HomerS Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 I recently adopted our fourth dog.....an Aussie/Husky mix.....from a rural shelter. On their Facebook page they said his fur needs some TLC and he was overweight. He and my trio passed the meet-n-greet test so I proceeded with the adoption. I picked him up on a Saturday and he went to the vet for the check up, manny/petty and grooming on Wednesday. As with all my dogs, the vet takes a weight when they come in every visit. Brian (Aussie's are very smart dogs so my boys named him after the dog on Family Guy) weighted in at 69.5 pounds. He had a mat under his chin that he couldn't even lay his head down. That afternoon when I picked him up, I was curious and walked him over to the scale. 68 pounds. The groomed took a pound and a half of fur off this poor guy! Who lets the dogs coat get this bad?? The vet said he only needs to lose about ten pounds as he is nowhere near as fat as everyone thought he was. He also had two microchips and neither was current. One of my others ones is a border collie mix who was chained up outside with three other dogs with no shelter and a frozen water bowl. I'm glad the shelter as able to talk the lady into surrendering them, but they should't have been in that situation in the first place.
MrBuick Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 I volunteer at a few different local animal shelters. Most of the animals that come in that I see were simply found wondering without identification or were simply not wanted, which is sad enough. But a few times a month I'll see a dog (usually) that has been grossly neglected or abused...it sickens me greatly. I'd like to get ahold of the people who did it to the animal and share with them the same amount of love and respect...it'd be nice if you could chain those people up in an abandoned lot without access to food or water for a few days.
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) Friend of mine rescued a cat that he found wandering around dazed and scared after someone had poured glue all over it.I've seen a lot worse.I swear, if I caught someone mistreating an animal like that, they'd never find the body. But the SOB would learn a little of what it feels like before he died. The really awful part is that people do it to children too. Edited May 10, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
Joe Handley Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 I'm not your typical pet person, but there are occasionally things that do make me just THAT mad, this was one of them.
HomerS Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 Although I had dogs as a kid, my first dog as an adult was greyhound.....a former racer. His bald butt from crate rub......teeth worn to the dentine from chewing on the crate......ear tattoos......he had eight comfy years in retirement but I got to see how these dogs are treated like property, not a living creature. I had to have him put down at only ten as he had severe arthritis and could no longer get up or move on his own.
Agent G Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 I will inflict great bodily harm upon a human before ever harming an animal. In fact, I have.................G

slusher Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 All of my cats and dogs have been strays. Animals dumped at the church and one I found at the dump ready to have puppies. I found homes for each puppy.. I have 2 cats now that was dumped in my subdivision and i will keep them...
GTJUNIOR Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Animal Cruelty really annoys the #*#@* out off me. I, myself have three dogs, all rescues and my previous dog was also a rescue that passed away a few months ago at age 14 from a heart attack. When ever I see a stray in our street (not often) I first try to find out if it is from our neighborhood via our neighborhood chat group and then take it to our local vet a couple of blocks away. He keeps it for a week or so and then sends it to our local animal shelter. I have even caught a pair of rabbits in our street once.
Rodent Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 This has been in the local news lately: http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article75892317.html By all reports, a really sweet young female shepherd that appears to have had a pot of boiling water poured on her I am sure that she will have many offers of adoptive homes once she heals a bit. Just like the Chihuahua that the CHP corralled on the Bay Bridge a few weeks ago.

disabled modeler Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 that is just bloody nasty! i have multiple third degree burns on me (working with 500 degree asphalt or a 600 000 btu torch, some burns are inevitable) and that poor puppy will looking at some SERIOUS pain as she heals, not to mention the itching....i really feel for heraccident? maybe, i dont think so myself. If the dog pulled the pot off the stove, you would think it's face would be burned, and that burn just seems to "neat" to me. if someone spilled it, that's a heck of a shot to not have any "splash " burns anywhere else. if this was deliberate, the offender should get the same treatment, see what real pain feels like... if I caught someone doing that....Id probably have to spend the rest of my life in prison.... I have a dog and 2 cats the cats were strays both were way young to be without their mother but she was nowhere to be found so no were there parents and there our kids or might as well be far as were concerned.

espo Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Dogs are pack animals and they really need to be with another dog and or people. They should be treated with the same love and caring that you would give a child. If you cannot or do not want to do that then at least find someone who will and give the dog a chance to give someone deserving the love and undying loyalty that they give.
Agent G Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 What I still cannot understand is the abandonment of a dog, or pet of any kind during a crisis. My current dog is a hurricane rescue. When you choose to evacuate, In my mind anyway, everyone goes. I wouldn't even think of leaving him or any other pet.G

I don't get it either, it would be one thing to have taken him to a pound or shelter, but to dump him off in some random neighborhood, I don't get it, and I'm not even an animal person.

I don't get it either, it would be one thing to have taken him to a pound or shelter, but to dump him off in some random neighborhood, I don't get it, and I'm not even an animal person. My cat friend who died last year was abandoned in my neighborhood. My gain (and I think the cat was pretty cool with it too). 14 years of companionship and unconditional happy-to-see-me, never a bitchy word, always up for a lap sit or a head scratch.A very intelligent and affectionate animal. I could never imagine what would have possessed someone to dump her like a burger wrapper.A lot of people are far less than animals.
Joe Handley Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 That's how this little Scotty is, although I have heard that he will freak out and start snarling and barking at you if you have on a baseball cap. Back when Mom was growing up, her parents had a dog that they got as a puppy from a local (to them) farmer and my Grandparents has this one friend who also farmed that the dog was cool with if he was in normal or "Sunday" clothes, but if he showed up at their house in overalls, this dog would freak out the same way. We're thinking both dogs (though decades apart) had to have been kicked around or abused by men in such attire and that's why they acted that way.
Mike_G Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 There was a story on the local news last night about some mid-20s creep in Eugene who beat the heck out of a little terrier puppy in public being sentenced to 30 days in the county jail (yay!)The puppy is recovering at a local vet's office and is doing okay, the vet has been deluged with calls offering to adopt the little guy.

Ace-Garageguy Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 sorry to hear about that Bill. Was that the white kitty on the red car you posted awhile back?Yeah, that was her. She got a fast growing tumor on her ear, none of the drug therapies worked and I couldn't pay the 6 grand for radiation, she was bleeding everywhere, was obviously very uncomfortable if not in constant pain...and the damm tumor finally closed her ear up and was going into her brain, so I had to put her down. I'm sure she would have done the same for me. Coolest cat I ever knew. Never complained or got snotty, up until the last moment. People should have so much class.
