JerseeJerry55 Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Hey all It has arrived today. 1991 Davey Allison Havoline Thunderbird. I have been advised not to use the kit decals. Instead use the Powerslide set. Thoughts on where to get Powerslide decals as I have seen them but they're expensive. Thanks Jerry

bbowser Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Powerslide does indeed make great decals that are worth the $$, but if you're on a budget there should be nothing wrong with the kit decals. This is a fairly old issue of the kit so I would test a couple of the smaller inconspicuous decals first to see if they will stay together or fall apart? If all else fails, PM me I might have a set for this particular car.

MarkJ Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Are you going to prime or just shoot the enamel on the bare body like Hawk did?
JerseeJerry55 Posted August 17, 2016 Author Posted August 17, 2016 Are you going to prime or just shoot the enamel on the bare body like Hawk did?Rustoleum I'm using is paint & primer in one.
MarkJ Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Rustoleum I'm using is paint & primer in one.I'm using the same type of paint on my next build. Hope I can get the results Hawk got.

It hazed on me and looked suspect. So I decided to strip it and start over so I'm on my 2nd Easy Off coating ( the first time around didn't lift the paint/primer I put 2 coats) sprayed the Easy Off again this morning. I got some pitting it appears. Hoping I didnt EFF it up or I'll be sicker over it more than I am now. Gloss black is a pain in the caboose I really didn't need. I should've listened to the expert modelers. Edited August 17, 2016 by JerseeJerry55
randyc Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 If memory serves, if the decals are matte finish, they may break up on you. Glossy decals don't. If memory serves. Randy

I should've listened to the expert modelers. You shouldn't have worried about the hazing because part of using this paint is sanding it and polishing it and then clearing it and polishing the clear. At least that's what I thought I understood from Hawk in his method of using this paint. It's probably not going to go on super nice like Tamiya does. That's why you can get a big can for 4 bucks. I bought this paint for my next project so I'm going to use it and w.i.p .pic it with any problems I come up with. And of course I will be picking Hawk's brain on how to get it right because he certainly did.
JerseeJerry55 Posted August 17, 2016 Author Posted August 17, 2016 I have secured a backup body from eBay. The description says Davey Allison 1990 Thunderbird but I assume it the same as the one I got with the kit. The only difference is the picture of the one I just got has a notch in front of the right rear wheel well (exhaust cutout?). If anyone has built the 1990 kit am I correct about the purpose of the notch?Jerry
kurth Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 (edited) I remember when that kit came out, the decals were printed the wrong color, and monogram would send a replacement if you wrote to them. I built the kit back when Davey was driving that car. The replacement decals worked great. I seem to remember (it was a long time ago) that the first batch of decals was printed and the yellow was flourescent, instead of a golden yellow or vice versa... I do not remember. I might still have that original sheet in my decal stash somewhere.I have the Power slide decals as I would like to do this one again, and There was also a decal sheet made by Jax you might be able to find that looks good as well. I will say, Powerslide decals are worth every penny. About the other body, I remember other kits with the notch, and that was indeed for the exhaust pipe. good luck with your project. PatW Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 Do what I do, If you have a printer. Put the decals in the printer, put a decal sheet in the tray and print new ones straight on. Read the instructions that come with the decal paper. After printing, spray the decal sheet with one coat of gloss clear, wait 1/2 an hour to dry (test by touching around the edge of the sheet) and spray on a second coat and wait to dry.Next day you can use the decals but remember you have to cut close to them as the decals are not seperated like the kit sheets.I've done this many times with decals in old kits just as a safety measure.

I find that two coats may not be enough to seal the decals unless they're heavy coats and then you have a chance of melting and running the ink . That's why I do 4 very light coats instead. Nothing disappoints more then putting the decal in water and watching the ink wash away. And of course your printer has to have a scanner on top of it to work. Most printers nowadays are a scanner/ printer combination.
