Harry P. Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Best living director. No Hitchcock, Welles, Ford, etc. Your opinion as to who is the best living and working film director. My vote is a no-brainer. Clint Eastwood, hands down. Huge fan here. Maybe my avatar sort of gave that away... And yours...?
Petetrucker07 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Clint is great, I agree. Gran Torino and American Sniper. Just those 2 are very very good. But JJ Abrams is doing some really awesome things.Quinten Terantino is a great creative mind. Some off, sometimes hard to understand. But he's been doing some really creative things.Oh yeah, can't forget Christopher Nolan. I mean, come on, the Batman Trilogy. In my opinion, the best Batman movies ever.
Petetrucker07 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Justin Theraux is also doing some great comedy movies.
Petetrucker07 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Marty is another great one too.Martin Scorsese.
SfanGoch Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Marty is another great one too. I should include one of his associates and contemporary, Irwin Winkler.
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) Ever since Blade Runner, I've been a Ridley Scott fan. Other notable films include Gladiator, Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Down... Not necessarily my vote for the best, but certainly up there. Edited March 17, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
madhorseman Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I would agree with JJ Abrams, and Ridley Scott. But How about Michael Bay, or James Cameron?
High octane Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I'm a big fan of the American Graffiti movie, so George Lucas has my vote.
Harry Joy Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Francis Ford Coppola would top my currently alive list. Also, Luc Besson, Terry Gilliam, Josh Whedon, Jim Jarmusch, Craig Brewer - they pop to mind immediately too. There are plenty others. But Coppola would top it.
Harry P. Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 I'm a bit surprised that Ron Howard hasn't been mentioned yet...
Petetrucker07 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 His last couple movies were bad. But yes, Ron Howard has made some very good movies.I'm a bit surprised that Ron Howard hasn't been mentioned yet...
Lunajammer Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) Ever since Blade Runner, I've been a Ridley Scott fan. Other notable films include Gladiator, Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Down... Not necessarily my vote for the best, but certainly up there. X2. First name that came to mind, pretty much for the same reasons. I'd include Alien too in terms of films that changed a genre. Ron Howard is worthy enough, just didn't come to mind first. Kind of shame really, he's earned it. Edited March 17, 2016 by Lunajammer
RAT-T Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I HAVE THREE I WOULD PUT AT THE TOPCLINT EASTWOODROBERT REDFORDQUINTIN TERANTINO
crazyjim Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I never pay attention to who the director is/was.
Snake45 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) Eastwood is IMHO a good, competent, workmanlike director, but I find his style to be a bit...what...unimaginative? Everything's so straightforward, not much subtlety or nuance. I know he has a great reputation in Hollywood as getting things done on schedule and on or under budget, so he's got THAT going for him.I was a fan of Don Siegel and Sam Peckinpah, but of course they're both dead.I've enjoyed many of the films of Cameron, Lucas, Spielberg, and Tarantino, and then they go and shoot off their mouths about politics or something and I lose all respect for them.Ron Howard's done some good work, and I've been a Joss Whedon fan since Firefly. sjordan2 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Nobody's perfect. But I'd go with Scorsese, Scott, Nolan, Inarritu, Spielberg, Cameron, Danny Boyle and a buncha others. Best movie by one of those guys -- Spielberg's Schindler's List.
Danny Lectro Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I'm a fan of Christopher Nolan, as well. I found out about him in the early 2000s when a friend loaned me the DVD for Memento, I was very impressed. I thought he was a great choice for the Dark Knight Trilogy.I like most of what I've seen of JJ Abrams' work.
SfanGoch Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 How about that there John Waters? Not in the same class as others previously mentioned; yet, he is responsible for some cult classics. Ditto with Brian DePalma. Both have their places within the group of great directors.
Matt Bacon Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I'd go with Spielberg, Scorsese and Coppola, and probably Eastwood (though I suspect if I'd seen Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, I'd certainly include him...)bestest,M.
