars used a grille/radiator with a slight "V" to it and free standing headlights with no bar between them. Also note the "skirted" fenders similar to a '33/'34 Ford.

Was this the '68 El Camino/Soap Box Derby kit?

Casey and all...update....checked with my source at Round 2 and the particular project I was thinking of when I wrote my original comment, is still on the development list, but not at the front of the hot projects list.  With very little staff and many "to-do's" they need to prioritize the projects that can be expeditiously and profitably brought to the marketplace first.    Good news is that apparently it is still on the future possibilities list, not dropped entirely as I had feared.  TIM

That '33 coupe is a handsome machine that deserves to be in kit form.  but bringing back the '32s would be welcome.

The Astro I is just dead sexy, and I would buy one in a heartbeat.

It's too bad MPC never released a coupe of the '32/3 Chevy.

Was there ever an aftermarket/resin '32/'33 Chevy 5-window body offered?

Dunno, but I'm gonna try to make one by grafting on the top from a MPC Switchers '32 Ford 5-window. Won't be 100% accurate, I know, but it should get the point across and be good enough for a rod.
