Xingu Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Whoops I didn't see the '81 cut off. I was 13 and none of those models survive. I don't think any of mine got finished This is a great thread!
cobraman Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 This is the only model I have left from when I built models as a kid. I built this one soon after the kit was released in the 60's. I did update the wheels and tires a few years later. Note that the putty I used ( AMT putty ? ) has not cracked in all those years.
Snake45 Posted May 9, 2016 Author Posted May 9, 2016 Very VERY cool stuff, guys! Keep 'em coming! Here's a couple more of mine:
62rebel Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I love this.... I can't bring anything to the table since nearly all of my current collection is post-1987 builds.... I had a nice hoard of old stuff but they got destroyed in moving... saving even a few of them was a heart-rending task, as quite a few were literally unobtainium even then. ANYWAY; bring them on! MORE!
Tom Geiger Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Here's some in my Old Kustom Kollection... These are safely in my collection and in no risk of someone breaking them apart. Original 1962 Chevy custom. A buddy-0-mine got this at a shown and I talked him out of it. Original 1961 Chevy custom that I rescued from eBay. Note the tail lights glued to the exterior of the body... the kit instructions suggest that for a custom!
redneckrigger Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 These all date from the mid to late 70's. I used to be one who would try to replicate a 1:1 car. The brown GTO was my kid brothers, the '66 GTO a friend I worked with, the AMX my wife's cousin's, and the rest just builds of cars I had seen. They are still with me after three moves and all these years, and after a change of interest to heavy trucks.
Snake45 Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 RNR, those are VERY cool! Where did you get a '72 El Camino? Convert a '69 with a '72 front end? Very cool color on it, too.

Very cool color on it, too.Yup, spot on.....................a '72 clip on a '69 body. And absolutely NO idea what color that was! My brother and I built his '71 GTO. It had the 455 HO in it and the M22 trans. It was a fire breathing beast! We put 12.5:1 pistons and the lumpiest cam you could find in it. Danged thing lasted about a week, until he t-boned a '66 Rambler with it. The car still lives on though. A friend put a LeMans nose on it, and a 350 engine, and it hibernates in his barn. Put the 455 into a 2WD pulling truck, and it STILL runs! The '66 is still around too, but the owner painted it black. 389 Tri Power and even has the red plastic fender liners. Still beautiful though! redneckrigger Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Very VERY cool stuff, guys! Keep 'em coming! Here's a couple more of mine: Nice builds too...........LOVE the Verdoro Green Firebird! Used to have a soft spot for Pontiacs.............but THAT is another story for another day!
redneckrigger Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 AL of the builds in this forum bring back great memories. Keep 'em coming!!!!!
redneckrigger Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) Here's some in my Old Kustom Kollection... These are safely in my collection and in no risk of someone breaking them apart. Hey Tom, there's an idea for your next NNL.........a Barn Find class. Just for survivors! By the way, this past NNL East was the first show I'd been to since the '80's in Toledo. You and your people did a SUPERB job. Can't wait until next year! Edited May 10, 2016 by redneckrigger
Deathgoblin Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Unfortunately, all of my old models are gone. I don't have any of them from before.
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Well, I did a little digging & I'm not sure if these strictly meet the pre-1981 criteria, but they were all built sometime in the '80s. The model T & the '50 Ford were probably closest to the '81 time frame, but I think the '58 Chevy & the '69 Barracuda were probably a little later. Probably more like the mid-'80's. The '58 Chevy especially, as the trim was foiled instead of painted & the engine was pretty nicely detailed. I wish I would have kept these up a little better. Some of them were fairly nice when I finished them. Steve

philo426 Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) Nice!I really like the '49 ford and the 'Cuda! Edited May 10, 2016 by philo426
Lizard Racing Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 This post has inspired me to unpack four oldies. I used to be a big Penske fan. The Camaros ('68 & '69) are built from AMT annual kits from the day with hand-painted lettering from when my hand was more steady. The Javelin is a Ho-Han kit. The Ferrari P4 is half of an AMT double kit which included a Porsche 907. These cars have been in storage from the '70s when I was last seriously involved in the hobby. True survivors.
Snake45 Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 Couple more of mine. Built these two original annual AMT '69 Chevelles in 1969. Over the years, they had deteriorated to the sad state seen here: So I restored the poor sad things. Blew 'em apart, cleaned 'em up, repaired what was broken, touched up a little paint here and there. But all parts are original, and the paint jobs are original, just as I did them when I was 14 or 15. Just found the MPC '68 GTO I built back in the day, looking very much like the "before" pic above. I hope to get it back together in the near future, too. Stay tuned.
ChrisBcritter Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 IMC '48 Ford kustom I built in the late '70s, chopped and channeled:
Tom Geiger Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 A buddy of mine gave me this trio because he said he knew I'd treat them right, and that most people would just smash them for parts. I believe these were done in the 1960s to the first issues of these kits. They all had AutoWorld license plates on them. For some reason they were all built without glass. So far I restored the red '49 Ford, fishing glass into it, replacing a spot light and adding missing parts like the wheel center spiders.
Snake45 Posted May 11, 2016 Author Posted May 11, 2016 I've bought at least three from eBay (or the old Model Empire) fully intending to completely redo them to my liking, but after seeing them, I've decided to just restore them pretty much as-is, as a tribute to "the way things used to be"--and to their original builders, whoever they were. An MPC '68 GTO (not my own, another one), an AMT '66 Mustang fastback, and an MPC '66 Corvette. Hope to get pics of all three up in the near future, and a few more of my own as well.
Lordmodelbuilder Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Here's another. Built when it came out in the 70's.
redneckrigger Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Wow.................these ALL are great builds!
