Well my update for the ranger is a sad one after running out of steam on it and two failed paint jobs I decided to sell it to my brother as he wanted it more then I wanted to keep it so I brainstormed for a little while and found this one more to my interest

I will be switching the dash to right hand drive and I am not sure about the rest that will be changed but for now I am loving the amount of detail in this kit. I was able to put together the front axle halves

unfortunately while cleaning up the rear axle with a brand new blade I slipped and cut my finger so my time at the bench was done for the night. So hopefully I will update this more then I did on the ranger.

Well, checking in for this month. I haven't worked on the 3100 yet because I'm still finishing up other builds, but I will get to it soon.

I'm seeing great builds here. It's going to be a tough competition.

Update - Entry #18 K5 Blazer

Been busy with the ole rattle cans getting the frame, body, interior and roll cage primered and ready to add colour. Next step will be to paint the body and interior trim with Tamiya TS-34 Camel Yellow. Using the lacquers for their quick drying time as my spray work is being done outside in the condo parking lot! Apart from the chassis, which is already in its TS-38 Gun Metal paint (which I plan to tone down with a light application of dull cote) and the yellow bits, the rest of the painting will wait till I get back to the airbrush back on the Island. The top will be in tan, complementing the upholstery which will be done with brush and Vallejo acrylics, which I find results in a very leathery matte finish.

Plan on entering this project onto the Primer/WIP table at this Saturday's Desert Scale Classic, if you're in the area this is an event not to be missed!

It's great to see the activity level increasing and all the work being done!

Cheers Misha

.2) Must "appear" the be road legal to Australian standards. Now before we go any further I would just like to say this isn't as daunting as it sounds. Your build doesn't have to follow every single little law in the book, we "are" Cannonballers after all. Google will be your best friend for examples, but for those interested below is a link to Australia's gov site which should have a lot of helpful information. Year, Makes, and Models are unrestricted.

https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/legislation/

After seeing some work, here's something I think bears repeating. "The vehicle must appear street legal". In previous runs, that has meant that the car has headlights, taillights, windshield and license plates. The full "baja" treatment without standard equipment will get nailed by the cops before you get out of town. Just food for thought.

I tried looking up the link that was listed in that rule and couldn't really find anything spelling out what a car had to have and could not have in order to be legal on the road.  Do you have a link to where this is spelled out?  Thanks.

I think Rob's post covers it well enough, near as I have found standard equipment for Australian cars is very similar to US cars. Headlights, tail lights, turn signals, windshields, license plates, ect. I can't say I've found anything restricting paint schemes but keep in mind the flasher it is the more you stand out. I don't think we need to be too specific with rims and tires sizes other than you know, nothing way over sized like Monster truck tires or small rubber band tires. Those definitely wont work out for the off roading part.

Something I recommended in the opening post and something I will say again is that Google (any search engine really) will be your best friend for examples of what can be seen on the roads. There's even few road traveling videos, be them long and boring at times they also provide good examples of what's on the road.

The .gov link posted was the best thing I could find. I wasn't able to find a simple list of absolute specifics.

It's all in the timing passing one of these, make sure you have a clear line of site for oncoming traffic, nice straight bit of road and away you go.....Road Trains can get up to 60 mph and their length roughly 56 yards....... doesn't matter what sort of car your in, as long as you can comfortably get around it.

On a dirt road.......forget it.....even with one coming towards you....pull over and wait for the dust to settle!

I really think "stealth" is the best approach here. Even if your ride is technically mostly within the law's requirement, and YOU know that it is. - Would you want to risk having to wait for the policeman who pulled you over because he was in doubt, to decide that you are actually good to go? I'm trying to build my racer as unassuming as I can, while still being competitive.

G'Day Mates,

Certainly stealth is an important factor in Cannonball events, yet for the AussieBall one needs to consider what the "norm" is for Outback travel. By doing a Google image search under the title"Roo Bars" (it's not where kangaroos hang out at drinking establishments) it's quickly discovered that the absence of such a contraption on the front of a vehicle would make it stand out considerably. It is also worth reading the Wickopedia entry for the latest info on safety as the rigid bars have come under scrutiny not only for pedestrian safety but also structural concerns. Being mounted to the chassis they cancel out the usual "crush zone" designed into contemporary vehicles. New bars are built from polymers and are connected to the vehicles air bag system.

So it may depend on the vintage of your ride as to how you equip it. The images clearly show that Outback travel requires a Roo or Bull Bar and it is a part of being stealthy.

Hope this helps the discussion and builds.

Cheers Misha

HI guys, I'm changing my build for this year, still going to build a rally car. This is the Nitto 1/24 Lancia Stratos, it's the same kit as the italeri. The kit is a curbside and was supposed to be motorized the body is a 2 piece, just taped together for now. I will add an engine, running gear and suspension. I'm think of using a 1uz tbi Lexus engine from clearly scale
