I have been working on a WRC Ford Focus for it seems like years now.  I have repainted it I don't know how many times now.  It is a very complex decal design and I finally got them all on to my satisfaction and let it sit for a couple of weeks to make sure the decals are dry.  I decided that I was going to clear coat it today and had just finished clearing another model and cleaned the air brush out by blowing some Lacquer thinner through it.  I went over to grab the body and mount it.  Came back and hit is with a full on coat of pure Lacquer thinner!!!  Not sure if I have ruined it yet again or not.  I will let it sit and see what it looks like.

If the lac thinner was clean and pure, and not dirty, and not blowing chunks of crud out of your airbrush, the damage MIGHT not be as bad as you think. It might be fixable with clear coat. Maybe.

Well nice to see (sorry its not nice, I know) that I'm not the only one having painting issues today. Just put a coat of Gravity Colors white primer over the Krylon primer I use as my working primer for body work etc. The grey has been on and dry for days. I even wet sanded it and let it dry for another day. Then I shot the GC white ontop as a base for some GC color and for some reason the GC white lifted the grey, right down to the bare plastic. Now I've used this combo a bunch of times, no issues, just one of those days I guess.....hope your disaster is fixable.
Good luck.

I once reached for the can of clear and shot flat black over my perfect color coat!  Hope this one works out!

We could probably start a whole thread just on this subject. My worst experience, car modeling wise, was years ago. Putting the final coat of urethane on a car that actually looked great, I got too close and blew the thing right off the covered table saw, and into a pile of sawdust!

Character building exercises for sure.  And I'm sure we invented some new words in the process!

Consider it initiation into the club!

No doubt. I've never met a serious modeler yet that didn't have some horror stories.

Last decal on a NASCAR model I was building for a contest......all perfect....almost done with hours to spare........

grabbed the decal set to use on that last decal and after a heavy wet coat of 'decal set' I saw it was Pro-Weld solvent......

just walked away....maybe next contest......

I am actually quite shocked.  While it was still wet, I decided I had nothing to loose and sprayed it with a heavy coat of HOK clear lacquer thinned to 50/50.  It turned out to be a horrible orange peel finish, but after it had a couple of hours to dry, I sanded it down and it looks like that saved it.  I have a ton of carful sanding to do, but I think I am ok!  Dodged a bullet on that one.

I feel your pain! I once painted a 57 Chevy Black Widow 6 times, always something ruined the paint job. Tried different paints, different techniques and  nothing seemed to come out right. I finally pained it with Tamiya spray cans and took it to our monthly club meeting and took home the monthly prize against about 20 other builds. I even threw the body across the room at one point, glad it found a soft landing spot :) Bottom line, hang in there, it can get better!

I look no further than what happened to my '59 Chevy right after I painted and polished everything up. Trying to get the doors on particularly the passenger side door, darn if the hinge broke because I was trying to "straighten" out something as for whatever reason the door was binding. Of course, there were no fixing the hinge, as it was very difficult to get the same radius as before, and have everything work. Well, I was too far along the WIP to abandon it, so I simply epoxied the door shut and went on to finish it.

If I've learned something out of that------make the hinges from now on to be more sturdy as opposed to prototypical to the appearance, and not try to force something on that won't cooperate in fitting right.

This isn't the first time I have done this but it has been a while.  The real problem is that I have repainted this one at least 5 times and gone through 6 sets of decals.  I have had to purchase 2 additional kits just for the decals and was lucky last time in that I found someone here on the board(thank Dublin Boy) who was willing to part with a set.  I have been very careful with this build, but I swear this one is cursed.  First problem was the panel lines didn't fill with Mica Blue so I had very pale blue lines.  Repainted preshading the panel lines.  Did that and then sanded through the clear and ruined a set of decals.  Next time something happened with the last coat of clear and another set of decals shot.  Decided that a black base coat worked best with Mica Blue to get the right panel lines.  Dropped the body on concrete floor and cracked the front fascia.  Another set of decals wasted and now this.  This kit is cursed I say, cursed.  I am going to have to bring in an exorcist.

Any pics Pete?

Not yet.  I will get some up once I get the thing resanded to smooth.  It does look good though, it just won't photograph well at the moment. Thanks for asking.

I have a LMM Panoz LMP 1 car that I have painted and stripped a total of 5 times now, currently back in raw resin. I got a couple sets of replacement decals from LMM years ago, but each time, something messed up the paint/clear and it got stripped. Just found out recently I cant get the Visteon decals from them anymore so now I have to either hope that Patto's decals will fit, or go with a different livery......not likely this one will get worked on for awhile. I think I've spent as much in paint on the thing as I did for the kit originally.

Hang in there mate, hopefully you can save yours.

LOL, My Uncle is a Priest, I'll ask him if he does exorcisms Pete!

If I have to do one more trip to the strip tank, I will take you up on it.  How much it is to ship a body to Ireland?? ;)

Ok, I had to repair one decal and sand it down and fix a couple of other issues.  The deal is drying and some brush paint touch up is curing.  It will sit overnight and then we can respray the clear coat and get it right this time.
