niteowl7710 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Fund a tool for an existing company? Why wouldn't you just flat out BUY the company and be done with it? Moebius in particular is small enough that I doubt they'd make a terribly large dent in the first year's check - because YES you take the annuity payments, lump sums are for suckers who like to be broke again. But now with it being 1.3 BILLION, maybe you start looking at buying the entire entity that is Hobbico. Leave the majority of the key people in place, and enjoy making money from your investment. Just install yourself as the Chief Muckity-Muck of Automotive Kit Development, and fund some pet projects while reshoring all the manufacturing and getting them out of the morass of this intercontinental tooling inaccuracy debacle they have themselves mired in for the past 3-4 years.Round2 is lets face it a rich man's toy, and I have no interest in making a rich guy even richer by paying whatever he'd want to sell his toy.Starting you own model company is a great way to set large quantities of your lottery winnings on fire I suppose. You'd run into the same problems that Galaxie Limited and Accurate Miniatures ran into...no existing tooling catalog to fund new projects. Because I presume the idea of starting a company is for it to turn a profit, not just throw wheelbarrows full of cash into a bottomless pit. Plus lets face it almost nobody here knows how to actually make a model kit from the ground up, so you'd be hiring a whole bunch of people away from existing companies (and overpaying the people in the process more than likely) to come work for your new venture that hopefully maybe might kinda sorta make money eventually presuming you don't go over the top into model kits that you PERSONALLY want to see made, over those that would actually sell more than 10 copies.Yeah..buy Hobbico and Moebius, and merge Moebius into Revell under the name MoRebellius!
Tom Geiger Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Round2 is lets face it a rich man's toy, and I have no interest in making a rich guy even richer by paying whatever he'd want to sell his toy. Actually the perfect example of what to do if you won the billion dollars! It's been done before!
Snake45 Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 The reading comprehension problem is alive and well...So is the Powerball, so we can keep this discussion up until next Wednesday at least, anyway...
Petetrucker07 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Well Snake, keeping with the topic orginally started.I have a few things I'd like help fund or fund all together.1st would be getting Revell to release a few truck kits, the Bill Signs Pete and a longer run of the Will Do Wrecker with both sets of decals for the Can Do and Will Do.I would really like to see a Cadillac CTS-V coupes or wagon, both would be great. That's what I would do.
Snake45 Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 There ya go! I thought of a couple others I'd fund: '67-'68 Cougar, and '68-'70 Javelin. Would also see if the AMT '66 Skylark molds could be restored by throwing cubic money at them...
Harry P. Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Well, it turns out I was obviously sold some defective Powerball tickets yesterday...
JollySipper Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 NOW yer talkin.' Yea, we have plenty of Hemi cars, a Max Wedge car (model kits and maybe a few 1:1s) would do me just fine!! Would have to be a '63 though, my favorite year Plymouth and last year for the Max Wedge engine, I believe.........
Richard Bartrop Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Probably bankroll a decent Auburn Speedster kit, and a Cord L-29
Jon Cole Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Well, it turns out I was obviously sold some defective Powerball tickets yesterday... Yeah, multiple non winners doesn't bode well for keeping up any confidence that there will eventually be a winner any time soon. It's no secret that the odds for winning the top prize has been made more difficult this past October. Personally, I just want to see someone win. Sure, I would like that to be me, but I also know how these super gigantic draws tend to get people to spend more than they should, given the odds.As for what I would do if I won, is cars. REAL cars. And a tri level barn to hold them. Basement, ground floor, and upper floor. And of course, an indoor car elevator. And of course, land to expand.Buy a model company. As others have previously stated, not worth starting from scratch. Especially since I have zip background in business management. Would rather help out a company such as Moebius financially. The only vehicle I would lean on them for, would be a Corvair Rampside. To be followed by the Corvair Van. Otherwise, I would just let those in the know, keep the best days of model kit production coming, and well funded.
Snake45 Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Well, it turns out I was obviously sold some defective Powerball tickets yesterday... Me too. I tried to get my money back, and oddly enough, I actually did. Of course I plowed it right back into two more tickets for Wednesday.

gtx6970 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Well, it turns out I was obviously sold some defective Powerball tickets yesterday... You to ? I got nuttin , not even a single number Oh . I might try again this week ,,,,Might. as I rarely buy into these
Erik Smith Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I would do a 1/25 and 1/8 scale 1971 Chrysler New Yorker: Becaue nobody will ever make a 1/8 scale model of this car. Followed by a 1971 Polara with police parts...
DaveM Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 You know, 1.3 billion would fund a touch more than the kits I mentioned earlier in the thread. I would probably walk up to Moebius and tell them, "Here's a blank check, take your '61 Pontiacs, and make a nice accurate '61 Buick Le Sabre/ Invicta and an Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 and Starfire. And then I would give them the go ahead to do all of the Ford trucks from '58 to '79. I would also do a series of classic bikes in 1/25, including a nice pre unit Triumph Bonneville, A BSA Rocket, Norton Commando, a couple Panheads, Sportsters, one or two AMF era Shovels. Just for jollies, I would throw in an accurate CR125 Elsinore, a TT500, a Kawasaki Triple, early Honda 750, and a CBX! (Maybe they could be accessories in the pickup kits.) I would also toss a few nice snowmobiles into the pickup kits, like a vintage SkiDoo, a Rupp 440, an older Polaris, and an Arctic cat El Tigre, all with nice motors and details under the hood. An Early Honda three wheeler, and a couple of well done go karts would be fun too. It probably wouldn't even put a dent in that jackpot! Another fun thing would be to make new tools of some of the kits that are just flat worn out or old. A nice '36 Ford would be a good start. Some new tools of Mopar "E" and "B" bodies would be nice, giving us Challengers, Road Runners and Coronets. A '68 Coronet and even a '69 in 1/25 would be welcomed by a lot of modelers. New tools of the '67--77 or so Chevy and GMC pickups are in order, as are some new classic Fords. It's a shame that one of the most popular and desired classic trucks in the real world has to be represented by the AMT 1953 kit, and the Revell '56 Ford kit. The '53 is a decent kit, for its age, but the real truck is popular enough to warrant a nice new series. I could also make a case for tooling new '68-'69, and '70-'74 Chevelles, and then doing the matching GTOs and Buicks in 1/25. Even Vans deserve a little love. I think the early Econolines are overdue for a kit, as are the 1964-1969 Chevy vans. Even if I tooled all of this, I would still only have made a small dent in 1.3 billion. Lottery tickets are $2.00. Dreams are priceless. (I might even end up buying a ticket on a lark!)
ChrisBcritter Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I'd read through every review on the forum, and then pay to retool to correct every mistake/flaw/deficiency in every kit available. Just think: '58 Plymouth body? Fixed. '56 Ford pickup? Doors fit and work flawlessly. '36 Ford? Separate one-piece roadster and coupe bodies. '61 Pontiac? Windshield drops right in. '53-'54 Chevy? All stock parts included plus correct head and taillights. '34 Ford 2-door sedan? ...Um... start over. (I could go on like this all night! And into next week... )
niteowl7710 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) The reading comprehension problem is alive and well...So is the Powerball, so we can keep this discussion up until next Wednesday at least, anyway...I can read just fine, thank you. If anything you're the one having the issue by refusing to let this thread ebb and flo the way things do around here. That being said, since you insist on specifics. After I buy the Revells (US & EU) I'd get the bodies on the LX Mustang and '67 Camaro fixed. Beyond that a lot of "I'd make this or I'd make that" would depend on what exactly Revell had in development. I think a '70 Charger is a no brainer, but that seems to be more of a given than ever with the F&F Charger that was teased last year. Then go with more variants to replace long tired AMT kits...like '68 Camaro, '69 Firebird. Oh and an all new tool '69 Chevelle, because again enough of that old ancient kit. No, some people are just refusing to address the main question--the whole point of the thread--in any way whatsoever. Why would someone waste their own time, much less everyone else's, doing that? And thank YOU for some great on-topic answers. That's how you do it!
ZTony8 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) Since I'd be taking the lump sum because of my age( I don't expect to live to almost 92), after the tax hit I'd be left with about 570 million dollars.I would take a different route.I'd look into buying Modelhaus and other aftermarket companies and combine them into one full line accessory company operating from a large commercial facility with expanded product lines and consistent production, inventory, and delivery. Edited January 11, 2016 by ZTony8
Roadrunner Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I'll have to echo the thoughts of several others; I'd waste no time in hunting down the best restoration shops in the country, and get them busy on building me some really cool stuff. In the spirit of the question however, I'd see to it that the AMT '70 Challenger was reworked into a truly fantastic and accurate R/T convertible. I'd also foot the bill for new and well researched, accurate '66 Grand Prix, '74 Pinto sedan and '75 Buick Century, as these are all cars that I've owned and would love to do models of.
ProStreetOnTheStrip Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Got a Few1966 Dodge Dart1961 Lancer1952 buick special 4 doorand finally, a much wanted one! a hellcat!
Tom Geiger Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I heard the original question but can I do it backwards? I'd like to commission 1:1 builds of some of my models. Starting with this one.... Gotta admit, it would be a heck of a lot of fun to pull into a car show with this one!

Starting with this one.... Gotta admit, it would be a heck of a lot of fun to pull into a car show with this one! Well, it's kind of assumed you're going to drop a wad on real cars...and also pay off your mortgage and other debts, take care of family & friends, move to a better house/neighborhood/state/island, open a strip club and/or Hooters-like hobby shop, etc. This thread is about what each of us might do to "give back" to the hobby that has given us so much pleasure over the years.
ranma Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Snake, To answer your Question: I'd find any and all JoJan molds/dies and restart the JoHan brand up.
disabled modeler Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Snake, To answer your Question: I'd find any and all JoJan molds/dies and restart the JoHan brand up.I like your idea Rick....I have too many of those I need parts for or want to find again of the ones I had as a kid. I think even their snaps kits were great love to find some.Harry...your idea is very generous it would help everyone get something they have always wanted or help them pay a bill.
