I'll have to look at it again...thought I counted 5 lugs. IIRC, the MPC '75 Pinto coupe and '77 or '78 wagon I have in my stash had a set of unplated hubcaps also...could be mis-remembering though.

Wow! I knew Pony Express would be popular, but man, it blew up! It really is just like the real thing, only smaller!

Those wheels seem legit (didn't count the bolts though); they look like the Rallye package wheels, and those, according to the brochure I have, could also be had in white. Man, I wish someone would do Rallye graphics decals for this thing. Now THAT would be awesome! They even blacked out the roof rack it was so tough!

Does anyone know if you could get these stripey beasts in any colour? I've only seen yellow, silver, white and red. I think it would look amazing in Bittersweet or the weird "Bright Caramel". It would, of course, be boffo in metalic brown, er... "dark chamois" too. I guess I better get a couple of these, eh?

The tires are nice, and do really make the kit a cut above what we have come to expect from Round 2, or any other American maker.

Glad that you found out about the Bear Bait kit, Harry. When I found it at a toy show, I was shocked and awed, just like you! To make life easier, I linked both it and the Wild Breed Mustang reviews in the Pony Express one. I meant to last night, but I was tired and messed it up.

Lots of great Pinto stories. That starter solenoid thing is pure Ford. Both my Dad's '89 Escort and my mom's '85 Grand Marquis could be started doing the same thing. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of built Pintos in the coming months!

Adam I love your reviews that can be reached through the link you left above. I'm so impressed with this and your other reviews, I bookmarked your site for future reference. For stuff. Keep them coming. I too like loser cars. And have a couple the kits you reviewed. Like the Daewoo LeMans. So bad I had to buy it. I'm glad to see I'm not the only crazy one who likes these cars.

Oh, and I love the Citation X-11 kit too. Going with the 1980 look on that. The '82 and later ones looked too slick. Not loser enough.

Nice review! I still don't want to buy one, but the stock version in tempting, more so than the "Cruiser" version.

I looked up some of the other kits you mentioned, and Google lead me to your review of "Bear Bait". OH MY GOD!!!! I WANT THIS! I had no idea that the mid-70s Chevette had been kitted by a major company! I want someday to have scale models of the cars I've actually owned, and it's always burned me than NONE of them are available. BUT RIGHT THERE IT IS!!! The 1976 Chevette was my second car! And the first one I actually paid for out-of-pocket! (It cost me $600 in 1981.) It was dark metallic blue, was loud as heck, always smelled like oil, and rattled like stones in a tin can - but I loved it for the few months I owned it. Sadly, I was T-boned by a kid coming down a steep driveway who was slightly lit on holy wine.

Please tell me there is one out there for sale somewhere. A kit, not the real deal. That car, along with the '74 Corolla, the '76 Mustang II coupe, the '86 Hyundai Excel.... I guess I better stop listing my old cars. They were pretty pathetic.

Harry, all those cars you mentioned are available in 1/24 or 1/25 scale plastic kits.

Fascinating..didn't realize there was pizza delivery that long ago...

I think he was talking about the rust. LOL  They did have it here in 77 or 78 because that was the first port hole Pinto's here.

I have to buy one of these. Even though it is the wrong year. I have a 74 wagon project in my back yard. It keeps getting pushed back though. Plans for it are a 351C engine and a manual trans with overdrive and around 4.11 rear end gears. One of these days I will get back to it.

I also used to have a 79 Hatchback back in Ohio. Bought it somewhere around 2009 I think. Amazingly it had almost zero rust. Was my daily driver for almost a year before I turned it into a project car. Hit a deer with it and hardly did any damage, as compared to our 2010 Subaru that hit a deer and the bill was over 3 grand.

Great little cars if treated decently.

Going to hit a couple of hobby shops in the afternoon to see if I can find one.

I love that 77 woodie!

I'm hoping that the aftermarket will indeed jump all over this and get us the different front clips we need to make a veritable fleet of these things from all their years!

It's funny; at the time, Pintos sold well but were hated by so many. However, what you guys said is what I've found true too; some of the "losers" were actually decent, tough little cars. All it took was some care. LIke Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree!

Maybe, in Hindsight, things weren't so bad after all? Maybe it was all relative?

Hmmm.... Naw... :)

Oh, and Andy/1930fordpickup. I think those other guys were meant to be joking with those comments. As I was with my two above. ?

Fascinating..didn't realize there was pizza delivery that long ago...

I delivered pizza summer of 1977.   I remember having pizza delivered to my grandparents house in Jersey City, NJ every Thursday night back in the 1960s. In Hazlet, NJ   Tony's Pizza bought a fleet of red Vega panels for delivery.  They didn't last long at all!

And Matty's Auto Parts in Matawan NJ used Pinto wagons for delivery.  They bought them very used, quick orange paint job with Matty's Auto Parts and the phone number stenciled down the sides.  They'd even paint over woodies.

I'm pretty certain a couple of the earlier MPC Pinto kits had extension pieces for those exhaust pipes, to direct them to the sides of the car just ahead of the rear wheels.  Perhaps there is some part, or parts, in the wagon that used the space in the tool where those parts were in the earlier versions.

Since I'm going to go stock with it, I never noticed the pipe issue.

Easiest way to deal with it. Cut off the joiners, drill out the ends, paint 'em white, and instant dumps!

Much the same except for the front end design changes for '79.   I have the '78 wagon kit but not nearby for comparison.

The front fenders, hood, grille and bumper, and the dash and depending on the option that's duplicated the seats might be different.
